After looking at many areas in Fairfax, I had officially boiled down to Way of Ink after a recommendation from someone who got it from here and it was affordable. As my first tattoo, I didn't know what to expect. Because I sized down my tattoo, I didn't get my original design, but my artist Edgar, created a new one I ended up loving even more. So me and my friend looked up tattoo shops around George Mason because we just had our admitted students day event. So after reading all these amazing reviews online we decided to give this place a shot. Everything seem good, very clean and stuff. He quickly drew the tattoo idea my friend wanted, and she asked how much it would cost, he said 140$, so she asked to make it a little smaller because she had only withdrew 120$, he said no problem and did it for her. I would just like to say this looks nothing like what she wanted, nor what he drew and she was too scared to say anything to him, so we just paid and left.Also I know different tattoo artist have different methods of keeping tattoos clean and sanitary, but a paper towel and some clear medical tape doesn't seem to be very sanitary to us. We both have had tattoos done, by some amazing artists, but we are both truly midfucked because of how ugly this looks. All tattoos done by Edgar.Came here for a few planned and unplanned tattoos... Light bulb tattoo was done in September (picture is from then) and is still looking great. Edgar was able to develop exactly what I wanted from a few pictures and put it together beautifully. I generally don't talk much when getting a tattoo and Edgar followed my lead with that which I appreciate. I also liked that music was playing so it wasn't just silent.Bold lettering is a tattoo that my husband got, also from Edgar in September, and something that turned out exactly how he wanted even though he wasn't exactly sure at first (don't have a straight on picture of his tattoo -- will update when I take one). Edgar worked with him to make something that he really want and will be adding to when he can. There is one part of the tattoo that he will have to touch up, but that is due to a wart and is no fault of Edgar. Old cartoon tattoos of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet are tattoos my bestie and I originally wanted to get them in August, for 5 years of friendship, and finally just did it. my brother got a tattoo for his birthday today and walked out with an unremovable mistake on his arm. the tattoo artist got the first set of roman numerals wrong, so we corrected him and when he came back, he had fixed the problem. until it was on his arm and we realized he fixed the mistake and then he had messed up A DIFFERENT set of roman numerals, even the tattoo artist didn't realize or pay attention to it. then he charged my brother $20 more than the price they agreed on. highly recommend you pick another place. I really like this shop! I am very careful about choosing which shops to go to. It's been years since my last tattoo (since I moved here from Louisiana) and I was really wanting a new tattoo and to find a new artist. I'm very anxious and read as many reviews as I could and sought out recommendations for shops all around here. Numerous times Way of Ink was mentioned so I decided on a whim one day to stop in and check them out. So glad I did! Duong is very kind and easy to talk to. He gave me his contact info and I sent references. Within a week he was telling me to stop by and check out the drawing he did for me. I loved it!From there we made an appointment and I came back. It's been only a few days but I'm so in love with my pumpkin tattoo! Duong is very easy going and gets right to work, he is quick! Do not confuse that with rushing, I never felt rushed. I was genuinely surprised it didn't take forever, and also thankful. He did an amazing job. I appreciate the fact he didn't stop repeatedly or need long drawn out breaks like other artists I've seen in the past. Price was super reasonable as well. I had the most wonderful experience at Way of Ink just this past Sunday. I knew I wanted to see Daniel because he had done 4 of my best friend's tattoos. We chatted about what I wanted, wear I wanted it, and although he was very open and gave me his full opinion, he didn't let my ideas go down the drain (after all he is the professional, he knows best!). So today I got my first tattoo at Way Of Ink. It was a new experience for me and I enjoyed it.  I Saw Daniel, the guy who did my tattoo, enjoying a cigarette outside and I went up to him and ask a few questions. He made it so clear and easy for me to understand because I've never gotten a tattoo before. Such an awesome place and great staff, especially the piercer, Daniel! I called earlier in the day to discuss my concern with one of my piercings and he talked me through what he believed the issue was, and once I got there he changed them out and explained the aftercare process. He listened to each of my concerns and explained in detail why my piercing was irritated and how to solve the problem. He also took his time in finding the right ring that suited my body/piercing well, until we found the best one. Also, every time he pulled out a new pair of rings he would change his gloves and re-sanitize the jewelry ensuring he remained sanitary throughout the entire process. Dont believe Duong is all he's cracked up to be. He kind of rushed me through the consultation. He drew a picture but was really unwilling to listen to ideas to expand on. I sucked up and went ahead anyways because of the reviews I saw. Afterwards, I was really not impressed with the tattoo. The line work was shaky, the saturation in the ink was bad. It wasn't filled in well because he hurried through the shading really fast. It seemed he just wanted to finish up quick. He didn't offer to touch up at another time, he said it will be fine. 2 weeks after it healed, it looks spotty. He charges about 150 an hour even though my total piece was about 6 hours total. I waited 3 months to see him and he only gave me an hour of tat session when we had a lot more to do. Then i had to wait another 3 months for his next opening. Popular artist, but mediocre tattoos.  I believe most of his reviews are from friends and editing yelp. Read Less

