When I had booked my appointment, it was only a week out and I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to get in. Not only did they make sure my appointment was scheduled properly, but they were able to do a consultation with me over Facebook. When I first got to the shop, I was very jittery and nervous because I didn't understand the process of getting a tattoo (this was the first one I had ever gotten.) But I was very happy to be greeted by my artist, Jon. He walked me through the whole process and altered the design after I told him i wasn't feeling it. I made it very clear that I was BEYOND scared because I had heard that tattoos hurt horribly, and he helped calm my nerves by telling me we could stop any time I was feeling sick or uncomfortable. My tattoo only took an hour and a half, but throughout that time, I felt very relaxed. Jon charged less than I had expected, which was a welcomed surprise. I'm so glad that I went to Great Whale for my first tattoo.

Have only had a brief experience at the shop, but the staff were all very friendly and kind. I had a gold nose hoop taken out, and the piercer was not even going to charge me for the service except that I bought a glass plug. Appreciated the service and kindness.

The guys who work here are professional, sincere, great conversationalists and incredibly talented artists. From day 1 I have felt welcomed as a trans guy (not always easy to come by in the tattoo industry) and been overjoyed by the tattoos I've gotten here - which are extremely reasonably priced. I would recommend this shop to anybody, especially those who are new to tattooing because these guys do it right! Tim and Jon are always very courteous and I would trust any project with them. I'm so happy that I stumbled across this shop here in Madison.

This is my first time visiting Wisconsin and I did a lot of research on where to get my belly button pierced. I saw a lot of great reviews here talking about their piercer Will. I came in and he was extremely helpful. He answered every question very thorough and gave a lot of information about care and was honest that my belly button was a weird shape and that the piercing may change. When most piercers may have just done it without letting me know. He was very caring and made it a great experience. If i lived here I would definitely go back to him for any future piercings.

I came in for an ear piercing on a random Thursday afternoon and really enjoyed my experience from start to finish. The shop is clean and beautiful, everyone I met was really friendly, and - most importantly - Will was wonderful to work with. I really appreciated that he answered all of my questions patiently, was meticulous about keeping everything neat and clean, and calmly talked me through what he was doing at each stage. At the end, he also gave me his card and encouraged me to text or call his cell phone if I had any questions down the road. Service was great, prices were very reasonable, and I was in and out in less than an hour. Highly recommend!

I've only been in for piercings, but Will is an amazing guy! I've taken 2 other people here because of my very positive experience with him. He doesn't keep a ton of stock for jewelry because it's a small place, but is very willing to order specific pieces for you. The place is really clean, he opens new sterile equipment right in front of you, and cleans his station before you leave. He also had a great demeanor- super chill, methodical in his work, and really calming to be around. He's the person I will continue going to for more pieces and I highly recommend him to anyone needing piercings or related things.

Tim is the best. I have two large pieces done by him, and each has been executed with incredible professionalism, talent, and skill. I had never had a tattoo before coming to TIm, and he was patient with me as I brainstormed out my idea, and in the end took it and ran with it to make something I never could have imagined but could not be more happy with. A year later, I flew back to Madison from Washington DC to have my second piece done. Tim is that good. Could not recommend the guy more!

I had a great experience getting several ear piercings at Great Whale. Will was clearly very knowledgeable and talked me out of getting more piercings than I could handle. He took his time cleaning and making sure everything was marked correctly. The shop was very clean and I felt very comfortable. Also, the price was extremely reasonable. 100% recommend, excellent experience from start to finish.

Last night I went in to Great Whale for the first time to have my conch piercings done by Will, and I wish I would have checked them out sooner! Will did a great job, took his time to make sure the placement was perfect and the procedure was smooth and as enjoyable as it could have been. The tattooers are friendly and very talented, as illustrated by the awesome artwork hanging on their walls. They all took time to chat with me and make me feel welcome, which you don't get at every shop. Highly recommend them!

