I've heard about this place for a few months from friends that have gotten their nose and cartilage pierced, so I decided to check it out. The name of the person who pierced my cartilage was Jenelle, and she was super helpful. I have to be honest, I was super nervous coming to a small piercing shop downtown, knowing absolutely nothing about piercings, however my experience was amazing! Just by seeing all the awards hung up on the wall I could tell this place was very professional. Jenelle was very helpful in the entire process; she helped me find the right jewelry, did a wonderful job piercing my cartilage, and was super friendly to us. I went here to get my second lobe piercing after getting the first one done at Claire's. It was a totally different experience! The store was a very nice and professional environment and the staff was so sweet and knowledgeable. They knew exactly what they were doing and walked us through every step. The piercing was quick and not very painful and after two days has not bled or swelled at all, unlike my piercing done at Claire's. Every time I come to this place the piercers are extremely rude and pretentious. As soon as I walked in the door (I came in for a change on jewelry) the male I believe his name Jeff said in a very condescending tone before I could even finish what I was saying "USE SANITIZER don't touch your ear!!!!" My ear is not a fresh piercing I got it done over a month ago, and he cut me off to demand that. So bad start to begin with. I told him I got my piercing at a place in NYC and he told me he worked there and how I should've gone to all of these other different places, etc etc. so then he tells me I can't have the jewelry I wanted because it would be too big on my Trageus piercing, which If that's your protocol that's fine. But if it's just his personal opinion that's not right and I should decide what I want and not him. After paying almost 60 it was 51 with tax, I am then sat down in the chair and he proceeds to recommend all the places I should've gone in ny. He had trouble getting the trageus piercing changed out and then clipped my snug w the pliers. He finally got in it, it did look nice but it took a min or two to get out. As I was leaving I said last night I think I might've scratched it in my sleep and he was like "Really??? Not to be disrespectful but that is something you definitely should've told your piercer before they changed your jewelry". I didn't get a thank you out the door or anything. I am done coming to this place that lacks customer service and hospitality when they charge a fortune for their rates. I miss the old MOLA, when laura ran it and made sure to be as kind and helpfull as possible. I've held off writing a review for several years for several reasons, but I feel like the last straw has been pulled. This location has a reputation for not being the friendliest-wether it's through the piercing community or through word of mouth, I have never heard good reviews in terms of customer service. Unfortunately it is the only shop downtown that's certified, licensed, and clean so most of us have no other option. However, that does not excuse the lack of friendly care and customer service from the staff. When I say I have never had a friendly experience I mean it. I've been living in Charleston for over 12 years and the only staff that's been friendly have been in the West Ashley location (which thank you, it means MORE than you know). Im not a licensed piercer and I am no expert but I do know a thing or two more than someone who is completely inexperienced in getting pierced, so please give us maybe just .01% credit and ALLOW US to ask questions instead of IMMEDIATELY talking down to us. Was headed there today to get a room piercing and changed my mind after first walking in and immediately getting a foul look and tone. I'm over it. Front desk girl was incredibly rude to my sister. We understand the rules of not removing piercings and such because of germs but when a ball falls off We're gonna put it back and we did not appreciate the girl excessively yelling at us to not touching it and made us take the whole piercing out. Incredibly rude staff. Nobody introduced themselves. The piercer messed up piercing my friend's nose. The piercing went in crooked the first time so he had to re-pierce her nose. Went there for a friends piercing. We thought Brian was delightful, but Jeff was strange. Went back for a piercing myself and Jeff was terribly rude. Refused to take my out of state ID (I'm 24), and told me "nothing you can do will convince me this is real." While I understand the need to be sure that piercing establishments are practicing safely, he was an absolute asshole honestly. Jeff pierced my nostril like the pro that he is. I've had a few piercings done, and though they were long ago, I remember the sketchiness of the places...actually, I'll never forget thanks to the "shitty jewelry tattoo" I have in my cartilage that will never go away.  Museum of Living Arts was totally the opposite - clean, professional, relaxed. Dare I say upscale? If there's such a thing as an upscale piercing place, this has to be it.The pricing can be a little tricky to understand at first, but I read some yelp reviews (thanks Yelpers!) that prepped me.  I actually had to go back a couple of times afterward - I was anxious to get my jewelry changed out, but Jeff didn't think it was healed enough and kept telling me to come back. It was for my own good.  Each time he was friendly and patient.I'm sad to say the last time I went in was about 6 months later to take out my piercing for good...it just kept getting snagged on everything.  That's not the fault of MoLA though, and Rebekah was super nice about taking it out and made me feel that I'm welcome to come back anytime I want to explore another piercing. So professional and clean and knowledgeable. I went to get both of my nipples pierced for their Friday the 13th special and Michael was great. I was worried dealing with a man doing my nipple piercings, but his professionalism put me at ease, even with a line of people out the door. I did have some issues with the jewelry being ill-fitting, but Janelle and Laura made sure to get everything fixed for me, free of charge. I thought I was being a nuisance, but Janelle made sure that I felt validated in my concerns and was helped fit me with jewelry that fits me perfectly, now. Thank you, Janelle! Their jewelry is beautiful here and super unique (walrus tusk hangers?!). They'll even do custom orders for you in the correct gauge and color. I just have basic piercing jewelry right, now but I'll definitely be back to order new jewelry later on. I love this place! They are very helpful and patient. They explain everything before they do it and take their time. They do not rush you out the door---they give you all the time you need. They do not just do a piercing to make a quick buck. They encourage you to come in and follow up to have your piercing checked for proper healing. I had my daith done around Christmas time but I did not have a good reaction. They suggested I take it out and let it heal. I came back and they decided my other ear seemed to be better for this type of piercing and it is doing really well. Had two helix piercings done in my right ear. The staff was ok, but not very informative or polite. In total the piercings cost $175 plus a $20 tip I gave. I thought the price was outrageous, and the staff incompetent. I have never had any issues with piercings, as I have two dermals, my belly, several ear piercings, and nose pierced and they healed fine. However the cartilage in my ear did not heal well at all, which I believe is due to how it was pierced. The girl seemed the have trouble the entire time. There are plenty of better places with lower prices to have your piercings done.Read Less

I took my seventeen year old here to get her cartilage pierced and her second holes.  This place is extremely professional.  I didn't catch the name of the girl who works up front, handling the check in process and signing of the release forms, but she was so friendly and knowledgeable, she immediately puts you at ease. Jeff handled the piercing portion, he definitely knows his stuff, he was very thorough and extremely sanitary.  He goes about it in a very medical type way, as if he were a doctor, if your going to have someone poking holes in your body he's the guy you want doing it. The girls were great and informative. Said I would receive an email re: care of my piercing within 48 hours. 2 weeks and multiple emails later, one of which stated "I did that thing where I thought I replied hours ago but never hit send, sorry" and still no aftercare email. Worst of all, my piercing is so crooked and their solution was for me to come have it re-done for free. I live 800 miles away. Felt scammed when I finally received an itemized receipt as well. I have to say this place is amazing! The staff is super nice and knowledgeable! The woman who Peirced my ears and helix did an amazing job and was great with all my questions and concerns! I love this shop!! I've been pierced a dozen times! I REALLY dig that they carry such a large selection of real gold and I can custom order jewelry!  It's well lit and everything is displayed well. The staff are super nice and knowledgeable, they answered all my questions.
