This shop is so chill! My artist Chris is an amazing human! I have had the pleasure of going through a collaborative experience with Chris Jenkins since October of this year. I had a WTF tattoo that needed covering. I connected with Chris and together we have crushed our rabbit project!  It has been an amazing painful most worth it experience (why Chris do you finish with the back of my leg WHYYYYYYYYYY LOL) Yesterday I "finished" my leg sleeve and got a bottle of Richmond blood orange moonshine and an $80 gift certificate! Uhhhh when does that happen EVER! Thank you first to Chris who is such an amazing, talented, sweet, special soul! I love my big girl tattoo! Sabrina Elliotte was my artist and I can't say enough good things about her and her work. Five stars, 10 out of 10, she's amazing and will bend over backwards to accommodate her clients. She and her husband Gwooki are incredibly friendly and easy to talk to, and make you feel comfortable in their joint studio space. I wanted an intricate black and grey floral piece, but other than the placement I told her she could draw whatever she thought would look best. What she came up with was not what I expected, but it was gorgeous and I knew I was going to love it. She fit it perfectly to my body and the amount of care and details she put into it are insane. She made sure I was comfortable throughout the process, even using numbing spray (that exists?!) a few times to dull the pain once it got extremely tender. I love the final result, and will wear it with pride forever. I absolutely recommend her to anyone looking for delicate black and grey designs, and hope to be able to come back to her again in the future.The admin staff, however, really needs to do better to support the artists, and only gets a 2.5/3 out of 5. There were so many mistakes made with scheduling and communication that if I hadn't had my heart set on going to Sabrina I would've asked for my deposit back and gone elsewhere. From not passing along all reference materials, scheduling the wrong amount of time, to double booking appointments and needing to cancel, it was a bit of a mess. It put an unfair amount of stress on Sabrina and creates hassle for clients like me who have to request time off work for the appointment. Read Less

I've raved to everyone about how amazing my experience was at this shop.  It's a clean, organized, and  welcoming space with great people and good vibes.  Chris Jenkins did two tattoos for my boyfriend and one for me.  While mine was a simple design, I can't applaud his technique enough.  It was done over my ribs where I was told it would be painful.  He made time fly through his stories, sharing of music, and just cracking jokes.  I barely felt anything during the process.   I felt comfortable as soon as I walked in and appreciated the time he took to ensure I was happy with the design, location, and vision.  Chris is extremely talented and will be referred to anyone I know seeking a tattoo. I scheduled an appointment online and I got a prompt and professional email reply. I was assigned an artist Juan and we emailed back and forth about the work I was going to have done. I came in and was seen quickly and Juan was very personable and knowledgeable and professional. He made a change to my design for the best result. I was looking to do a portrait tattoo and came across their Instagram page. I filled out the consult form online on their website and Gray, the manager, responded hours later. He recommended an artist, Juan, who met with me and we discussed what I wanted. My tattoo was done yesterday afternoon and I couldn't be more satisfied. I can't say enough about my experience at this establishment. Firstly, it is professionally run as a real business not your stereotypical tattoo shop. Chris Jenkins worked on both my son and me all day long. He didn't stop to eat or stretch and delivered meticulous detailed replicas of the art work we brought with us. The room we were in resembled a dental office in its order and cleanliness. The entire staff was exceptionally friendly and very fun to talk to. This whole shop is amazing. If you're looking for a place to connect with an artist who will be committed to you and your tattoo, this is it. Chris Jenkins and I have been working together (mostly him though, let's be honest! ha-ha) through a design since the beginning of November 2017. I've had a monthly appointment with Chris for the past 6 months, and he just finished a huge piece of art for me on my left arm and shoulder.In the 30+ hours I've spent with Chris, as well as other artists and guests in the shop, I feel as though I'm walking away with an experience. As the saying goes, "dont spend your money on possessions in life, spend it on experiences." Buckle in and hold on cowboys and cowgirls, I had an amazing journey from creation to actualization of my largest tattoo. I completely agree with other reviews that it's a clean and professional environment, and would add that the culture of continual learning is apparent between the artists in the shop. From hearing their exuberance about industry conventions and seminars they've attended (or seminars which they themselves delivered!), to excitement about new tools they were trying or learned about... phew! I learned a few things myself! As someone paying for their services, I was able to breathe easier knowing that they're up to date on their product lines, tools, methods of application, etc.I've already got my next tattoo lined up for June of this year. Chris is going to cover up an old tattoo for me, I can't wait! I had been wanting a simple black line tattoo with some stippling for a long time. I scheduled an appointment with Jen Bean and she absolutely did NOT disappoint. I had one of the best tattoo experiences at Loose Screw during the Scarytown event and was amazed by their top notch customer service and high quality tattoos. Jesse Smith is extremely talented, a great conversationalist, and really cares about his work and clients. His tattooing skills are beyond stellar and he is very meticulous while working in a timely manner.  My boyfriend and I got matching bat tattoos by him, and we are immensely happy with our tattoos, and we even noticed that he added little details to the design to match both of our personality/character. Minus 1 star for terrible first experience, but then Chris Jenkins saved the day. He has so much patience and genuinely cares enough to make the whole experience comfortable. 10/10 customer service skills. Super talented and passionate about his work, but probably the least pretentious person and will work with you to create the perfect piece that you want to show off. Very detail oriented so you can trust that your tat will turn out great. Mine did and I'm so happy with the result :) As a whole, the shop is so clean! They took all of the proper safety precautions. I recently had a tattoo done by Chris Jenkins. Since I'm not local, we worked through email setting everything up and reviewing the design. Chris was very prompt with replies. The tattoo itself went great. Chris made sure I was happy with the placement before we started. He also asked for my thoughts on some of the pallet choices. My only downside was the the chair/table thing I had to lay on was a bit uncomfortable after a while. This was mainly due to how I had to lay for this tattoo and how long I was there. Normally this probably would've been a two-session tattoo but I asked Chris if he could finish in one sitting because of my drive. I'm actually going back to see Chris in a couple weeks to get another piece done. Read Less

