Recently moved to Bellingham and like a good mechanic a good haircut is really hard to find! After a couple of hours of research asking friends, family, searching on Google and yelp, I decided to try Chris At the Looking Glass. I could not be more pleased!I brought in a picture of a much younger man but close to the haircut I wanted. Chris took the time and really listened as I described what it was I wanted, and then came through like a champ! This is the first time I have ever written a review on a business. If I could give this place 0 stars I would! I called and asked if anyone at this salon knows how to work with ethnic hair for my 10 year old daughter. The lady that answered said she recommends two people, Chris and Jennifer. So we found a day and time that worked and set an appointment with Chris. She asked a couple questions about my daughters hair so she could take notes to give to the stylist. We show up to our appointment 15-20mins early. Chris wasn't ready for us yet, totally fine! She calls us back to start washing my daughters hair(mind you I have already brushed all the knots out and straightened it prior to this appointment to make it much easier on the stylist) Once she was done washing it, we head to the chair. She pulls out a comb and starts trying to rip through her hair starting at the root. Right then and there I knew she didn't know what she was doing and we should have left! She said she doesn't have the right product for her hair and she now has to run and get it. So we wait for 30mins.She returns with a deep conditioner and heat styling product. She deep conditions her hair and puts her under Heat for 15mins. She then heads over to another stylist and starts asking her questions about my daughters hair. Comes back and tells me she wanted to see if the other stylist had any advice that she didn't already know. Once done, she washes again and takes her back to the chair. She brushes through her hair(not in sections) and starts blow drying the underneath of her hair and trimming it(the hair is not even straight yet) she proceeds to do this throughout the hair. We are now 3 hours into this by the way! The phone rings and the stylist that answers tell the gentleman on the phone that Chris is still doing hair. She asked Chris how much longer. She replies with 30mins. Um my daughters hair isn't even dry yet! 5 mins after that phone call she says that this is to much for her to do! So now it's 7 at night, my daughters hair is wet, curly and in a bun! Chris was suppose to deep condition, blow dry, straighten and cut. We walk to the front and Chris says "I won't charge you for the services but it'll be $25.00 for the product". The product? What? She replies, "yeah, I spent $25.00 on the product for her hair, I can show you the receipt ". So I pull my card out and tell her I don't want to argue with her and I think it's crazy that my daughters hair looks worse than what it did when we walked in.  She then yells, "just take the product and leave". So we walked out! I went home that evening and spent only an hour and a half blow drying and straightening her hair. I am not a stylist and I do not have my daughters type of hair! I am a natural redhead with pretty dark copper hair and I have been transitioning to a strawberry blonde for a long time now. I went to this salon to get my roots done to match the rest of my hair and instead I walk out with all my hair completely bleached a white/yellow color. I didn't even see how bad it really was until I stepped outside. I don't know if the woman who did this still works here but beware you might have to wear a hat for a while after going to this place. Chris was super nice and I was able to get a same day appointment (visiting from out of town and decided to get a haircut last minute). Awesome that they accommodated me butttt....I asked for my hair to just be trimmed a little preserving most of the length because I'm getting married in May and I want to keep my hair as long as possible, she literally gave me a mullet. I said long layers would be ok but instead I have a shag haircut that will not go into a ponytail. I'm devastated. Giving 3 stars because the customer service was great and the salon is cute but I'm going to lose my mind if my hair doesn't grow back into something somewhat pretty in the next 3 months. Read Less

I have been going to the Looking Glass Salon for over a year. It is by far the best hair salon in Bellingham. My stylist is Lindy and she has been doing hair for many years. She ALWAYS cuts and colors my hair to perfection!!!!!! I love my hair every, single time. She does not disappoint. She takes her time and always asks what "I" want. Chris did a cut and color a while back and the cut was good, but the color - not so much. It wasn't even remotely what I asked for, and when I went back, she was kind enough to re-do it at no charge. Unfortunately, it wasn't much better the second time and I had to go somewhere else. When I asked her why she thought the color hadn't worked out, she said it was tough because of the previous color I had in my hair. My daughter suggested Chris when I couldn't get in to see my stylist in Burlington. I had let my hair get so long and it had no shape. Chris not only walked me through the colors (for highlighting) she thought would look best with my skin tone and hair color, she gave me an unbelievable cut! LOVE it! I love this place! They have so many cute Alice in Wonderland touches all over. A couple of things that I love about them. They let you book online, which is so much easier than playing phone tag. I came in with a bad haircut from elsewhere. I have curly hair that tends to look like a helmet without layers. But the woman who had cut my hair prior to Looking Glass Salon refused to give me layers so I decided to shop elsewhere and I'm glad I did. When I came in here, the stylist I had booked online looked at me and said, "You need layers," and I knew I had found my new haircut home. Angela is so great. Very patient with her clients and listens to what they want. Realistic in time frame. Honest, reliable, professional. I would recommend to anyone. I've been there on 4 separate occasions, the 1st time, I went in on short time and came out with an amazing new style. The 2nd time, I needed a color and it came out 100 times better than anticipated. The 3rd and 4th time, we worked on an intense color change (from natural black to silver) and even though I was in limbo, she made sure I left looking great and that my hair didn't get fried in the process. Lyndee is who I get my hair done by, and she's fantastic. They ask a lot of questions to help you figure out what you're looking for. A sign of a good haircut is how it grows out, and it won't be until months after my last cut that people will ask where I got it done, and I always recommend this place. Read Less

