Let me start off by saying that Dave is so professional. I made an appointment with him back in August and I had a lot going on and couldn't make it...so he kindly rescheduled with me and was so sweet about it. He scheduled me pretty quickly after I asked him this past week and he got me in today! He's very punctual and doesn't waste your time. I asked for a vine/leaf design to go under my quote (which he did for me last year) and it turned out beautiful! I was in the market for a tattoo. I had a design picked out and was looking for someone in the Kyle area to do it. I came across a tattoo shop right across the street from my house. Went in, had to wait 30 minutes to talk to a tattoo artist. Then i was told my design was "cheesy" and needed to be altered. Then i was told I couldn't get in for a month! Then the real kicker was they were going to charge $800! I said no thank you and left. I went home and started researching other tattoo places. I messaged a couple of them on Facebook and didn't get a response. Then I saw David Barry's name and saw that he had good reviews. So I thought to myself why not message him and see what happens. I sent him my design and he told me to come in so that wet could discuss the design. When I first arrived, I couldn't see where his shop was because it is so inconspicuous. He is located to the left side of Nephews on the square. He has a small quiet shop without all of the flashy signs a lot of other shops have. When I got there, he introduced himself and showed me what he had done with the design I sent him! So he had been working on it while i was on my way. So we talked about it for a few minutes and then proceeded to get my "cheesy" tattoo...lol... It took only 2.5 hours instead of the 8 the other place quoted me. On top of that it cost 250.00, NOT the 800.00 I was quoted by the other place. I walked out pleased because he listened to me and did it the way I wanted it. We had to stop once that portion was finished because it was late and I couldn't do anymore that night. After a few days of healing decided to go back for the rest. Which my oldest daughter drew. He did an amazing job on my final portion which was wolf paw prints with colors to represent each one of my kids. the colors were done in watercolors. everything came out perfect. So if you're wanting someone who will listen to your ideas and actually go with them AND is reasonably priced along with VERY experienced, David Barry is your guy. I have been recommending him to all of my friends, coworkers, and neighbors! When you go by, be prepared to get it done that day if you have your design in hand and ideas ready to be told!...So David, if you're reading this, Thank you from the bottom of my heart! If you are looking to get a tattoo here’s something you should know: Many states regulate tattooing, unfortunately, Texas isn’t one of them. By “regulate” I mean there are strict educational requirements needed before one can become a Licensed Professional Tattoo Artist. In states like New York, New Jersey and California to name a few, the educational requirements include: * Proof of having experience in the operation of a tattooing facility as a full time occupation or a designated operator for a period of at least 12 months and shall furnish all the following forms of proof to fulfill this experience requirements: * A signed testament from a previous employer that the applicant has been tattooing professionally for at least one full year. * Proof that the applicant operates out of a legitimate business. * Proof of Apprenticeship for a minimum of 2,000 hours under the direct supervision of a Licensed Tattoo Artist * Submit a minimum of 10 original photographs of tattoos which the applicant has personally preformed * A minimum of three signed testaments from previous clients * Certificate of Completion of a bloodborne pathogen course by the American Red Cross or The Alliance of Professional Tattooists. I have to agree that I have never had a better experience than I did getting my tattoo with Dave. He took his time and made absolutely sure I was happy with my tattoo before I walked out the door! He also specializes in cover-ups which I plan on going back next month to add onto the one he just did and cover up another one. If you can dream it up Dave can make it happen in a clean comfortable setting. Dave is a family man with customer satisfaction in mind. Pay a visit to the Tiki you wont be dissapointed. Don't let the fact that this place is new stop you from checking it out. Sometimes the new places are where the fresh talent is at and I gotta say this is one of those places!I stopped in last night and the owner Matt was still down to do a piece for me even though they were only supposed to be open for another 15 minutes.. He stayed open an extra hour and a half to finish my piece, and was very friendly and relaxed about it. He did an extremely amazing job. This was my first tattoo and I could not be happier with how it came out. It's fucking sick!! This is a super chill place and I'm so happy with my tattoo that I will most definitely be coming back in the future when I'm in San Marcos again. I got a mermaid piece since I'm moving I wanted to get something to remind me of San Marcos, and since the Mermaid is the town's figure to represent the river here I figured it was perfect.And I was right.
