I walked into Por Vida to get some advice from Gabe who was very friendly and open. While I was in the cool, small shop, I noticed an awesome hand drawing on the wall. When I asked about who's it was, I was certain I needed a new tattoo by this artist I'd just met, Desiree. Desiree was exactly what anyone looking to get a tattoo should strive for in an artist. She was extremely open to collaboration and consulting in person, on the phone or via email. We corresponded over email for a while as I told her what I wanted and she asked me even more questions to ensure that we were on the same page. With every email, I grew more and more confident that I'd found someone with whom I could entrust something as serious as a new tattoo. When the day of the tattoo came, I was excited. There were a few last minute tweaks that Desiree did on the original design, as she was determined to give me exactly what I wanted. The tattoo was done on my sternum and easily more painful than my other pieces but my artist was kind and comforting and humored me when I asked if she'd please announce every once in a while what percentage the tattoo was at, "50%....65ish%...90%," which I really appreciated. She even played some mellow acoustic music during the process at risk of being scolded by her metal-loving colleagues! It's been exactly a month since I got my new sternum piece (one free touch-up is provided but I still haven't forgotten the pain!) and I'm still in awe that what I had imagined is exactly what I got. I would definitely recommend getting work done by this artist, especially if you're looking for something traditional or neo-traditional. Her work is clean, line work is very good, and original designs are balanced. Desiree is a sweetheart and has a great career of tattooing ahead of her. The shop is neat and clean and has a really cool mellow vibe. It is small so it gets crowded fast so it's not recommended that you bring a posse. The other two artists, Gabe and Alvaro, are funny and nice and very talented. Their work is all over the walls of the shop so it's easy to fall in love with any of the pieces that are for display.
