This review is long overdue, but as we all know, life can get hectic and sometimes we have to put even the things we really want to do on hold. So, better late than never I say! Here goes... Gully ...
This review is long overdue, but as we all know, life can get hectic and sometimes we have to put even the things we really want to do on hold. So, better late than never I say! Here goes... Gully Cat Tattoo is a small old house that was turned into a unique tattoo shop in Austin. I actually picked this shop (and the artist I'm about to give mad props to) after doing some research online. I was looking for a specific kind of artist to bring my idea to life. After looking at the artists profiles and work I decided I'd like to meet with Skyler Payne. I called the shop before heading over just to make sure someone would be there for me to chat with, there was so I hopped in my car. When I arrived there was only one artist in at the time and it was Skyler! Sounds silly but, it made me feel like this was fate! So we talked and came up with a plan to bring my tattoo to life. Two weeks later I drove back to Austin from Dallas to see what my new tattoo was going to look like. I knew Skyler wasn't going to let me down with his artistic talent (but I was a bit nervous not seeing the final art before driving back to Austin). When I arrived and saw the artwork sitting out for me I was more than happy, Skyler had drawn up an amazing Phoenix to tattoo on my back. I won't go into much detail but when it comes to eating, I'm not really the best at this, and didn't eat before my appointment. NOT A GOOD IDEA and I knew it but, when you're not hungry it's hard to eat!! So about 10 min into the tattoo I knew if we didn't stop I was going to pass out! Skyler handled the situation with grace and poise, he dosed me up with some sweet tarts, emergen-C, and sent my daughter across the street to get me a taco! (which btw the taco joint right across the street from Gully Cat is amazing sorry I don't remember the name of it though). This got me feeling normal again so we proceeded for the next 3 1/2 hours. The end result was exactly what I was looking for. Skyler did an EXCELLENT job, he's an exceptional, unique individual with an amazing talent. I highly recommend seeing Skyler (or any of the talented individuals) at Gully Cat Tattoo.

I really appreciate how he wasn't afraid to tell me his professional opinion while respecting what I wanted. I found my new tattoo guy and the price was totally fair.

My wife, Julianne, was recommended by a friend to go here to get tattoos. The atmosphere is relaxed and has a really calm and friendly energy. The interior is decorated with murals, statues, and a wide range of interesting artifacts. Mike was the tattoo artist who did the work. We showed him some drawings and pictures about the tattoo concepts my wife wanted, and talked about them. Mike went and made some drawings of what he was visualizing and then showed them to my wife. We then went into his parlor and he made my wife comfortable lying down by his station. I asked if I could take pictures and he was very cool about it; he even offered me his wide angle lens to use on my smart phone camera. Mike was extremely professional and made sure my wife was comfortable and that the tattoo process wasn't too intense or painful as he did two different images on my wife's arm. After it was finished, Mike quoted us a really fair, almost surprising, price for the work. We will definitely be returning to Gully Cat Tattoo for future tattoo work, and highly recommend this place and Mike to anyone looking for a safe, friendly, and professional tattoo establishment in Austin, Texas.

The tattoo itch hit me for the first time in a few years and I crudely drew something up and called this place, really not for any particular, special reason other than mostly positive reviews. I've been told tattoo artists don't like when people bring in their own designs, but I really don't care, because it's going on my damn body in exchange for money.Skyler was my man and I easily set up an appointment, and I sent him my drawing. He made it 1000% better - different, but way better - and while I was getting it done, we made dick jokes. It was a super laidback atmosphere and he was considerate and careful about how he jabbed a needle into my skin. I got the sense that it was still his piece even though it originated as something scrawled from my brain. And after it was done... I asked, what was I even doing with my other tattoos? This one is way better. So yes, go here.

These are hands down the most talented people in the business and you should run, not walk, to Gully Cat right now. You can book em ahead of time, or walk-in and get the sickest inkjob you've ever seen. Believe it.

I would highly recommend Gully Cat Tattoo, especially Skyler Payne. He is professional, very easy going and makes everyone feel comfortable as soon as you walk thru the door. I sat for several sessions and over 20+ hours for a sleeve. I'm very pleased with the end results and get numerous compliments on his work. And sitting that long there, I've watched all the artists treat everyone that came in warm and friendly. I've been to too many places where they treat you with such arrogance. I steer everyone asking me where to go here and I will be going back for any other work.

