Providence Tattoo has a really beautiful, cool, clean space on Wickenden. The artists do great work but I have gone into Providence Tattoo on multiple occasions for myself and with others and have experienced nothing but rudeness. If they don't completely ignore you when you walk in, they make you feel like you're bothering them if you inquire about tattoos. Every time I've been there, they have made me or whoever was going to get the tattoo feel inferior and frankly, stupid for asking questions. Again, they do great work and some of the artists are very nice but every time I've gone in there, one of the artists or staff have been incredibly rude. I feel compelled to write today about my experience with Taylor, a masterful tattoo artist, at Providence Tattoo on Wickenden Street in Providence. After 15 years of looking through thousands of potential images for my first tattoo, I finally found the perfect one for me last week. So, I walked into PT on Wickenden last Friday to consult with someone there. I already did my research on the salon, and I've seen first-hand the great work that the artists there produce, so I ...was sure that PT was the place for me. Fortunately, when I walked into the salon, Taylor greeted me in a very calm and cordial manner. As a tattoo virgin, he greeted me exactly as I needed. I showed him the image that I wanted on my forearm, and I told him that I was a tattoo virgin. He immediately showed great care and investment in my concerns, and then he thoroughly answered every one of my questions. I was so taken with his professionalism that I made an appointment with him for the following day. My experience the next day with him was very comfortable, humorous, and, again, shrouded in care and professionalism. He's a consummate professional and a masterful artist. I was so thrilled by the outcome of my tattoo that I circulated pictures of it to everyone in my family and larger network of friends and colleagues. I was inundated with messages about what a wonderful job Taylor had done on my arm. He very thoughtfully and carefully produced a fantastically-detailed, perfectly-positioned, and overall marvelous design. The mood and effect of his composition is an exquisite work of art. Went to Atwells Ave. location. It was years since my last tattoo and I was ready to get my new design which held a lot of personal meaning. Jon is the artist that worked with me. It was a relatively simple tattoo and he still took time work with me on design, size, placement and color. I felt the same personal attention as someone might get with his more intricate pieces. Jon is a really great guy with an excellent personality. If someone is very anxious about getting a tattoo, I am certain his excellent manner, professionalism and personality would ease any nerves. Went to the Wickeden Street location with my girlfriend and they didn't have an opening. The guy working called the Atwells Ave location and got us in there instead. Nick was my artist and did a fantastic job on a sparrow on my neck. Took him only 45 minutes to complete and it looks great. Prices are pretty reasonable, but my girlfriend only wanted a "penny sized tattoo" and it was going to cost her $70 so she declined getting it. Only drawback from the shop. Read Less

Peter gave me a real sweet tattoo on Saturday.  It is a pretty big piece, stretching across the top of my thigh to tender inner leg.  It felt as terrible as it is supposed to and Peter was kind and muppety.  The lines are very precise, the colors vibrant, and he worked quickly.They were playing The Smiths the whole time which I hate more than foam soap and mosquitoes combined - but My Gother Half was tattooed by Peter right after I was and he enjoyed all of that somber garbage while he got more creepy pagan doodles on his arm.While waiting, I was able to talk an 18 year old out of getting a neck tattoo so she can save her bad decisions for dating drummers or wearing shoes without arch support.Deposit is $50, they take credit cards.  Tidy little shop. Whilst visiting Providence from the UK I wanted to get a Lovecraftian tattoo whilst I was in Lovecraft's city. A booking was taken for the next day after inquiring. Everyone was professional, friendly and really down to earth. I discussed what I wanted with Jon who would be my artist, and it took about 30 minutes to get a design drawn up, and a further hour to complete. This shop is awesome. Peter Toatley is awesome. I'm meticulous about things when it comes to cleaning, so I was impressed by the organization and cleanliness of this place. I walked in for the first time where Peter immediately greeted me, even though he was in the middle of consulting another customer. He listened to my tattoo idea and set me up for an appointment the very next day. Peter was very professional; he shook hands with me each time I came in and I appreciated his overall mannerisms. Peter was so awesome! *disclaimer* This was my first tattoo, but the experience was nothing short of perfect. I walked in and made an appointment with Peter. Since I already had a design, I sent Peter my work ahead of time. He seemed to put a lot of thought into how to make my line design as perfect as possible. He didn't settle for less-than-perfect, and gave me great suggestions for placements to make it look the best on my body. I've been tattooed by the owner, Dennis, lots of times since the shop opened. All of my tattoos are perfect, bright and bold, and I receive compliments on them literally almost everyday. The whole staff is very talented and professional, both shop locations are beautiful and extremely well put together. First off I am 2 hours away from my tattoo artist that I have always gone to. I decided I didn't want to drive that far. I called providence tattoo and spoke with mike. He was very nice and helpful. Later that afternoon I went to the shop and spoke with Rick. I discussed with him what I wanted and he was very professional and drew up what I wanted for my sisters memorial tattoo. I got my first tattoo here on my shoulder. Being that it was my first time I was shocked at how expensive the tattoo was, but over a year later I do not regret getting here. My tattoo looks beautiful, and they even told me I could get free touch ups. I can not remember the guy that tattooed me but he was amazing. Since I am black I was worried that pink would not show up on my skin well, and lucky for me he was the same skin tone with a pink/ red tattoo fill. Popped in here for a small back piece, and I was happy to find they had availability for a walk-in. The first thing I noticed was the great flash on the walls. I've been in several tattoo shops, but few of them had the great quality flash that I saw here. In fact, if I hadn't already come with an idea in mind, I just might've picked something off of the wall. Everyone was super professional and friendly, a big departure from some of the "too cool" attitudes I've run into in a lot of other shops. My quote was pretty reasonable given the work involved, so no real complaints there. Andy had me fill out the paperwork, but when I came back a few hours later, he was busy and told me Peter would be inking my tattoo (not a big deal as I'd seen Peter do some great work when I first walked in). Peter was really cool helping me get all set up (I have long hair so it was a bit of a trial tying it up away from my neck but he helped me figure it out), and took pride in his work. He replaced the stencil several times until he was sure the symbol was perfectly straight before beginning, which I appreciated. As for the actual tattoo process, he was chill whenever I had to readjust or lift my head up for a break. If I'm ever back in Providence, I'll definitely come here for another tattoo! Read Less

