I've been coming here with my wife for the past 5 years and We've never been disappointed. 6 or 7 out of 9 of my Wife's tattoos are from Mike and for myself, just 2 of 3. We joked around with Mike to not retire because we dont want anyone else to tattoo us. I just got my outline done for a full sleeve and the artwork is just incredible!! Line work and the creativity is perfect. Mike, Salina and Mingo are incredible people. All very professional and friendly. I had an embarrassing moment where I actually puked the first 10mins into the tattoo and all 3 were very understanding and professional about it. I told Mike that I felt light headed and without skipping a beat pulled the trash over to me and I did my thing. Salina came over and prepared a wet towel and water to cool me off and Mingo brought a couple starburst for a little sugar. I felt SO embarrassed but they all were cool with it. My wife and I went there in May of 2018.  We went to get our first tattoos together and after much researching and reading reviews, we settle on Freedom Machine.  We went for a consolation and we were quoted an approximate amount for our matching tattoos; something simple...Roman numerals of our anniversary date. We got our tattoos (the numbers were not even an inch tall) in less than 45mins for both of us.  When we were charged $200 each we were shocked to hear it was more than we were quoted, but we still paid.  I was more so shocked when I learned from talking to many other tattoo artists and enthusiasts that we paid $200 for a $30-$50 amount of work!  My advice, if you're new to getting a tattoo, don't go here.  If you do go, make sure you get a price locked in before you get your work done or you will get ripped off like we did!  Other than that, this place is for regulars that they know or people who are experienced in tattoos.  I want another tattoo, but knowing what I know now, I'm very apprehensive and I surely will not return to Freedom Machine.  I will also tell everyone I know that is interested in getting a tattoo to steer clean of this place, they'll rip you off! Just got out of the shop after sitting several hours. Mingo is an AMAZING artist. I have been searching a long time since I moved to the area for an artist that I feel comfortable with and i'm so happy that I found Mingo.The shop itself is very nice. It's got tons of flash all over the walls and just screams of a classic tattoo shop. Mike and Mingo are both excellent artists! I highly recommend them! They each have a certain style which can cover most of anything you want done. They are very upfront and will tell you if an idea is possible or not and will not tattoo anyone if the idea will end up looking less than perfect. Mike was so friendly and professional yesterday when he did foot tattoos for me. He clearly explained every step starting with the images I asked for all the way to aftercare. The shop is 100 + years old which gave me a lot to study while he was working!  It's a great environment with lots of natural light. Disregard all of the bad reviews on this tattoo shop, they have clearly never been to anything random shop in the austin area. First off, location sets a whole theme to the place. Very traditional and they are very respectful and try to work something out the best they can but the guys do have bookings every single day so it may take a few days to get what u want. Mike did my tattoo in 2 sessions outline first then color. He is a seriously awesome guy he has had a wild life and is a great person to talk to. His tattoo work is always perfect. I expected my tattoo to be a bit more american traditional with simple filled in colors but instead he surprised me with beautiful detail and shading, still american traditional but so much better than I had ever envisioned. I've been to shops all over austin and even oliver pecks shop in dallas and was treated like a newbie because I don't have many visible tattoos. A lot of artists tend to do that  however at freedom machine I've never felt any pressure or judgement from the guys, they're really open with ideas and people. I have been in the market for a tattoo a long time. I have looked around for years and found the perfect place only a mile from my house. These guys are all incredibly gifted artists and all around cool. I picked Mike as my artist as I was impressed by what he did to a friend of mine. I met with him and gave him my ideas and emailed him some suggestions. I was a little afraid because when I got there he was still drawing out my tattoo. This is going to be with me for a long time and I didn't want a rush job. Turns out I was afraid for nothing. He constantly made suggestions as for color and told me what he was doing as he went. My opinion changed the next day though. I took pictures first and second day and compared them. Holy Toledo batman! It looked TWICE as good after the swelling went down! The colors and attention to detail are amazing! He incorporated everything I asked and even topped it! This looks like it should be framed and hung on a wall!If anyone is looking for a tattoo this is the place to come. I see others even come from out of town. I can't blame them. It is housed in a historic building and occupies what used to be a turn of the century bank. The safe and other remnants are still there. That adds to the cool ambiance. They were blasting some really old tunes too. I really loved listening to Buddy Holly. Great music even 50 years after his passing. Is it pricey? That depends. No it is not cheap true. You are paying for a high quality work of art that is custom made and drawn on you and will be with you forever. You get what you pay for.  Ryan and David and Mike are all great artists. it is money well spent. My tattoo is big. Huge even. It defines me and says a lot about me. It is worth every penny. Let me start by saying: I'm a very short, very round, nearly-40yr old woman who has been a stay-at-home mom for over 18 years and I have Fibromyalgia (I feel way more pain than the average joe).  