words cannot describe how pleasant my experience was at upper hand tattoo studio. It was a Sunday where my friends and I decided to visit Charleston and out of a whim and the happiness of seeing each other again after this summer had ended gave us the idea to get friendship tattoos and our personalized tattoos. Now, because it was a whim we called 5+ tattoo parlors begging them to take our walk ins and most of them rejected us while others said they would call back but never did. When we called Mr. Dave the owner of upper hand he greeted us with a warm and friendly tone! although it was four of us Mr. Dave did not seem overwhelmed and took time and passion in designing our tattoos. He also made it a pleasant experience for 3/4 of us who were getting our very first tattoos. We are so so excited to come back and visit again. i would rate 0 stars but it won’t let me. i came in one night around 7 and they close at 9 we were the only ones in there and we waited for an hour and a half until we finally decided we would come back the next day because it was taking so long and the older man at the front was making rude comments on how the tattoo artist shouldn’t keep me waiting. so they gave me half my money back and kept the other half. the next day i decided that i didn’t want the tattoo i picked out and when i got there i apologized saying that i had changed my mind and that i would make another appointment since i probably wouldn’t be able to get my money back for the deposit. but the man at the front desk from yesterday told me that i had wasted there time and the artists time and that he didn’t even actually work there and he wouldn’t be able to do my tattoo next time. i said i was sorry at least 3 times when he kept telling me how i was wasting there time. i finally said sir i’m sorry i don’t know what you want me to do about it now. i can’t go back and change it. i can reschedule and appointment so i can think of something i actually want and he got up and walked away and they gave me some of my money back. we left and i plan on never returning Read Less

First time here and it was very clean and professional and I felt really comfortable getting my tattoo done here. My artist was very quick and made the process as least painful as possible, while still pulling off amazing lines and giving great detail. Best of both worlds! I came into the studio on a Monday afternoon and the whole way while I was on my way I felt ansty and nervous since my last two experiences with tattoo shops have been anything but pleasant. It's been almost six years and I really wanted something so I did my research and was referred by a friend to this shop. As soon as I walked in I felt the upbeat vibe and a nice clean smell. The friendly girl at the counter greeted me as soon as I walked in and told me she thought there w...as room for a walk in. Ashley took me after finishing her client she was already working on. She was very comforting with her friendly presence and personally I enjoyed having a female artist for the first time. Her and her coworkers chatting casually was so comedic that it took my attention off the pain of the tattoo and gave me something to fixate on. Drove in from Charlotte for work, my guy down here was sick and had to cancel. I found this Gem and they had a 2 hr opening and got me in for the last 2 hrs of business. Steve absolutely did a fantastic job on a custom add on to a previous tattoo that I had. I will definitely be back when I make it down. Steve did an incredible job blending the 2 and on top of that hand drew it straight to my arm and then tatted it up. Great personality and an amazing talent!! My husband got a tattoo from artist Ashley Henson at Upper Hand. He gave her a wing drawing he created and scheduled an appointment a week out. She took his drawing and made it even better. He wasn't sure he wanted shading, but she put shading in the drawing she did and it looked awesome! This tattoo had heavy line work and she killed it! She was very personable and professional.