My experience at Loose Screw was pretty amazing from the start. Sam, the shop manager, was always friendly and assisted me right away. Nick Mitchell does an amazing job - I gave him a reference picture of what I was looking for, and he put his own interpretation on it and turned it into a piece of art that I'm proud to show off. He was funny & friendly, but he was very professional and made sure that I was feeling okay and comfortable during the tattoo process. Everyone else in the shop was friendly, as well. Contacted the shop ahead of time regarding my design. They recommended an artist. I coordinated a consultation on my day off from work. Drove 1 hour. I showed up and they told me it would be a 1 or 2 hour wait. I gave them my cell number and asked them to text me when the artist was done. Showed up after no text and they tried to pawn off another artist on me. Might as well be a tattoo shop near a strip club in Fayetteville, NC. Complete waste of my time... Read Less

I'm not from the Richmond area, but I was visiting a friend over the summer and we decided to drop into Loose Screw. I'd been wanting a specific black and grey tattoo for a while, but I still wasn't quite sure about the placement or size. Everyone was very kind, professional and made me and my friend feel welcome. Mother/Daughter matching tattoo day. My daughter has a few, but this was my first one. We both got matching manatee tattoos. Manatees have a special significance to both of us. Barham, did a great job and although I did experience some pain, it wasn't horrible. He took time to create a realistic drawing ,explain the process and after care. Much love to the team at loose screw. Very clean,  and staff is super friendly. Barham is the best. I wanted a phoenix and emailed him some images. He came up with a gorgeous version incorporating elements from each. On the day of,  there were some tweaks i wanted,  and Barham was super patient until it was perfect. Apart from being a brilliant artist,  he's also a class act. He sensed when I reached my pain threshold,  and stopped working until i was ready again.  In fact when i got a bit woozy he stepped out and bought me an energy bar. I got my first tattoo done here by Barham back in October and just had some finishing touches done today. There was about a 3 month wait to get my tattoo initially but Christina one of the shop managers was super helpful and accommodating. Since it was my first tattoo I was really nervous about everything but both Christina and Barham were really nice, welcoming, knowledgable and helpful. The shop was also crazy clean and inviting. Barham thoroughly explained everything in the tattooing process and how to keep it clean. My tattoo turned out great and I get tons of complements! Definitely worth the wait and I highly recommend! Shop is clean and conveniently located, staff is friendly, artists are talented.  What else do you want?  Clutch was my artist.  He did a great job rendering an American Traditional style to the WWI Army patch I had brought in.  He drew it up on a tablet so I could get an idea of his color suggestions, and took great care in placing the stencil then slightly moving it based on my preference.  Clutch was not too proud to ask his colleague's additional advice on placement, etc.  One of the lines on my tat was not quite as exact as I would have preferred, but that is the worst I can say about a very good experience. My husband got a tattoo there a few days ago, by the amazing Will Gonzales. It is even better than we could have imagined. He gets tons of compliments on it. This place is a hidden gem.  My daughter and I stopped in while we were in Carytown to check it out.  Very impressed with the shop.  It is very clean and no clutter.  The have had OSHA training, CPR, and AED training.  That's impressive for an RN to see.  Office staff immediately greeted us and was very friendly.  She looked at what we were thinking of  and asked one of the tattoo artists to come out and speak with us.  He was very personable and professional.  He looked at our designs and gave us an idea of price.  My daughter was told she could make an appointment with one of the artists, but she is a little impatient and wanted it done asap.  So we asked about walk ins.  Otherwise, most of the are booking 1-4 months out.  What do you expect for good work??  They take walk ins on the weekends but make sure you get there at least 30 minutes before they open.  We got there on Saturday and my daughter got her time for that day, with mine to follow.  We came back around 4:30pm and Barham took her design and created an amazing lotus flower that looks 3D. He let me come back and watch the entire process.  His work is AMAZING!  He actually carried on a conversation  with us throughout the process...the last place we went didn't do that.  He has also put the finishing touches on an older tattoo of mine and gave me a new piece as well.  Love the work.   Would recommend this place to anyone looking for quality work, reasonable price, clean and professional looking shop. super nice people. I went to Loose Screw two weeks ago and got my very first tattoo from Will Gonzalez. The service was incredible. I was somewhat scared to get my first tattoo and the staff and artist alleviated all my concerns. Will worked slowly and explained every part of the process to make me feel secure. The final result of my tattoo was outstanding. It is very clear and neat. I was given instructions on how to take care of the tattoo and I did not experience any problems of infection or bleeding. I receive and continue to recieve multiple complements not only on the tattoo itself but also on the quality of the tattoo and how good the artist was. Hands down, the best tattoo I've ever gotten!  I get so many compliments on my ink on the daily. Daniel Farren is the man.( I'll post pics of my sleeve when it's complete.)I am very impressed, not only by his keen artistry skills but also his level of professionalism and ownership of his work. These guys use photoshop to help get the best fit, color, and shape to contour the specific area of the body you want your  image(s) on.  The shop is very clean, never in disarray or disrepair. When tattooing, Daniel stresses the utmost standards of health and safety by wrapping his arsenal of tools up, washes his hands constantly, wears vinyl gloves and changes them frequently, and uses single-use needles. I've been in shops where you can tell their priority is not public safety. Everyone at the shop is very friendly and demented so bring your best lol's face!Daniel shares a studio with Wil Gonzalez who is also very talented.