I spent over three years searching for a tattoo shop where I wasn't looked at like an alien, treated like a leper (I wish I were exaggerating), out right ignored, or told they wouldn't work with me because of my illness...it didn't help that I was a total tattoo virgin.I'd been into nearly every tattoo shop north of the river that wasn't actually on 6th St. the day I walked into Freedom Machine.  And, truth be told, I wasn't very hopeful.The warmth with which I was greeted completely took me my surprise.  I tentatively explained what I was looking for: a whole back piece.  Again, the girl I was talking to surprised me with actual interest.  She gave me the obligatory books to look through, and I was very pleasantly surprised a third time: the art done in this shop is amazing!I set up a time to meet with Ryan Dodson, after being deeply impressed by his work.  Then I went home and did my homework about the shop and about Ryan, everything I learned gave me hope that I'd finally found someone who could do the work I wanted done so badly.I've been working with Ryan for nearly a year now, he's fun, funny, remarkably talented, totally approachable with even the dumbest questions, and, best of all for me, has a very light hand.  He's been willing to work with me around my hectic schedule, and amazingly understanding and patient about my pain levels.  He's introduced ideas I love and we're incorporating into my full back piece, and he's suggested things I wasn't into without trying to dictate to me and without that horrible ego thing that seems to run rampant in some shops.I now have two tattoos, a very feminine vine-like tattoo on the side of my breast and a gorgeous Mockingbird on the top left quarter of my back (it's a segment of the full back piece).  Both of which have fully healed remarkably quickly.I can't recommend Freedom Machine highly enough; the atmosphere is casual and fun, the people are the definition of cool, and the art that comes out of there is beautiful! Getting your first tattoo should be a right of passage that comes when you are ready to receive it. I had always taken a point of pride that I had no tattoos, and that I just couldn't think of anything I would want permanently attached to my body.After years of looking at ink art, and researching artist that live in my area, I settled on Freedom Machine as my first experience.I walked into the shop in mid September, and after talking to David Parker about my ideas for a first Tattoo, and what I wanted it to convey, David took about 20 minutes and drew up something that later would become my first Ink.My first indication that this was a good fit, was his willingness to listen to my ideas and his reassurance of my first Tat fears.The second indication that I choose correctly was the fact that David was booked for the next month. We set a date for October 25th. a month later.When I arrived on the 25th, David was ready and waiting for me, he had his station all set up for our session, he touched up the drawing he made for me, and after taking some measurements, he transferred the drawing to a form that would imprint it on my arm.The nerves built up for a sec, and after the first line, I was ready, and for the next two hours, David was gentle with the needle, and responsive to my pain when I indicated it. Amazing first session and amazing artist.The other guys in the shop that day, Ryan and Mike, were all supportive and it was cool seeing how they all interact naturally around clients as they gave other people tattoos.At the end of the first two hour session, I had a great looking outline, some shading and a sore arm. After giving me some care instructions, we set out a date for touch ups and color, and again we had to schedule a month out, since David is fully booked all the time. Cant wait for the final look.I went back the day after Thanksgiving to have some color add to the Tattoo. David Parker worked for another hour adding colors to the already beautiful outline he did the last time. Still have one more sessions to finish this bad boy and I am already planning my next Ink.I decided to post this before the Tattoo is finished. I will be going back on a few days after  Xmas. Trying to find a tattoo parlor in a new state is like trying to find decent Chinese food in a new state; choose wrong and your skin or stomach could be in all sorts of trouble.Having said that, if you need a tattoo and you are located in the state of Texas, Freedom Machine is the place to go! Was referred to Dave Parker by a friend who had work done by him that I liked. I gave him a call and sent an email with some photos of the tattoo I already had on my inner arm and what I wanted to add to it, Dave was real cool about everything and, after picking a date/time that I would come in, he said he would look at what I sent and "do his homework". When I got to the shop after driving from Dallas, it was apparent that Dave had indeed done his homework...and aced the design for the frame to go around the word I already had on my inner right bicep! Living up to the other reviews, his sketch was way cooler than what I had suggested and thought up so we went with that. Getting tattooed in a shop that somewhat resembles a westen saloon from the outside while listening to "Rumble"-by Link Wray was an awesome experience. Dave did a eggcellent job and the tattoo looks great. Working with Dave was great from start to finish and I will definitely be coming back to Freedom Machine and referencing them in the future. Now Ryan has opened his own shop in Pville!Ryan is professional, shows up on time, has good clean work and is an all around good guy. He has now tattooed over 10 of my coworkers and many,many of my friends and even family.  I have been tattooed in many shops around the country, by various artists and have more than 50 hours worth of ink myself so I hope that qualifies me to write this review.His crew there is nice and in no way "stuck up" (no rockstar attitude).  They are good artists and good people.