Jes T just GETS color and texture. My long hair needed help pretty bad -- I had an awesome purple ombre from my previous stylist that had faded out over many months into a brassy rose color. Jes lifted it right out and gave me the kickass wintry violet that I wanted, along with a nice trim. I only get my hair done once or twice a year, so it was a real treat. I'll be back here. I recently moved to Bellingham from Seattle, and was desperately looking for a new hair salon when I stumbled upon this gem right here on Yelp! I honestly chose this particular salon because I liked the name, and I am SO glad I did! This is hands down the best salon I have ever gone to. Let me tell you, my hair was a NIGHTMARE before I went and saw Lindy...I had extremely chemically fried hair from previously experimenting on my own hair, and then an awful attempt at a color correction from PURPLE hair that left me with stringy dark brown and SEAFOAM GREEN hair. I am not exaggerating. Although it may have been a "fashion forward" look, it was just too wild for me, and just not what I wanted. Anyway, my hair was (and technically still is) permanently green, literally. I walked into this salon expecting to hear that my hair was a lost cause, but that wasn't the case. Lindy made me feel comfortable and confident that I was putting my hair in her hands, and she explained in depth what my options were. This woman knows her stuff! She took my crazy awful hair and transformed it from trash to the cutest cut and color I have ever had. I went from nasty green to a fiery deep red in two sittings 6 weeks apart. I posted pictures of my hair before I came in, then one of the color it was in between to set up a base color, and then the cut and color that I got done yesterday. I am beyond satisfied with my experience at this salon, and I will keep going to see Lindy as long as I live in Washington, even if I move out of Bellingham. She's that good. Seriously. Read Less

As a curly-haired girl I have had my fair share of disappointing salon experiences, often leaving with a head that looks like a rats nest caused by overzealous combing and product application by the stylist. I understand curly hair isn't the simplest to deal with and don't hold a grudge against those who have tried and failed; however I do move on to the next place.That being said, I may have found a home at the Looking Glass Salon! My stylist was Jes T. and I immediately felt comfortable with her kind, easy-going and realistic attitude. She herself is naturally curly and she didn't give me a hard time about usually cutting my own hair. She even asked if I wanted a wet or dry cut! Hooray! A stylist who understands! She did use a comb while cutting, but I'm sure if I asked her not to, she would have obliged; I also trusted her judgement in choosing to do so, and the cut came out great! She gets even more bonus points for asking if I would be interested in styling products and which ones, instead of just adding them in. I really felt like Jes T. respected what I wanted and what I was comfortable with, as well as understanding more about how to shape and cut curls than anyone I've been to before.I would really recommend this salon to other curlies looking for a good cut from a girl who understands :) Read Less

I chose this place based on the reviews and made an appointment to get a perm. Jes did a fantastic job on my hair! After telling her about my overall objective and about what people have done in the past, she gave me some of her ideas, and she got to work. Usually a perm on my hair takes around three hours, but Jes did it in about two! She was quick, friendly and my hair looks awesome. I also liked the fact that she explained why she did certain things. I don't get my hair done very often, so it was nice to know the ins and outs. All in all, a great experience! Read Less