First review on yelp, first tattoo as well. Very pleased with my experience at providence tattoo. My artist was Andy, super nice young guy. Very helpful and came up with a great design based off of my ideas. We did the piece in one sitting, but he was courteous to intermittently ask if I needed breaks. When we took a break between line work and shading he even went out of his way to the store next door and bought me a water and protein bar. Overall the piece came out great. Andy is a very talented artist, especially at the traditional style/lady heads. If I decide on another I will definitely come back and ask for Andy. Price is reasonable especially for the outcome, and they are very straight forward with pricing so you're not surprised at the end. It was slushy and snowy and just an overall disgusting Saturday afternoon when I popped in Providence Tattoo. I have around 10-12 tattoos and have never walked into a shop without an appointment; not being prepared stresses me out, but I just decided to take a chance and stop by. I was greeted by two lovely gentlemen, Peter and Ricky. There was availability for a walk in and I got set up with Peter as my artist. He traced, tweaked, helped me play with sizing/placement, and around 20 minutes after I entered the shop, I was on the table. Peter did a wonderful job not only with the tattoo itself (which came out great) but his temperament was very calm and refreshing (couldn't be sweeter, and very easy to work with). Being on the table for the better part of two hours naturally I overheard conversations, and it was just nice to hear all the artists getting along and treating each other like a family- that's the kind of shop I want to work with. I have collected pieces from many different artists around New England, but I will most definitely come back to Providence Tattoo. They are a group of talented people who are extremely pleasant to be around. Sidebar: I think this would be a good shop for someone getting their first tattoo or someone who's very nervous about a specific area. PT is definitely the most calming shop I've been to, I mean as calming as a tattoo shop can be. I had a great experience at Providence Tattoo, and I will definitely come here again for more work. I called in advance and spoke to a very informative, friendly woman who helped me figure out the perfect artist for me. Since I was going for something relatively simple and small, she assured me than any of the artists would be able to meet my needs, but recommended Mariah based on her feminine touch. I arrived a tad early for my appointment, but was taken right in and asked to fill out some forms while my tattoo was traced. I brought a buddy with me, but the wasn't allowed to come behind the counter with me to watch everything go down, which was a bit of a bummer but totally understandable. My teensy tatt was inked on me forever in less than 15 minutes, and I couldn't love it more. We even discussed doing corrective work on an older piece I have, and I will happily return to Mariah again when I am ready to have that done. Parking can be tricky, as it's just off Thayer Street, but the space is very nice, clean and comfortable. There's a minimum $60 charge per tattoo, no matter how small. It seems fair to me considering the level of professionalism and care. Read Less

I waited for decades...Then...I researched artists until I found Mariah!3 long (but so worth it) sittings and my first tattoo is more than I could have imagined! I went in with a partial vision and illustration that needed customizing. Mariah was amazing every step of the way. Personable, calming, and so talented! The shop is clean and has great ambiance. One of the downsides to working with older teens is that I see a lot of really terrible tattoos everyday. Shaky, blurred, misspelled tattoos that make me question the sanity of the people who consented to getting them. However, what's the point of being young if you can't make a few mistakes that evolve into learning opportunities? If there was a socially acceptable way to sit my charges down and have some sort of "don't get ink in the back of some dude's van just because he'll only charge you a pack of cigarettes" intervention, my lecture would end with the following: if you get another tattoo, go find Dennis at Providence Tattoo and let him do his magic. So far I've sent two of my friends to PT to get ink from Dennis after he did some work for me in the winter of last year and they've been suitably wowed as well. My tattoo is beautifully colored, applied and looks almost nothing like the idea I originally brought to Dennis. After he explained to me that the illustration I brought in would look awkward as a tattoo he drew up a version of it that worked and I've never regretted going with his suggestions since getting it. Even my conservative Portuguese grandmother, who despises most body art, had to admit it was gorgeous when she saw it. I haven't gone to the other artists who work there, but after poking around on their website I can at least say their work looks pretty incredible too. PT has a nice facility, ridiculously clean work spaces and a decent central location in the college hill area, so it's easy to get to. As far as money goes, for the quality of work you'll get Dennis will charge you a fair price and while there might be *cheaper* tattoo artists around consider this: if you can reasonably expect that your tattoo is going to last you the rest of your life, do you really want to pay less for it than you would for a handbag or a pair of sneakers? A tattoo should be considered an investment and I can promise you that taking your business to Providence Tattoo would be a worthwhile one. Read Less