I was in town for only a few weeks and wanted to get a tat I've been looking to add for a while. Did some research and ultimately decided on Gully Cat due to the favorable reviews and location. Skyler did not disappoint. I was able to set up a date to get it done and we agreed on the idea for the layout. I actually had to change the time we originally agreed on due to a work issue and he was very accommodating in my request. This guy has some serious skills! His shading was on point and his lines were crisp. He was very methodical in his approach and considering the size of the tattoo, I was very impressed by how quickly he was able to knock it out. We even made a slight change to the design mid way through (at his suggestion) that made it even cooler and more unique. I have gotten nothing but compliments since I got it and out of the 6 tattoos I have this is by far my favorite. Bro you out did yourself! Thanks for the great piece and I would recommend Skyler and Gully Cat to anyone looking for top notch work in a professional, laid back environment with fair pricing.

I couldn't have been more excited and happy about what he came up with. The tattoo itself is a memorial for my late husband and, as such, was especially important to me. When we originally met, we talked about putting it on my leg. At the last... minute, I came back and asked him to move it to my arm - and he happily redrew it to fit my arm. I had my appt today and not only was the design amazing, the colors and the tattoo itself exceeded every possible idea I possibly could have had. Mike didn't just knock it out of the park, he knocked it out of the universe. If I can, I'll be going back next week for another one. I highly recommend them! See More

After a few days some of the ink even came off and the quality of the ink is very cheap and bad. I called the owner of the shop who insisted I must go there in person to discuss the tattoo. When I get there Mike the owner starts telling me how there is nothing they can do about it because I signed a waiver and he was very argumentative and unhelpful calling me illogical, telling me how I dont know anything about tattoos and ends our conversation by calling me a stupid B****. Are you serious? I have never met such a rude,unhelpful business owner in my life. Who does absolutely nothing to help their customers Do not go here unless you want some horrible tattoo work done l. Mike the owner is terrible.

Nikki is the best tattoo artist I have ever been to. Her lines are clean and her color pops. It doesn't hurt that she's also a delightful human. I've had two tattoos designed and inked by her (one of which is a cover-up), and they are both excellent. Nikki took the descriptions and pictures I provided, put her spin on them, and drew something beautiful both times. I will continue to get all my work done by her as long as she's here in town. The shop itself is really cute. The three times I have been in it the music has been great and varied (no hours of raging death metal like you have probably experienced at other shops), and Nikki's tattooing space is like a rainbow unicorn feminist ball-busting dream. Pro tip: book in advance because Nikki's skill is no secret - she usually has a really full calendar.

As far as the shop goes it was very clean and the rest of the staff seemed just as welcoming and friendly as Nikki was. You know I am extremely happy with your work, Mike Terrell, twho else would I trust to put my treasures of my Mom, your Gacky, my Granddaughter, Annebelle, and other designs meaningful to me only. Rosela too, loves her work. I recall the very first one done in the late 90's when I lived in Lubbock. It was a cover-up which came out super, remember it was the river snake eating the Bud can, an inspiration of yours while tubing the river. The eagle remembering 9-11 is really cool and means a lot. An Austin land mark for at least 10 years that I know of, Gully Cat Tattoo is a shop that screams Austin flavor. Usually when you walk into a tat shop in Austin you feel like you have to have knuckle work to feel welcome. When I entered Gully Cat, the owner walked right over and treated me like he had known me for years. He listened to what it was I was wanting done, made some simple suggestions to tighten up my ideas and made me feel comfortable talking about art. My entire experience from walking in the door for the first time to discussing the after care of my work was A+. If you are looking to have solid work done by a true Austin Artist, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't give Gully Cat the business.

OK. I haven't been tattooed by anyone at Gully Cat, but I can tell you all that I was most favorably impressed by the treatment and concern I received by the staff. I had a pretty bad car wreck right in front of their shop. (Not my fault, by the way.) My car was totalled, but everyone who worked in the shop ran out to see if the other guy and I were OK. They stuck around to see that we had the situation under control and that the two parties involved in the collision were going to be able to resolve the situation. They were genuinely stand-up folks!I went back in a few hours later when all the dust settled (literally and figuratively) and thanked them for their concern. They were very amicable. I then asked if I could leave my heap of a vehicle behind their shop while I got in touch with AAA and a towing company. They were accommodating there. (I point this out because they have several Do-Not-Park-Here-or-You-Will-Be-Towed signs behind their establishment.)I do have several tattoos from many places. I live in Houston and, at the time, was most concerned about getting this all cleaned up and getting back on the road in one way or another. After dealing with them this way and taking a look at what they have in their portfolios online, I, indeed, plan to stop in and throw some business their way someday.Thanks, guys! I appreciate your concern.