We were in town and my daughter wanted a replacement nose ring. The shop is warm and inviting as well as the staff. It was a short walk from our hotel as well. We had a small wait but the woman working there was very friendly and showed us where to look for jewelry. Will helped us find the perfect fit when he finished up with his customers. I ended up buying some faux plugs. (I'm not quite ready to take the plunge) and my daughter found the perfect brass nose ring. I saw a few tattoo designs on the window that I like. I may have to make my way back to Madtown for a tattoo or a piercing.

I've been getting work done by Jon for the past 3-4 years and can honestly say he has always exceeded my expectations of the piece. Aside from being creative and skillful in various styles of tattooing Jon has always made me feel comfortable and welcomed while I'm in the chair. The environment at Great Whale helps with that as well. The place is clean and fairly spacious. All the other artists are super down to earth and are always stoked to check out what you're getting. I definitely can say I will always make the trip to Madison from Minneapolis to spend a few hours at the shop. Party on dudes and dudettes!

The store is very welcoming and warm. When I was getting pierced he put lavender oils on his hands first and then gloves. I asked why? He explained that it antibacterial and calming for me. I loved the smell while being worked on. That is the "extras" that will make me come back!!!!

He made me so comfortable that I was able to talk about other piercings I have been wanting to get for quite awhile now but haven't found a piercer I'm comfortable with on that level. Recently had my nose pierced by the remarkable Will. He was very professional and gentle throughout. Taking my soon to be 16 year-old son in a few weeks to have his septum pierced. I know he'll be in kind and caring hands.

My friend and I called in to see if they had any openings for walk-ins, they gladly accepted and were very fun and friendly! They were very fast and do great work! I am so happy with my tattoo.

Last night I went in to Great Whale for the first time to have my conch piercings done by Will, and I wish I would have checked them out sooner! Will did a great job, took his time to make sure the placement was perfect and the procedure was smooth and as enjoyable as it could have been. The tattooers are friendly and very talented, as illustrated by the awesome artwork hanging on their walls. They all took time to chat with me and make me feel welcome, which you don't get at every shop. Highly recommend them!

We were in town and my daughter wanted a replacement nose ring. The shop is warm and inviting as well as the staff. It was a short walk from our hotel as well. We had a small wait but the woman working there was very friendly and showed us where to look for jewelry. Will helped us find the perfect fit when he finished up with his customers. I ended up buying some faux plugs. (I'm not quite ready to take the plunge) and my daughter found the perfect brass nose ring. I saw a few tattoo designs on the window that I like. I may have to make my way back to Madtown for a tattoo or a piercing.

This is my 2nd piercing, and the quality here was top notch! It was clean, great music, great staff, they took the time to clean off the markings so my piercing was pretty from the first time I saw it. I also love that I had the option to go for a stud on my nostril instead of the cork screw monstrosity I got the first time I was pierced.

I've been getting work done by Jon for the past 3-4 years and can honestly say he has always exceeded my expectations of the piece. Aside from being creative and skillful in various styles of tattooing Jon has always made me feel comfortable and welcomed while I'm in the chair. The environment at Great Whale helps with that as well. The place is clean and fairly spacious. All the other artists are super down to earth and are always stoked to check out what you're getting. I definitely can say I will always make the trip to Madison from Minneapolis to spend a few hours at the shop. Party on dudes and dudettes!

Will was so genuine! Will was grilled by my friend and I who had a ton of questions about the daith piercing. He never rushed us and took his time explaining and answering all our questions. The store is very welcoming and warm. When I was getting pierced he put lavender oils on his hands first and then gloves. I asked why? He explained that it antibacterial and calming for me. I loved the smell while being worked on. That is the "extras" that will make me come back!!!!

I went to get my bridge pierced and Will was a total sweetheart, he made sure I was comfortable and relaxed. He also made sure the piercing would fit and was in the perfect placement. He made me so comfortable that I was able to talk about other piercings I have been wanting to get for quite awhile now but haven't found a piercer I'm comfortable with on that level. He makes amazing custom plugs that are very beautiful. The shop was very warm and inviting. I'm definitely going back.
