I chose 1 star instead of zero, because Roger was at least polite to me after emailing back and forth (and then not answering me at all-twice). He refused to do a consult for an arm piece because he didn't want to even discuss going around my other tattoos. Basically, unless you give him free reign to do exactly what he wants- AND you don't bother him by having someone else's work on your body- you may be able to put down a deposit, and talk about your tattoo.  Not only did he say he wouldn't even do a cover up, he wouldn't even see me to discuss it. From start to finish it was the most professional experience one could have. Roger really made my idea for the tattoo come to life with just a minimal amount of time spent in the consultation. It was my first tattoo so I was nervous to say the least but he was great at preparing me and made it a breeze. Roger worked quickly and left it up to me to determine breaks. I got a tattoo by Kaitlyn back on valentine's day of my dogs Carter and Kuma. I am absolutely in love with it, she captured them so well. Roger is a complete and total asshole!  Went in to talk about getting a custom tattoo, while sitting in the lobby flipping through his books, accidentally knocked a candle warmer over and he came running out cussing at me and my father asking "wtf is wrong with you you fucking idiots".  Needless to say we got up to leave and he followed us out of the building still yelling and cussing us.  Definately no way to conduct a business and i would not recommend my worst enemy to go get a tattoo from this dick.  Just because he can do good work doesnt give him a free pass to treat his customers like shit. I can't believe that there have only been 3 reviews of Star City Tattoos. On the one hand, I'm happy since I can get an appointment pretty easily. On the other, it's upsetting as I feel that Roger LaDouceur should be a household name in the tattoo industry. So at the risk of having to wait longer for future appointments, I just have to say it -  Roanoke, you don't know how lucky you are to have an artist of his caliber in town! If he were in Pittsburgh, I'd have to wait up to a year or more to get a spot. But he's not...so I will gladly make the five hour drive down to get work done by a true professional. Read Less

Roger LaDouceur is the man. The day I went in to schedule for a consultation, he gave me one right then and there. Was very sensitive to my ideas and gave me some great feedback on what I wanted. He kept me up to date on the progress of the tattoo he was drawing out for me and it came out exactly how I envisioned it. The studio has a great feel to it, the artwork is proudly displayed throughout the studio, I mean the walls are covered, it is also very clean. I went to Star City for the first time a few months ago for a tattoo and MAN was it GREAT! I was so nervous but they all made me feel right at home. I have NEVER seen a shop so clean or a staff so pleasant and professional. Roger and Chad are a riot! I had an appointment with Jackie to get my tattoo done. We worked together on the design and she had some awesome ideas. I loved how she took my ideas and just ran with it. She even was able to work with what I wanted to spend. When I showed up she had my artwork ready to go. The tattoo hurt really bad and i was kinda whiny but she talked me through it and even set out her candy jar for me to much on to take my mind off of it. At this time in my life i am a 41 yr old female i have been getting ink since i was 15yr old. I have been to a few shops an artist an now I WILL NOT go anywhere else to get my ink i have recommended Jackie to hundreds of people , i drive 3 hours just to get there. i have takin my daughter there to get her first not to mention my whole family , my 58 yr old mother thinks its the best place ever an wont even think of going somewhere else , my husband , 2 sons.2 daughters 2 aunts are all clients an all love the place.We all agree that the shop is super clean(i own a cleaning business so i know clean) and the enviroment an staff are all wonderful . Ive been around the block when it comes to getting tattooed. Ive been tattooed by a lot of people at many shops...sometimes good sometimes bad...but Star City is by far the best Ive seen. I had a few duds when I went in but both Roger and Jackie were able to do some AMAZING cover ups and fix ups as well as some GREAT new stuff. When I called Star City, I was NOT informed by Chad that an ID was required to be tattooed. I put a $50.00 deposit on a credit card in order to set an appt. with Jackie. It is my understanding deposits are to protect from NO SHOWS. We indeed arrived for our appts. Drove 2 hrs and arrived at the appt on time. Upon arrival, I was THEN informed an ID was needed for ALL tattoos - 18 year old daughter did not bring her driver's license. They refused to do the tattoo - even though she was with me (her mother) and I had my own ID (AND she was 18. Trust me. Turned 18 on Dec. 8, 2011) ... DID A LIL RESEARCH WHEN I GOT HOME -- State Of Virginia ? 18.2-371.3. Tattooing minors. No person shall tattoo a person less than eighteen years of age, knowing or having reason to believe such person is less than eighteen years of age except (i) in the presence of the person's parent or guardian, or (ii) when done by or under the supervision of a medical doctor, registered nurse or other medical services personnel licensed pursuant to Title 54.1 in the performance of their duties. The staff treated us with distrust and borderline anger. To add insult to injury -- after refusing us service, they stole the $50 deposit for our appoinment! Of course, I will be disputing that charge with my credit card company. RUN AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. The staff is unethical, rude, angry and there is a definite negative aura about the place. Headed on over to another tattoo shop just down the road a bit. Both girls got their LOVELY first tattoos - the location was clean and professional, the staff respectful AND friendly ... AND THEY ACTUALLY KNOW VIRGINIA LAW! Plus, the girls were SO relieved their first tattoo experience was NOT with Star City - having that negative experience attached to their first tattoo memory would have definitely been scarring! So, when I got my lip done at Star city, I was nervous as of being new to the whole peircing ish and wasn't too sure about the place. I went place to place gettin turned down because of my age. I was just about to turn 16 and couldn't find any place that would do it! The staff was awesome and friendly. A Friday night I believe, it was so fast that we got in! They were so nice to us and it was so quick! The service we got was amazing and I'm not too sure what his name was but he was so kind and he knew what he was doing... I went to Star City last night to get what would have been my 25th tattoo. I've been to every other tattoo parlor in the Roanoke valley and have never had an experience like this one. The new tattoo apprentice Jacki was the one who offered her help first. I explained the tattoo that I wanted and she refused to do it!! It is a very sentimental tattoo to me and I was extremely displeased with the way she acted toward me. I will never go there again. I would think that any respectable tattoo artist would realize that your doing the artwork on the OTHER PERSONS BODY!! I do not mind that she turned down the work. Hey it's her losing the business not me. But to tell someone that the tattoo that they wanted was""Stupid"" and""It wouldn't turn out right"" that is just an insult and very hurtful. As I said I have had 24 different tattoos and all of them are extremely tasteful and I have never had anyone tell me what to put on my body. Star City really should rethink who they are apprenticing.