He took a cheesy '90's tribal tattoo (my first one) and created a BEAUTIFUL cherry blossom design---FREE-HANDED! To me, the shop isn't your typical tattoo shop. It has a very eclectic feel to it, and there is always great music playing.I highly recommend Gully Cat Tattoo (and Mike T.)!!!

I chose Mike at Gully Cat Tattoo to do it and it was far and away the right choice!The shop has a very warm atmosphere, it's clean, the music is great (if you gotta be there for hours on end, that IS important!), and you avoid the gawkers on 6th Street that come in to see someone get tattooed as if it's something on a "must do on your Austin vacation" list. (is it just part of having that "Austin is wierd" experience?)But, the biggest and most important part of it all: the tattoos. Mike took my thoughts and reference materials and designed a piece FAR beyond my expectations. The lines are clean, the colors are bright and he wasn't afraid to take some chances, mix some custom colors and truly use his training to create a piece of art I'm now proud to wear forever. My one "thing" (would it be a Yelp review without one?): Wish I'd been able to get a bottled water or a Diet DP or something on our breaks. Certainly not a big deal... just sayin'. If I'd cared THAT much, I'd have said something. Maybe bring your own when you come for your appointment.When it's time for new ink again, I'm headed back to Mike and Gully Cat Tattoo; I think I've found "my tattoo shop". Gully Cat has been in that little house on S. 1st for 12 years and it's clear that with work like this they aren't going anywhere! Do yourself a favor and avoid the big name shops and give yourself more of a boutique tattoo experience. You wear it for a lifetime... don't you deserve the best?

There are so many tattooers and shops in Austin. Glad I ended up here. Looking to get some large work done, a buddy recommended I talk to Mike at Gully Cat. He took my original ideas and worked them into something better than I imagined. He's done both of my 3/4 sleeves, each in different styles, and both turned out beautifully. Check out his portfolio, the work speaks for itself.The shop itself is clean, comfortable and constantly evolving. Every time I drop by for an appointment something is new - art, walls changing color, it has a personality of it's own. Just watch out for the poorly placed telephone pole when you're pulling into the lot.

This review is long overdue, but as we all know, life can get hectic and sometimes we have to put even the things we really want to do on hold. So, better late than never I say! Here goes... Gully Cat Tattoo is a small old house that was turned into a unique tattoo shop in Austin. I actually picked this shop (and the artist I'm about to give mad props to) after doing some research online. I was looking for a specific kind of artist to bring my idea to life. After looking at the artists profiles and work I decided I'd like to meet with Skyler Payne. I called the shop before heading over just to make sure someone would be there for me to chat with, there was so I hopped in my car. When I arrived there was only one artist in at the time and it was Skyler! Sounds silly but, it made me feel like this was fate! So we talked and came up with a plan to bring my tattoo to life. Two weeks later I drove back to Austin from Dallas to see what my new tattoo was going to look like. I knew Skyler wasn't going to let me down with his artistic talent (but I was a bit nervous not seeing the final art before driving back to Austin). When I arrived and saw the artwork sitting out for me I was more than happy, Skyler had drawn up an amazing Phoenix to tattoo on my back. I won't go into much detail but when it comes to eating, I'm not really the best at this, and didn't eat before my appointment. NOT A GOOD IDEA and I knew it but, when you're not hungry it's hard to eat!! So about 10 min into the tattoo I knew if we didn't stop I was going to pass out! Skyler handled the situation with grace and poise, he dosed me up with some sweet tarts, emergen-C, and sent my daughter across the street to get me a taco! (which btw the taco joint right across the street from Gully Cat is amazing sorry I don't remember the name of it though). This got me feeling normal again so we proceeded for the next 3 1/2 hours. The end result was exactly what I was looking for. Skyler did an EXCELLENT job, he's an exceptional, unique individual with an amazing talent. I highly recommend seeing Skyler (or any of the talented individuals) at Gully Cat Tattoo.

