I was tattooed by Jocelyn Berg, tattooing 3.5 yrs. I wanted to give an honest review here to avoid anyone else leaving disappointed. I had a previous underwater thigh piece and asked for some add ons on the bottom (shells, coral, starfish, etc.) When I got home, I noticed that quite a few lines are crooked in the fish we added, and in the seaweed as well. I think the green shading in the seaweed looks very beginner, and I asked that no black outline be used, because nothing else had black outline. I trusted her expertise, and i think it make it look much darker than I wanted, and not matching to the rest of the bright art. The lines are thick and crooked as well. The starfish at the bottom also had crooked lines and a bit of an odd shape. The red coral we started is very amateur, with crooked lines. And the black anemone will not match because she again did it in black, and the ones I have are in purple.I am happy that all of the colors she added are light (minus the outline), and that most of the lines are very thin and can be adjusted by a more experienced/talented artist to complete my thigh piece... I chose her because the photos on her profile are very impressive, though I am sure now that most are not her work, based on the turn out of my simple requested piece.Bottom line, this addon cost me $320 and I am unhappy with the outcome. I have 7 other tattoos, 3 are very big and I will certainly find someone more talented next time. Read Less

Overall I had a good experience here! The receptionist was really friendly and even helped me do a bit of research for a font for my tattoo. Adrien was very accommodating and took me as a last minute walk in close to closing time and put up with all of my pickiness and requests, exceededing my expectations! On top of that the other tattoo artists I talked to were really friendly and the shop was very clean with a cool but not intimidating atmosphere. Was skeptical trying to find a solid tattoo artist in the Charleston area, when I have had all previous work done by friends out of state. Josè took the time to guide me in the right direction as to what I wanted, and the right design for where I wanted the work done. He was patient and professional, and came out with an awesome design. When it came to the detail and depth of the actual work done and the finished product, I was truly impressed by the craftsmanship. Went to Iron Lotus due to all the great reviews. It was a walk in tattoo..a flamingo. It was my bachelorette weekend and we wanted to commemorate the trip. The front desk girl (apologies for not knowing her name) was super nice, and extremely helpful. Jose was the artist that did my tattoo. First thing, this was my ninth tattoo. He never shaved the area. He was sitting while placing the stencil. Never got up to make sure it was straight..I had to walk over to another artist for her to check. During the tattoo he asked what color and ostriches legs were..I was getting a flamingo. I don't think it would have been too much to ask for him to have at least known what he was tattooing. I also asked for light pink shading at the bottom of the flamingos belly..when i looked at my tattoo the entire flamingo was pink..it's like he didn't listen, or care. Aside from all of that..this piece hurt like no other. I have a pretty high pain tolerance but this was sore for days. After removing the plastic wrap (that he didn't even secure on my leg) I saw every single needle stroke. And upon healing a decent amount of color came out. When we travel my wife and I like to get tattoos in the city we are visiting. On this occasion I decided to get the SC state symbol, Palmetto tree and crescent. I was born in SC so I thought it would be a nice memento. We Yelped Iron Lotus and read their outstanding reviews so we decided to visit. From the moment we walked in the staff was very nice and helpful. The owner was there and was also very friendly and inviting. My last vacation tattoo experience, in another city, I had a bad experience and had to have my tattoo re-done upon returning to Texas. Needless to say I was a little nervous this time around. My tattoo artist was Adrien Moreau and even though I wanted a seemingly simple tattoo I was still uneasy. He was very patient, very nice and reassuring. My two friends and I went to Iron Lotus yesterday to get Star Wars tattoos! We each wanted something a little different, but wanted all three to be cohesive, and they were all medium to large sized tattoos (ranging from 2-4 hours each). The kicker is that we had very little reference material and no appointment. I know... we suck. But we figured we would see if they had room for three walk-ins, and if not, oh well. Not only did they manage to design all three exactly how we h...ad imagined, they stayed late to make sure all three of us had finished pieces we loved. The shop itself is beautiful! It's huge, clean, and comfortable. From when we first walked in, to when we left hours later, we felt welcomed and like valued customers, even without appointments. I went to get my first tattoo on Saturday with my daughters. We were getting matching tattoos and had a few ideas. Carlos talked with us and helped us decide which we preferred and what would look best. He made me very comfortable and talked to me and my daughters and we all had a lot of laughs. My wife and I were down for our anniversary and wanted to get an anniversary tattoo. We went in and we're firstly impressed with the size of the shop but most importantly the put togetherness and cleanliness of it. Chris has been working on a sleeve for me for about six weeks now and he is not only an excellent artist he is a great guy as well. He has been working on my forearm the last three times so he decided to work on an eleven year old memorial tattoo on my upper arm. My expectation was that he would just brighten it up, boy was I wrong it looks better than the original by far, he gave it depth and better color and shading. I've probably got three more sessions before it's done and then I will post some pics but so far I am extremely excited about what he has done so far, exceeding my expectations by a mile. I wish I had found him when I got my first tattoo but I am glad he is doing my sleeve and any others I get from this point on. I had an amazing experience getting my first tattoo here! I had a great time getting tattooed by Hutch. I came in without an appointment, told him what I wanted, he drew it up and started tattooing! He was really awesome to talk to during the process. I vocalized quite a few