First off, I will just say that I do not know how great all of the other artists are. I'm only reviewing one artist, Jay. The shop looks really clean and they have "private" rooms that they tattoo in, so it's not all out in the open when you get tattooed like in other shops...although I don't really mind the open shops but separate rooms has its ups.
As I first said, I am reviewing Jay, no one else, I do not know if they are great artists or bad artists. (Although I looked at Papa D's work and it looks pretty amazing and I really wish that I got tattooed by him instead).
I regret getting tattooed by Jay. I had my forearm and chest/collarbone area done. Right after I got my forearm done, I decided that I wanted to laser it off. I had a female dancer tattooed and it was....nothing like I wanted. The line work was off in a section of her hair, where it looks like he got shaky and tried to redo it over but instead made two shaky lines next together. There was a section of hair that was not "closed"...if that made sense...which actually was not in the picture I gave him. There was this part of a hair section where the tip closes but the tip is dragged on and then made a sharp hook. The eyes are closed in the pic but on my arm, instead of the eye line and the lid line being parallel to each other, he connected them and made it look like an open eye with no pupil. He did way too much shading, by the time I was actually able to see that he was shading around the pic, it was too late to stop him. The shading is so dark that it's as dark as the outline. He also shaded the figure and he shaded all some places that made absolutely no sense to shade. He shaded the middle of the upper arm...exactly in the middle, not on the bottom side, but the middle...so it's like she has this huge dent in her arm. He shaded underneath the eye and above it so her eye looks sunken...like as if she's dead. She also has a huge underbite...meaning her lower lip sticks out way too far out.
I had a quote done on my upper chest, right underneath my collarbone. It was done in "Scriptina" font, it's really simple...not really cursive, but more like curvy print (you can google this if you want). The first three words were made really thick and the rest of the words are thin...I wanted it to be thin, which is why I chose that font, so I'm not sure why the first 3 words are thick and the rest are thin. There's a part where the curve of the capital N runs through an s from the previous word and that's not connected. He made the capital T, "dagger" like when it's supposed to be thin and a bit curvy.
All in all, I regret ever getting tattooed by him...I really wish I went to someone else...I wish I looked at everyone's portfolios before choosing Jay. I would have loved getting tattooed by Papa D, but of course, I realized this after I had the tattoos done. I wouldn't recommend getting tattooed by Jay, if he can mess up simple lettering, shade in the most obviously wrong places and shade around the picture as dark as the outlines, then you don't know what he can mess up on yours. I don't know if he always does bad tattoos but I'm just saying that my experience is awful. I went to him for the cheap price but now I'll be paying way more for laser surgeries to fade out the tattoo than just getting it done by someone else in the first place for more money. I've had tattoos done by three (4 if you include Jay) tattooists and I have not had any majors problems like this and they were all $150 tattoos as well. And like I said before, I do not know how well the other tattooists tattoo and hate to put a poor rating for the whole shop when it was one artist, but I thought I should get the word out on this poor tattoo "artist".