My wife, Julianne, was recommended by a friend to go here to get tattoos. The atmosphere is relaxed and has a really calm and friendly energy. The interior is decorated with murals, statues, and a wide range of interesting artifacts. Mike was the tattoo artist who did the work. We showed him some drawings and pictures about the tattoo concepts my wife wanted, and talked about them. Mike went and made some drawings of what he was visualizing and then showed them to my wife. We then went into his parlor and he made my wife comfortable lying down by his station. I asked if I could take pictures and he was very cool about it; he even offered me his wide angle lens to use on my smart phone camera. Mike was extremely professional and made sure my wife was comfortable and that the tattoo process wasn't too intense or painful as he did two different images on my wife's arm. After it was finished, Mike quoted us a really fair, almost surprising, price for the work. We will definitely be returning to Gully Cat Tattoo for future tattoo work, and highly recommend this place and Mike to anyone looking for a safe, friendly, and professional tattoo establishment in Austin, Texas.

The tattoo itch hit me for the first time in a few years and I crudely drew something up and called this place, really not for any particular, special reason other than mostly positive reviews. I've been told tattoo artists don't like when people bring in their own designs, but I really don't care, because it's going on my damn body in exchange for money.Skyler was my man and I easily set up an appointment, and I sent him my drawing. He made it 1000% better - different, but way better - and while I was getting it done, we made dick jokes. It was a super laidback atmosphere and he was considerate and careful about how he jabbed a needle into my skin. I got the sense that it was still his piece even though it originated as something scrawled from my brain. And after it was done... I asked, what was I even doing with my other tattoos? This one is way better. So yes, go here.

I would highly recommend Gully Cat Tattoo, especially Skyler Payne. He is professional, very easy going and makes everyone feel comfortable as soon as you walk thru the door. I sat for several sessions and over 20+ hours for a sleeve. I'm very pleased with the end results and get numerous compliments on his work. And sitting that long there, I've watched all the artists treat everyone that came in warm and friendly. I've been to too many places where they treat you with such arrogance. I steer everyone asking me where to go here and I will be going back for any other work.

I was in town for only a few weeks and wanted to get a tat I've been looking to add for a while. Did some research and ultimately decided on Gully Cat due to the favorable reviews and location. Skyler did not disappoint. I was able to set up a date to get it done and we agreed on the idea for the layout. I actually had to change the time we originally agreed on due to a work issue and he was very accommodating in my request. This guy has some serious skills! His shading was on point and his lines were crisp. He was very methodical in his approach and considering the size of the tattoo, I was very impressed by how quickly he was able to knock it out. We even made a slight change to the design mid way through (at his suggestion) that made it even cooler and more unique. I have gotten nothing but compliments since I got it and out of the 6 tattoos I have this is by far my favorite. Bro you out did yourself! Thanks for the great piece and I would recommend Skyler and Gully Cat to anyone looking for top notch work in a professional, laid back environment with fair pricing.

I went in a couple of weeks ago and met with Mike and discussed what it was I wanted - gave him the "base" picture I was looking at and had him draw the actual design. I couldn't have been more excited and happy about what he came up with. The tattoo itself is a memorial for my late husband and, as such, was especially important to me. When we originally met, we talked about putting it on my leg. At the last... minute, I came back and asked him to move it to my arm - and he happily redrew it to fit my arm. I had my appt today and not only was the design amazing, the colors and the tattoo itself exceeded every possible idea I possibly could have had. Mike didn't just knock it out of the park, he knocked it out of the universe. If I can, I'll be going back next week for another one. I highly recommend them! See More

When I get there Mike the owner starts telling me how there is nothing they can do about it because I signed a waiver and he was very argumentative and unhelpful calling me illogical, telling me how I dont know anything about tattoos and ends our conversation by calling me a stupid B****. Are you serious? I have never met such a rude,unhelpful business owner in my life. Who does absolutely nothing to help their customers Do not go here unless you want some horrible tattoo work done l. Mike the owner is terrible.

Nikki is the best tattoo artist I have ever been to. Her lines are clean and her color pops. It doesn't hurt that she's also a delightful human. I've had two tattoos designed and inked by her (one of which is a cover-up), and they are both excellent. Nikki took the descriptions and pictures I provided, put her spin on them, and drew something beautiful both times. I will continue to get all my work done by her as long as she's here in town. The shop itself is really cute. The three times I have been in it the music has been great and varied (no hours of raging death metal like you have probably experienced at other shops), and Nikki's tattooing space is like a rainbow unicorn feminist ball-busting dream. Pro tip: book in advance because Nikki's skill is no secret - she usually has a really full calendar.