times how nervous I was but he reassured me that I was in good hands. Hutch is a great guy and I'm really happy with the tattoo. This would have been a 5 star rating but it lost a star on the aftercare instructions. I've been mostly relying on the Internet for the aftercare because he didn't tell me a lot of instructions. All I got was a little business card with a few points on it and what he told me (which was the same as the card). With that aside it was a great experience. The place was clean and private. Dave did my tattoo. I gave him a generic idea of a nerdy tattoo and he came back with two separate outline ideas both more nerdy and felt personalized to me. I went to the iron lotus for the first time this past weekend and after I read through all the reviews on google which were all amazing for all of the artists.I decided on using Chris because his portfolio included more of the art I was looking for. We scheduled a time and he took a small idea that i had come up with and drew up an amazing customized tattoo. We went to work on my tattoo and his line work was incredible! I have had so many compliments and requests for busi...ness cards it's crazy... Chris was super polite professional and everything was so clean. Holly who worked the front desk was very helpful and so very nice. What impressed me the most was when the shop got close to closing at 9 Chris really wanted to finish and to my surprise the owner of the shop (dave) offered to stay late so he could get it done and said no rush. I go back soon for color/shading and am so excited to see the end product. I have recommended this shop to numerous friends and coworkers who are totally impressed. I'm a difficult client, I understand this - clean shop, respectful staff, talented artists - in that order are what I look for in a tattoo shop. Iron Lotus got five stars in all these categories. I had been looking for over 5 years (in NC and SC) for an artist to take on the idea I had for a geometric back piece. Not many artists will do (much less enjoy) such a detail oriented, tedious request. Dave jumped at the idea, did some research, and sketched my idea into print better than I could have ever imagined. He never rushed the process, was open to my suggestions, and was flexible with my schedule. His attention to detail was amazing. Oh yeah, he did the entire project in dot work : 15+ hours of table time, not one solid line - amazing. I absolutely love iron lotus and Brandon Hudson. My path started 3 years ago at iron lotus with Dave. After a lot of life experiences and things going on at the time...I ended up getting a few more done by other artists and loved the connection I made with Brandon. All of my other pieces have been done by Brandon and we have had a great experience through the journey being able to talk and bond. Brandon is such a laid back guy who has a great artistic eye and since I like custom work....he has nailed every single vision I've had and them some. I let him have creative control of my pieces...and each one from the smallest to a back piece that took 2 sessions, he has made it a very comfortable experience and always exceeded my expectations. First off, I love the inside of this place. Most tattoo shops I've walked into seem overcrowded with artwork to choose from and just, eye boggling. When you walk inside here, the place is open and actually quite relaxing and intriguing. My husband came here to get his first and second tattoo (he only has 2). And he loves them. He told them that the colors or size they wanted was going to create a faded or blotchy tattoo in the near future.  Each client walked away to find a different place they know would do the tattoo.  Now, this isn't bad at all in my opinion and it's because this place and the artists really stand behind what they do.  They're trained to know what a bad tattoo is going to look like when you bring them the idea for it.  He said there are places in Charleston that will tattoo anyone with anything they want and all that means is that the clients are going to have a shitty tattoo in the future that they'll either be unhappy with or will have to fix someday.  I really respected that.  The shop minimum is $60, so even if you want a dot that's how much you'll pay here.  The artists will even show you versions of your tattoo based on prices--so they'll show you a $100 version, a $120 version, etc...for example.  Very reasonable!  This is the kind of place you find and keep coming back to whenever you want a tattoo, even if you move away!  A friend of mine flys out to Vegas everytime he wants to get work done because the only artist he'll work with lives out there.  The Iron Lotus is this kind of place!  You'll find your "for life" artist here! So hugely happy with my experience at iron lotus today!! My roommate and I went in this afternoon as walk-ins after trying to get in to a bunch of places all week. We were both getting pretty small pieces... Him for the first time... Both of us are so thrilled with the outcomes! I went to Iron Lotus today (7-22-2013) as a walk in and was very pleased with my experience. When I walked in nobody was at the counter but was greeted by an artist with in a minute. I told him what I wanted and had it drawn up with in 15-20 mins. The place is every clean. All the artists were very nice and respectful from what I heard from their conversations. I have traveled the world in the Marine Corp. and have gotten tattooed in many shops. When coming to Charleston I researched 5 shops based on portfolios, info on the internet and visits to the shops. 3 of the shops I went to out of the Charleston area seemed a bit uninterested in helping me and 1 of those 3 smelled of cigarette smoke. I went to the next 2, one that had been voted the best and the other had great reviews. I don't know how the 1 shop got voted the best. It was full of bad attitude, was loud, and not very clean. The last one I went to I got greeted by a very inviting young lady at the counter and after explaining what I was wanting she promptly suggested the best artist for the job. He drew my tattoo in a reasonable amount of time and got started tattooing. The places was nicer than any tattoo shop I have ever been, plus the service to match. Let me save you some time. I'm living here for the summer and have only heard of two tattoo parlors worth walking into, so I figured I'd check them both out. I gave one a phone call and spoke to a very rude artist who laughed at the idea of the tattoo I wanted to get and said it wasn't possible. REALLY?!? Forget that.
