FYI I went to this place 9/3/17 and it was now called blu gorilla full on custom. This was the first tattoo I've ever gotten, I was beyond nervous. I'd even put a deposit down at another shop but felt intimidated by the staff so I chickened out. I called day of and made an appointment, the staff were fantastic. Incredibly welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. They made me feel at ease and did an amazing job with my tattoo. Today I received a horseshoe crab custom tattoo from Brad, and the whole visit was wonderful. I'm from Ohio, but the guys made it easy to schedule, book, and get my tattoo. My friend and I were in town for vacation and wanted to get tattoos. We both have numerous tattoos. I had nick for my artist and I wanted a Pineapple tattoo. I have to say that he was not only a great artist but extremely personable and made sure I was comfortable. I got it on my ankle and in blue. It looks amazing and I am more than happy with the outcome. I recommend nick and anyone in that shop. They were all really comforting and pleasant to be around which is not usual in a tattoo shop. Scheduled an appointment and the artist didn't show up until half an hour later. We had someone ahead of us for the same artist, who was waiting on the guy to show up. So he wasn't simply late, he was HELLA late. Very unprofessional. They also never returned our emails. This was scheduled over a week in advance. Nick exceeded my expectations!! I emailed what I wanted, got an appt, came in on that date, everything was ready, I even asked to add a last minute detail (which took all of 5 min to add--and it looked AWESOME) some time later, and I had a beautiful Jedi White Rabbit that was unique, and special. Nick got mad kudos and hugs that day. Plus he's very nice, and makes you feel super comfortable. He takes his time, makes sure everything is right, and doesn't do ANYTHING you're not comfortable with (no surprise added extras) I chose him specifically for his color work, and got so much more in return. My piece ABSOLUTELY rocks!! Plus the front desk staff was really nice, made sure I was waited on and all that good stuff. Everyone there is really super nice!!! The artist I was dealing with was rude and pushy about the design of my tattoo. He then insisted that I lie on the medical history form in order to receive a tattoo. I'd suggest that artists read up on common medical conditions before they make snide comments about someone's ability to get inked. I'm rather relieved that I left empty handed because I did not trust my artist at all. Read Less

I got my first tattoo here. I wanted to get it done in Charleston where I used to live and I heard that Blu Gorilla was the place to go so I looked up their artists and found Raymond. When I called to make an appointment with him they said he was at Pepper Shade on Sundays. Anyway, I emailed the artist a few examples of what I was looking for and didn't hear back, 2 weeks later a day before my appointment I received a really friendly call to confirm my appointment and asked about my email. The guy I spoke to on the phone was very nice and made sure the artist saw my email. The next day I went to my appointment early to discuss artwork with Raymond when he told my he doesn't freehand... luckily he was able to take from the examples I had sent and draw something up. I walked away with an awesome tattoo. Raymond also dealt with my group of 10 friends who had just came from brunch (and a few cravats of mimosas deep). He was very understanding of the 5, loud, friends that were in the room with me and was able to keep a steady hand. I have been to quite a few tattoo shops around charleston area, and ended up swing by here because of all the good things I heard. And I didn't hear wrong, I was welcomed when I came in the door by the staff and started talking to view of the artist about the idea I had in my head. When it came down to the tattoo process they made sure I was comfortable and triple checked location etc. 2 hours later I checked it out and it was better than I imagined it would have turned out! So far this is the best looking and best experience tattoo session I've had. If your looking for a friendly very professional shop this is hands down who I recommend. I hate to give one star because everyone I dealt with there was nice enough. The problem is the quality of tattoo I got was very poor. Granted I knew the tattoo artist Jefferson Monroe had only been tattooing for 5 years AND that he thought he had a broken hand, so those were two signs that things would not end all that great. Basically my tattoo ended up with splotchy, uneven coloring. Worse yet, in the area where the color is better saturated, it wasn't done properly because there's scar tissue. The skin is smooth and shiny like scar tissue. It's been about 2 months so I've given it plenty of time to heal up. The blending of the two main colors in the tattoo was also done poorly. Ironically Jeff specifically tells me that it doesn't look like even coloring at the time but once healed it will. As you can see from the picture, that's not the case. Here's a lesson that I learned the hard way, even though I knew better... NEVER CHEAT ON YOUR TATTOO GUY!!!! I have an amazing tattoo artist in the local area so next time someone offers to buy me a tattoo (only reason I got tattooed elsewhere), I'll be sure to pass unless they're willing to pay MY guy! :)Quality of tattoo is definitely 1 star, but friendly people there prompted me to add another star.