Usually when you walk into a tat shop in Austin you feel like you have to have knuckle work to feel welcome. When I entered Gully Cat, the owner walked right over and treated me like he had known me for years. He listened to what it was I was wanting done, made some simple suggestions to tighten up my ideas and made me feel comfortable talking about art. My entire experience from walking in the door for the first time to discussing the after care of my work was A+. If you are looking to have solid work done by a true Austin Artist, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't give Gully Cat the business.

Extremely professional, personable and well-run shop. Good vibes and no snobby attitudes. I worked with Baylen to design my half sleeve. She patiently exchanged ideas with me for a few days before finally finalizing her beautiful sketch. I couldn't be more pleased with the entire process and the outcome. Can't recommend Gully Cat enough. You won't be disappointed.

OK. I haven't been tattooed by anyone at Gully Cat, but I can tell you all that I was most favorably impressed by the treatment and concern I received by the staff. I had a pretty bad car wreck right in front of their shop. (Not my fault, by the way.) My car was totalled, but everyone who worked in the shop ran out to see if the other guy and I were OK. They stuck around to see that we had the situation under control and that the two parties involved in the collision were going to be able to resolve the situation. They were genuinely stand-up folks!I went back in a few hours later when all the dust settled (literally and figuratively) and thanked them for their concern. They were very amicable. I then asked if I could leave my heap of a vehicle behind their shop while I got in touch with AAA and a towing company. They were accommodating there. (I point this out because they have several Do-Not-Park-Here-or-You-Will-Be-Towed signs behind their establishment.)I do have several tattoos from many places. I live in Houston and, at the time, was most concerned about getting this all cleaned up and getting back on the road in one way or another. After dealing with them this way and taking a look at what they have in their portfolios online, I, indeed, plan to stop in and throw some business their way someday.Thanks, guys! I appreciate your concern.

I've been seeing Mike T. for over 10 years, and he has done amazing work on me. Not only has he ALWAYS created exactly what I wanted, but he did an AMAZING cover-up job! He took a cheesy '90's tribal tattoo (my first one) and created a BEAUTIFUL cherry blossom design---FREE-HANDED! To me, the shop isn't your typical tattoo shop. It has a very eclectic feel to it, and there is always great music playing.I highly recommend Gully Cat Tattoo (and Mike T.)!!!

I did my homework to find the right shop with the right artists for the tattoo I'd been thinking about for about 18 months... I chose Mike at Gully Cat Tattoo to do it and it was far and away the right choice!The shop has a very warm atmosphere, it's clean, the music is great (if you gotta be there for hours on end, that IS important!), and you avoid the gawkers on 6th Street that come in to see someone get tattooed as if it's something on a "must do on your Austin vacation" list. (is it just part of having that "Austin is wierd" experience?)But, the biggest and most important part of it all: the tattoos. Mike took my thoughts and reference materials and designed a piece FAR beyond my expectations. The lines are clean, the colors are bright and he wasn't afraid to take some chances, mix some custom colors and truly use his training to create a piece of art I'm now proud to wear forever. My one "thing" (would it be a Yelp review without one?): Wish I'd been able to get a bottled water or a Diet DP or something on our breaks. Certainly not a big deal... just sayin'. If I'd cared THAT much, I'd have said something. Maybe bring your own when you come for your appointment.When it's time for new ink again, I'm headed back to Mike and Gully Cat Tattoo; I think I've found "my tattoo shop". Gully Cat has been in that little house on S. 1st for 12 years and it's clear that with work like this they aren't going anywhere! Do yourself a favor and avoid the big name shops and give yourself more of a boutique tattoo experience. You wear it for a lifetime... don't you deserve the best?

There are so many tattooers and shops in Austin. Glad I ended up here. Looking to get some large work done, a buddy recommended I talk to Mike at Gully Cat. He took my original ideas and worked them into something better than I imagined. He's done both of my 3/4 sleeves, each in different styles, and both turned out beautifully. Check out his portfolio, the work speaks for itself.The shop itself is clean, comfortable and constantly evolving. Every time I drop by for an appointment something is new - art, walls changing color, it has a personality of it's own. Just watch out for the poorly placed telephone pole when you're pulling into the lot.
