I had gone there for my 18th birthday to get a very simple 3 lined tattoo. It was $100 which is a bit over priced, especially for the quality. The ink bled, never peeled and is raised above my skin from him pushing the needle too far scarring me improperly. I wish I had a better experience. I had a great experience here. I walked in on a Friday midday and was lucky enough to be taken back within about 10 minutes because Josh (the owner) had a no-show. He worked efficiently and did a great job on my small tattoo. Pricing was extremely reasonable and the shop was bright and clean. So came in as a walk-in on the 4/27 just to talk and get my idea out and get an estimate and look at some work. Well ended up talking with Vince who I must say is AMAZING, he literally went over my idea typed it up formatted it, looked at different size options. Even though we couldn't go with my original idea he helped me figure out another option. Then the next day on which was my birthday he made me feel really comfortable and finished tattooing my whole back in about an hours time, with the least amount of pain. Called two weeks ago asking for an appointment (for my first tattoo), I already had an artist in mind, the receptionist asked what I wanted (just three words on my arm) he laughed and said that would be a walk in and to call on the day of..I called yesterday and was told to just come in, I came in at 6:30 and they were booked till closing at 9. Was told to comeback the next day at 12. I arrived at 12:20, a group of 3 was already there. I  was told that nick will do it when he returns from his coffee run, nick returned and I was informed that he actually had an appointment to do already and that Vince will do mine in an hour after he finishes the guests that we're already there..I left my name and number and was told that they'll call at 1:30.. they called at 2:30 saying they'll take me at 3.They wouldn't let me make an appointment and then jerked me around and wasted my time when a first tattoo is already an intimidating experienceEnded up going to somewhere else before they even called back. The artist I saw was very brusque and unprofessional, his line work was rushed and a piece that should have taken at least 30 minutes was rushed into 15. I have been to several other shops for larger and more detailed pieces and have never been this dissatisfied with a piece or with the attitude of the artist. I will not bemoan the price as I knew what I was getting into, but the work was sloppy, lazy, and not reflective of the work my mom and sister have received from other artists at the same location. If you do decide to visit heroes and ghosts, I strongly recommend meeting with your artist ahead of time and discussing details with them to hopefully avoid the same disappointment I experienced. I have already made an appointment with my favorite artist at a different shop to clean up the piece but am sorry it was necessary as my sister and mom spoke so highly of this shop. Read Less

Great tattoo shop! Probably the only one in Richmond I'd trust with my own tattoos. Of course, I'm a bit biased, because my friends and my boyfriend work here. Nonetheless, I'm objectively very impressed with their work and work ETHIC.I've seen the guys (and lady - Jess) take walk-in after walk-in and deliver quality work every single time, along with fair pricing. Remember, you get what you pay for with tattoos, though. Their pricing is fair, depending on your request! All of them are exceptional artists. This place was recommended by a local tattooed waitress after myself and 2 friends decided we needed matching tattoos on our reunion holiday! We phoned and they said pop by they could fit us in no problem. We were tattooed by Nick who didn’t know quite what had hit him but he was absolutely lovely, so professional and friendly and just made us Brits feel super welcome and well looked after. I was on a waitlist to get a tattoo done my Mitchell. The night before my appointment, he emailed me to ask me exactly what I wanted in my tattoo. When I arrived the next day, the staff at the front was very welcoming and Mitchell was very quick to take me back. He was very professional, making sure I was comfortable at all times. Won't darken their doorstep again...made an appointment, waited a week, 2 hrs before I was supposed to be in the chair I get a call the artist ( and I use that term loosely) doesn't think he can do the tattoo...I see several things wrong with this.. 1- 2 hrs before...dude had a week to back out, that's a week I wasted I coulda used waiting on a real artist 2- It was a simple design, if I can draw it then an "artist" should be able to handle it too 3- Dude didn't even call...someone else from the shop called...didn't have the balls to cancel himself There are plenty of shops in the area I suggest you go elsewhere if you want to deal with a professional Read Less

