I knew for a while now what first tattoos I wanted and I came in after work one Saturday out of curiosity. I met Mike and he was helpful, kind, and knowledgable about the process. He gave me his opinions and suggestions about my ideas. The following Tuesday I just walked in after work and he was available (lucky me) right then to discuss my new thoughts. 10-15 minutes later I walked out of the shop with my two new tattoos! My husband and I came in to get tattoos while we were on vacation. Customer service was really good - however, my husband got a trumpet tattoo that was petty good (the trumpet valves however were not connected), and my cross tattoo has double lines, a blow-out, and it is not symetrical eventhough the stencil was symetrical. This was my second tattoo experience, and I thought I had done adequate research seeing as my first tattoo I had to get lazer removed because of the poor quality. Additionally, the "drawings" of our tattoos were not shared with us ahead of time, and when I saw it - it look like something she had pulled out of a book that didn't take much thought or effort. My husband's trumpet drawing was not cosmetically correct and he had to have her edit it twice to make it accurate.I'm not sure if fine-line black and grey just isn't the shop's best style or what but I am super disapointed and embarassed of this thing on my body. Today I have an appointment with a tattoo artist in the area to get the lines more symetrical and essentially fix it. The first words out of his mouth when I set up the appointment after looking at it for 2 seconds was, "yep - unfortunately you got a bad tattoo." I'm hoping the wearing of bracelets around my wrist can end today since he is a well known artist in my area who I am confident can fix this tattoo I have. Full disclosure… I am not from Nashville and I am a professional tattooer myself. When I was in Nashville about seven years ago I visited about 5 different tattoo shops before getting tattooed at Music City. From the perspective of a collector they run one of the most professional and clean looking shops in the city. From the perspective of a tattooer I got one of the best tattoos I've ever gotten from this shop. Mike pays a lot of attention to his drawings and spends a lot of time making sure that his work is what it supposed to be. Got a little block of text on my inner arm, nothing elaborate or intricate, but I was super happy with my experience. I was accommodated fairly quickly, laura was professional and patient when I was fussy about placement, she was quick but very thorough. I am regularly complimented on my tattoo, people saying how it looks "too perfect" to be real, how nice the lettering is. Etc. I got two of my six tattoos here and those are the only tattoos I ever had problems with. My friend and I got matching music notes, one by Laura and one by mike, using the same stencil and they look completely different. My other one did not heal properly so I asked mike to touch it up and he completely missed the spots he was supposed to fill in making it look even worse than before and he also connected the dot of an 'i' to the letter. He talks too much and doesn't pay attention. And they wrap the tattoos in Saran Wrap which is disgusting and not appropriate for the healing process. Read Less

So. I found myself wanting to finish a tattoo I had started last year. But...It required text.I was a little scared.I started searching for artists. I asked friends to search for artists. I asked my fellow Yelpers for recommendations of artists....Ya see, I wasn't going to go to just anyone; I needed someone GREAT.After an exhaustive search, and some superb referrals, I found an artist...finally.I emailed Chris Boyle, and learned due to the closing of East Side Iron, he has moved over to Music City Tattoo on Music Row. Since MCT is undergoing a website revamp (and he's fairly new to this team), he referred me to his Instagram profile to check out his work. I loved it.We conversed a bit through email, and agreed to meet at the shop on a late Friday afternoon to discuss my design further. Lucky for me, no charge for a consultation.I was greeted warmly by several members of the staff (or perhaps the owners?) as I walked through the front door. Chris immediately came out to meet me. We discussed my design, and he carefully examined the existing work I had. He then made some great recommendations to make my addition look better and last longer. I had a gazillion questions, of course, and he took the time to answer each one diligently, stating more than once, "There are never too many questions.". Simply put, this guy has a lot of insight, and it is evident he cares deeply about his craft.I was not expecting to have the work completed that evening since the shop closes at 7PM, and the work I wanted done was estimated at 1.5 hours. But, Chris said in so many words, "I'm good. Let's do this!". So we did.I ran out to grab some sugar inducing food and beverage items while he prepped. Upon my return, he took an immense amount of care to make sure all was just right before we started. Since I had not had such an extensive piece done before, he took time to explain to me how he would go about applying the ink, and advised to please let him know whenever I needed a break.We then made a few, minor design changes, several tries at the stencil, and a little freehand drawing.... Voilà! It was perfect.Three hours later, with only one short restroom break, my piece was complete, and I was elated. Even though it was late, and well past closing time, Chris (again) took the time to make sure I was comfortable with aftercare, and to answer any additional questions I had.Throughout the entire process, I never felt rushed or disregarded in any way, and I truly enjoyed conversing with Chris. Laura and Mike are the best!Laura has been doing my tattoos since 2008, when I lived in New York and would plan trips to visit my family in Nashville AROUND our sessions. Her color work is as fantastic as it gets, but her artistry is even more impressive. I have a certain style of line-work that I like for all of my tattoos, and she has the uncanny ability to match just my style, even before she'd ever tattooed me or seen any of my pieces! She will be doing an Americana-style classic piece and turn around and draw the more intricate, feminine lines I prefer without any hint of the previous style's influence.If you're in Nashville (or not!) and looking for professional artists, go to Music City. They both have been tattooing for many MANY years and have so much experience under their belt, so you never feel like you're their "first" anything. Mike and Laura have done a combined 14 hours of work on me and I will be back for more. These two are the real deal with resumes that list established names in the industry like Eric Inksmith and Paul Rogers. They properly consult every client, and break their backs to do quality work everytime. The shop is clean and they are incredibly friendly, it's rare to walk in a tattoo shop and not be made to feel on edge but Mike and Laura do a great job of making the client comfortable and making their tattoos amazing. I went in last week after visiting a few other tattoo shops in town and not being thrilled with any of them. A friend recommended Laura at Music City Tattoo so I went to talk to her about what I wanted. She was super nice and understood what I was going for and offered a few suggestions of her own. She's been in the field for many years so I trusted her expertise. She happened to have availability the next day, so I went back about 24 hours later and she had two versions drawn up, I picked the one I liked, and she got to work. My tattoo took about three hours and she was great about letting me take breaks when I needed to catch my breath. I was so impressed by the whole experience and I'm thrilled with my tattoo. It's beautiful, the colors are vivid, and it fits with the curve of my body, it doesn't look like it was just stuck on me. I can't say enough good things about my experience at Music City Tattoo!! if you want a completely amazing tattoo experience (all around) definitely go check out music city tattoo on 16th avenue south in nashville and talk to mike and lauramike worked on and brightened up my chest piece and laura crafted beautiful cherry blossoms and chrysanthemums covering both my left and right sides. they apply incredibly bright colors on your skin when they tattoo you, i have been tattooed by artists from all over the U.S. and my experience at music city tattoo has been the best one yet. i will always go back. mike and laura are not only amazing tattoo artists but also amazing people who make you feel at ease and have become good friends.i can't wait to go back and start my next tattoo project.