We went to this shop to request Duong for a memorial tattoo of our sons handprints that my husband and I lost in December. Not only were they insensitive to the nature of the tattoo, but it took them over 3 weeks to get back to us to set up an appointment and on the day we called to see when we could come in, he kept pushing the time further and further back. Needless to say, we still have not gotten our tattoo of handprints that we allowed them to copy, and we will be going elsewhere where they are more professional and compassionate. I was hesitant on getting piercings after a bad experience on a cartilage piercing at another establishment.  I came across Way of Ink on Yelp and was so glad I did!  Daniel, the piercer is by far the best at what he does (I walked in on someone getting a tattoo and was amazed by the level of detail).  I myself came here for a belly piercing and additional ear piercings--Daniel has followed up with me on all piercings to make sure I was alright as my body has been pretty sensitive to piercings in the past.  You also can't beat the atmosphere here--a great group of people work here too.  I recommend this hidden gem to all friends and family! My wife found Way of Ink via on-line reviews. After meeting Chino and seeing his work, she decided to trust him with her cover-up tattoo. It is incredible. So much so that she is now about 80% complete with an entire sleeve of his work and he's working on mine, as well. Chino is THE MAN and is an exceptional artist. I use the word "artist" on purpose because that's EXACTLY what he is. As for the shop as a whole, it's great! If I could give zero stars I would. I went there a couple of years ago to get an industrial bar and the person who did it made it where there wasn't enough space to change jewelry unless they were just straight bars. Never healed right either. Fast forward a few years I had let it close and wanted to get it redone. The piercer came out right away and said my ear wasn't the right shape for an industrial bar, although he said he would measure just to be sure. He then told me that he was uncomfortable doing it because it wouldn't heal right. As a professional your job is to help the customer make an informed decision. Piercer#2 said that the piercer from Way of Ink should have never have agreed to give me the industrial bar to begin with. Will never go back. Seems that they don't care if they screw up as long as they get your money. Read Less

My best friend and I got matching tattoos in 2015/2016 by Joe and mine already looks completed faded. We were walk-ins because when we went the night before, another artist told us to just come back the next day. My friend originally wanted the design on her foot which is why the lettering is much smaller. Joe said he wouldn't do it so we both got it on our backs. It seemed like he was rushing to get it done and I don't believe it was worth the $150 he priced it at. I will not be returning to Way of Ink and you can definitely find a better artist. Read Less

How I have gone this long without putting in a good word for my man, Duong, is beyond me. He is the real deal. I spent a year researching for artists who could render a dragon phoenix sleeve for me and had decided on a high school friend of mine with his own studio in Northern VA. But after a 9 month wait, he canceled and rescheduled me three times. I'm very understanding and patient but there's a limit. The third time I was contacted about moving my date, I moved on.I messaged Duong after doing more research and viewing his art on Yelp and Instagram. He called me in to his shop to talk through the concept. Immediately, I noticed that he was genuinely listening and understood what I was going for. In fact, he built on my idea and made some suggestions. He said he'd have a drawing in a week and to come back then. I really thought I was being taken for another ride until he called me up to tell me it was ready to look at. I came in, saw the sketch and booked my appointment - 6 months of additional waiting time!But man oh man, was it worth it. I sat for two 4-5 hour sessions, two weeks apart. He was efficient and only talked as much as you wanted to, which was appreciated because at about hour 3-4, I wasn't feeling like talking anymore. But he puts on Netflix and only takes breaks when you need one. During my first session, he only broke for lunch and it lasted all of 15 min. That other artist I referred to took a 15 min break every 20 min with my wife's tattoo! The shop itself has about three studios and a couple artists working alongside Duong. I overheard some consultations during my sessions and they are very upfront and honest about what they can and cannot do, what their prices are and what they're willing to bargain for. It's very fair and without the condescending attitude I am used to from other shops. This was certainly true for me. Duong honored the quote he gave me during our consultation. No per hour charge, no jacked up fees. Just exactly what he said it would cost.And proof is in the pudding. The tat is gorgeous and gets a lot of compliments. And I've run into people who have his art on their limbs who echo the same thoughts I have. And I don't hesitate to recommend him when friends look to get inked. Looking forward to a return visit. True customer service is lacking in this place but I read what they had to say about getting tattoos and I respect this shop because they don't have time to BS and they are serious about what they do and they care about what they do. So I went in because I got my helix pierced at a terrible shop in Fredericksburg and my piercing would not heal and I changed my jewelry twice. 