I have had many a fiasco with hair salons while growing up, and when I found a hair stylist that knew exactly what I wanted and delivered I stuck with her. But alas, I moved up to Bellingham for university, and rarely had a chance to get my hair done at home. I was really hesitant to let anyone else do anything to my hair - that is until I met Jes T. She is a mastermind with hair. I love the colors that she uses and how she gives you a little bit of an edge. The conversation is easygoing and sassy and absolutely wonderful. I fell back in love with my hair after she dyed it, and it felt healthy again. I can't wait to go back and put new color in! All the staff were great. Super supportive of each other and wonderful. This place is great! I have been tryibg to find a place to get my hair done since Christmas, and now, I've found a place! I called and got in within 20 minutes. Quicker than i imagined i would. My stylist was Lindy, and she was really helpful when i asked questions about coloring my hair at a later time. I also mentioned a want to see my hair wavy (it's pretty straight) and she showed me how to work a curling rod! I was really needing a trim and did a walk in appointment here with Lindy. She suggested I go considerably shorter and I was in that kind of mood so we went for it. I LOVE my funky cute haircut. She really listened to what I liked and didn't, she was friendly and easy to chat with, and it was very reasonably priced. This is the first time I have been moved to write a yelp review. I travel alot, and my hair is not my first priority most of the time. Chris can not only cut and style curly hair (I have 3b curls), but also give curly girls hip and edgy looks that are easy to manage. I also picked up some of the curl-defining muk. styling product and really enjoy the scent and soft (but strong!) hold. I had never been to Looking Glass before, but I followed Megan there and love it! It's such a relaxing, hip place to spend a few hours getting pampered. Megan is a great stylist. I saw her as a walk in and she bravely took my faded, bleached out shoulder length hair to a stylish, ombre A-line bob. It was a drastic change for me, and she put me at ease, offered advice and the result was beautiful! She does great work, but is also so fun to be around. I followed MEGAN to the looking glass salon because she is the best stylist I have ever had the pleasure of encountering! She has literally made my dreams come true every time I've sat in her chair! Not only does she produce beautiful results, she is an absolute pleasure to be around. Conversation is easy and fun with her, and next thing you know you look like a model! This salon was accomodating enough to take me for a walk-in during a trip to Bellingham.  I was in dire need of a trim.  The "stylist"  was incredibly unfriendly and awkward the whole time. Also, her hair looked like crap, which should have been my first cue to leave.  She criticized me for using drugstore hair products and said I should only be using salon products, then she was annoyed when I didn't want to purchase anything.  She didn't really listen to what I wanted either and instead just kind of ploughed ahead with her own vision, thankfully she didn't take off a lot so my hair looks fine still.  There was no ambient music playing and she didn't offer me a magazine.  I could tell the 3 stylists working were anxious to get me out of there so they could close early.  2 weeks later I can tell I'll have to go for another cut (in Richmond, BC), she wasn't careful with her scissors at all and my hair still has tons of split ends, even though I specifically requested "Please trim off all split ends."The best part was at the end when I paid.  The wash, cut, and blow dry came to $38 dollars.  Even though I wasn't too thrilled, I still wanted to leave a nice tip because the salon had gotten me in with no appointment.  I gave the woman $60 dollars and she asked me if I wanted change! I'm not giving ANYONE $22 for a $38 dollar haircut.  I said yes, I do want change and she angrily plunked down a 20 and 2 singles on the counter. I said "Can I get that broken up?" and she said to me snidely, "Sorry I already gave you your change."  I said "I'd like to tip you!" and when I got my change I gave her a ten and I said "Thanks very much, my hair looks great (lie)" she just said "Mmm hmm."   and I left.I'm giving 1 star because my hair isn't a total disaster, the price was reasonable and they took me in at the last minute.  The salon looked clean and well-maintained, with newish equipment. I'm taking off stars because the stylist did a shoddy, rushed job, didn't listen to me, wasn't friendly, criticized me, and also ripped out one of my earrings with her comb (no damage to my ears thank God) and then blamed me for it and didn't apologize. So I had not gotten a hair cut in over a year..mostly because I do not trust people with my hair! I couldn't go any longer, so I went into Looking Glass. I had my hair done by Jen, and it was amazing! My ends were so bad before, and now my hair feels awesome. I have some super fine hair but it is also thick, with strange wavy parts in the back. I haven't lived in Bellingham for almost a decade and was very happy to see that Looking Glass was still in business when I was visiting last weekend. And since I needed a haircut, I decided to stick my head in and see if Claudia was around (she still owns it). She wasn't there but Chris was, and she just happened to have an opening for me :) I explained what I did and did not want (no razor) and half an hour later I had a better haircut than I've ever gotten in the almost ten years I've lived in San Francisco. And for half the money! The salon has been tastefully remodeled since the chartreuse walls days at the beginning (which I liked BTW), they have good magazines to read, and the stylists are SUPER talented and nice. How I wish Looking Glass was in San Francisco...but now I have another excuse to fly to Seattle and drive the hour and a half to Bellingham! Hurray! Read Less