This is the place to be if you are serious about spending your hard earned money on quality ink. I can't speak about all of the staff artists, but in general the atmosphere at Heroes and Ghosts has been friendly and professional...plus you can tell they pride themselves on keeping a clean shop. I can speak on one artist in particular...Mitchell Canter. So far we're working through a solid chest piece which will be flowing over the right shoulder into a half sleeve. I've s...at 2 times for him, about 4 hrs the first set and 2.5hrs the second. He is a true professional in every sense of the word, and you can tell he is a master of his chosen craft. I've enjoyed working with him and utilizing his love for the art and creativity to bring my original ideas to the next level. I can't wait to finish the project and will be sure to post pics once complete. I recently moved to the Richmond area from NY and was VERY particular about finding an artist I trusted and whose talent reflected the finely detailed work I was searching for. Mitchell was extremely easy to work with, had me come in for an initial consultation, and has had great communication throughout our process thus far. Firstly, the staff is great. I am a bit older and I didn't feel like anyone was judging me based on my age (I'm in my mid 40's) or my old tattoos. They were very friendly and welcoming. I had searched a while to find someone who I wanted to do my work and came across Mitchell's work and he is a true artist in every sense of the word. He spent a good amount of time talking to me about what I wanted, what was doable and we came up with a design I am very happy with. Not only that, he is extremely knowledge about his craft. Love this shop, always my go-to for tattoos. Most of mine I had done by Josh Richey and they still look great. Yesterday I was tattooed by Nick Barnett for the first time and he really took care of me. I walked in just to talk about putting together a memorial tattoo for my grandma who passed away last week and he was very helpful and accommodating. He went ahead and took care of half of my tattoo yesterday and we are finishing it next week which is even more than I could have asked for. Josh did an amazing job on my Chronicles of Narnia: the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe tattoo. I've had meaningful tattoos before, but I cried. He was great on every front from time and communication to the end result. My husband and I have been coming to this shop for years now and we won't go anywhere else, even though we live 3 hours away in North Carolina. Clean shop, friendly staff, and not overly priced like some of the shops in the area. My first tattoo was my shin and my artist lowered the price from what he originally told me (he goes by the hour and it didn't take as long as he thought it would.) He could've taken my money and not said a think since it was the agree upon price but he docked I think it was $70 and this was when I first started going there. He didn't even know me and had no reason to do me any favors. Im not much of a talking during tattoos but I was laughing and chatting with him the whole time and it went by so fast. Went in for my consultation In September with Mitchell, he took photos of my arm we discussed what I wanted and pricing etc. We set everything up and unfortunately work conflicted with my schedule. I rescheduled. As my tattoo date was approaching I get a phone call from the individual who does Mitchell's bookings, asking if I wanted to schedule.... I told him I was ready scheduled for November, THEY FORGOT to put me in the books he said. So yet again had to move the date to now December. In December I had to have my gallbladder removed and it was the week before the tattoo appointment. I called to make sure it was still okay to tattoo and the same guy that always answers told me, for health reasons they prefer me heal, which I agree w that. So finally set for February 18 at 5pm. They call at 1 to CONFIRM, and then I head to Cary town because the traffic and my anxiety. So I pop in the shop at 230 or so to see if I can get paperwork out the way and typical tattoo ego appeared where it was just come back at 5. So at 4pm (one hour) before I need to come in, I get a call from the shop. Saying that Mitchell has forgotten what he was supposed to tattoo, and wanted to just do another consultation. Are u serious?! I asked why I was confirmed for an appointment if he didn't have anything drawn, their excuse was because my consult was 5 months ago and he sees so many people a day that he just can't keep track. Really?? Because you book months in advance anyway, so normally your schedule two - three months out to begin with. So what's the difference? Not to mention you took photos, created a file and even have emails from me about my tattoo. I was then told if I come back at 5 to consult he already had a 5pm so I'd have to wait. But yet told me had noone else on the books. This shop is disorganized as hell, and makes the artists look like the stigma given to them. It took me 1 year to research and pick an artist. 1 year!!! I picked Mitchell and this is the service I get. Thanks for nothing!!! I hope the owner sees this and actually cares a little more than the person responsible for the bookings. Read Less