3 different piercer didn't want to help me figure out why my piercing was healing. I explained what happened to the piercer and he switched to the right jewelry and gave me the right aftercare instructions. The guy was very professional. I was in and out in no time at all. My best advice is to know exactly what you want going in and be prepared to pay the price for your piercing. It is your body, make the investment and ask questions if you're confused about anything. I'd suggest calling beforehand, ask questions, so that you don't waste your time and there's as well. This is one of the cleanest and relaxing tattoo environments I've ever stepped in. A friend and I went in to get a super small tattoo. We were so excited about getting these tattoos. We knew exactly where we wanted it and how big we wanted them. We had Dan or Don whatever his name was do our tattoos. (Which we didn't end up getting) He wouldn't listen to what we wanted to put on our bodies, and when we said something about our placement or size we were quickly shut down. He tried to hurry us up with our decision making so he could leave. Finally we decided to leave because we just did not love the outcome of what the tattoos would look like or the attitude of the artist. I'd done some research, and heard good things, but when visiting a new shop, I feel like you're still taking a chance.  Upon arrival, Daniel was willing, and advised me to come back in 30 mins. I had asked around at a couple of tattoo shops near me seeing if anyone had any experience with the Japanese style. Got suggestions for Duong and so I gave him my half finished drawing and broad idea of what was in my head. You can tell he loves his work and takes each tattoo seriously and at good pace. A couple days later he has drawn up to completely different designs for me to choose from. They both only outlines so not everything was there but better than what I was attempting to draw. This was my first tattoo and I had no idea how it was gonna be in the end, especially since I got that milk chocolate skin tone that hides a majority of color. We split the 5hr tattoo into 4 sessions and I continued jump around the colors I wanted.After simple outlines got an amazing background, shading, and other details I decide on keeping most of every black and grey with red leaves. This end result of the was worth all the time and money, I was getting complements from every friend and stranger back when it was just an outline and even more now that it's finished. Hands down from the moment I walked in until I was done my experience was great! I already have 13 tattoos so it wasn't like they were getting a spring chicken coming in lol. I heard about Way Of Ink from a friend. I did some research online about them & I went in for an early Birthday Gift to myself. Dan ended up being my Tattoo Artist. He has been doing tattoos since the age of 15 & it shows in his art! I already knew what I wanted, location & sizes. I had a few styles of l...ettering & designs that I liked more than other's that I brought with me. The 1st was a Crown (going on the top of my pointer finger) & the 2nd the was the word LOVE (going on the inside of one of my fingers). Dan told me up front the picture's I had for examples were actually photo shopped. Therefore b/c of how small they were going to be that some of my idea's would have ended up looking A looking like blobs overtime & B we then discussed better options. Such as I moved the word LOVE to the outside of my hand verse the inside of my finger so it wouldn't rub together. Then decided on which of my Crown ideas would look best over time. Moral of my Tattoo story is that both of my tattoos ended up being just what I wanted! Lastly his price for the 2 dime sized tattoos was beyond fair all things considering. He's an awesome artist and took time to personally design each of the tattoo's I had in mind and went above and beyond to ensure I liked it before putting it down. Out of the 3 piercings I've gotten from Dan none of them have healed, I've had many piercings that have healed perfectly and for whatever reason he doesn't seem to do a great job for me. my friends piercing also never seemed to heal and was pierced crooked as well. I went here on a whim. My godsis and I said that we wanted to price two very small pieces out. We stopped first in Arlington and for two minor pieces (a lock and the word "resilience") they were trying to charge us each $120. We called Way of Ink and spoke to Joe who said they were insanely busy but after letting him know how simple the items we wanted were..  Could we be seen?  He said yes and we headed over. Joe was super chill and laid back and listened to what we wanted. I'm a severely indecisive person and he wanted to ensure I was 100% sure prior to continuing..  Long story short, we came out really happy and appreciated him giving us the time we needed although only two of them were at the shop!  Great place and love my new lock..  Will come back if we ever feel "on the whim" again!! Place is okay. I got my first tattoo here. The outline is solid, but the inside faded very quickly and in a spotchy manner. I only picked one of the japanese kanji on my arms- so that is my fault. But the rest peeled in almost the same manner without me even touching them. Healing was painful too. I've been going to another artist down in Woodbridge since and have never had these problems.... the guy I'm seeing is actually gonna touch up the one I got from Way of Ink. Regardless of what I said above though, I really did like the atmosphere. Duong- who did my tattoo was a very friendly man and charged me a very reasonable price. It just didn't work out for me. My skin is very sensitive and I think I just needed someone with a slightly lighter hand. I won't tell you not to get a tattoo from this place, because I do think Duong has a lot of talent, it's just that some tattoo artists mesh with some clients better than others. Read Less

A lot of my friends go to Duong and i do as well! i love his work. his prices are affordable, the quality of his work is amazing, i just finished my back piece (will post a photo) and it took about 5 hours which is not bad at all! my boyfriend basically got his whole sleeve done with duong and it looks amazing as well. his room is so fun filled with those little gadgets that move their heads side to side lol. he has a TV in the waiting and in his room so you or your guest can watch while you wait. the bathroom is pretty neat as well! they have really cool different toilet paper holders lol i know random but it's a great concept.
