My experience was absolutely perfect, I highly recommend them! I can’t say enough good. I got a cover up tattoo from Robbie around a year and a half ago, and he is amazing! I attached the before and after comparison photo too. We corresponded through email many times before the session, as he was so considerate and made sure that every last detail was perfect. After much deliberation and research, I chose to go to Gypsy for my first tattoo at a Pittsburgh shop (recently moved from an hour east of Pittsburgh).  Kate was highly recommended by one of the bartenders at Hop Farm (props to them too, because they rock as well).  As is typical with scheduling a tattoo, they scheduled me about 6 weeks out.  Nothing I was surprised by.  Well, it was worth the wait.  Kate did an excellent job!  She spent a lot of time with me discussing fonts and placement.  It was more of a collaboration, which I very much appreciated.  She worked quick, efficiently, with good attention to detail.  Her lines were spot on.  The other artist in the shop was also friendly.  I felt comfortable and at ease being in the shop.  The other artist, Laura, I believe, had just completed a woman's first ever tattoo while I was there.  It was the cutest thing, and matched the girl's personality perfectly.  As for the shop itself, its clean, well maintained, and the tattoo areas are very private.  Oh, and to the best of my knowledge, they have a flat rate per hour ($120 - or at least that's what I was told when I scheduled).  I'm assuming, though, that doesn't include extras, intricate artwork, or new drawings and changes.  So, don't quote me on the pricing.  I can say that Kate's final price fit perfectly into my budget, and stuck to what I was quoted when I scheduled.  Thanks for doing such great work Kate!  I will be back. This was a great experience all around for me. I should mention that this was my first tattoo. Michelle made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the process, including an extensive walk through of the process beforehand. Her parlor was immaculate, more akin to a spa or salon than my preconceived notions of what a tattoo parlor looks like. Absolutely terrible communication skills. I have called many times and sent many emails and could not get a hold of anyone. I even went down to the shop (during hours) and it was closed. Does this place just not want clients? After weeks of trying to get a hold of someone (my mistake-- if it takes that long, just go somewhere else. I was just into their work and really wanted to get my tattoos done here.) Josh finally responded to emails apologizing for not seeing them. Ok. Whatever. I gave him some of my days off coming up but he said, "Oh that won't work. Our artist are sometimes booked weeks, MONTHS in advance!" This is pretty normal for tattoo artists, I get it. But honestly I think this place was just trying to make them sound more popular than they really are. Anyway. He said he would forward my availability to Robbie and that Robbie would get in touch with me. Well I never heard from Robbie and I'm definitely done with trying with this place after some months. I'm not sure if it's because I only wanted a small piece done for now while I plan out some bigger ones. Maybe they thought I just wasn't worth their time. I picked Gypsy based on their emphasis on body positivity and creating a safe, non-threatening environment for anyone to have body art done. I let them assign me to an artist based on the design I wanted (delicate Elvish text), and I could not have been happier with Robbie. He prepared a few sizes for me to choose from, and spent extra time on placement to make sure I was totally happy with it before we started. Their hourly rate is VERY reasonable, and mine took less than an hour he didn't charge me the full amount. I will definitely be going back to Robbie for touch-up on an older tattoo, and would not hesitate to come back for something else new in the future. I researched multiple tattoo artists in the 'burgh and settled on Gypsy because Michelle seemed to specialize in intricate lace work based on her pictures.  She did not disappoint!  I like to "research" my artist because I feel it is important to feel a connection with them....they are after all.....right up in your business and inflicting pain on you.  Its an intimate few hours.  The placement of a very intricate lace garter was drawn from pictures and placed perfectly.  I silently sang along to my fav music as Michelle worked quickly.  My early session was great since no one else but  us were in the shop.  It healed perfectly.  The 2nd session went equally as well, albeit more painful on the back of my leg.  Michelle is a great artist who truly cares about her work and also wants to have that connection to the piece.  If you are looking for someone to do blood, guts, and skulls....Michelle is not your person.  But if you are looking for a genuine connection with a wonderful soul that will immerse herself in a beautiful piece, you've come to the right place with Michelle. I could probably write a novel about how amazing gypsy and Michelle is. I came in with a tattoo I hated and she was able to make it a piece I truly love. She actually listens to what you want and is patient and understanding that this will be on your body forever! She is so easy to talk to and collaborate on something awesome. If you have a chance to make an appointment with Michelle, don't pass it up. She is incredibly compassionate and she is an amazing person. Her work is beautiful and she really takes the time to make sure you have exactly what you're there for. I got my first tattoo here and it was a memorial tattoo for my cousin who had passed away. Though she was sick and had to reschedule, she made sure to get my mom and I in before we left PA to head home to Colorado after our short visit. This parlor has a very relaxed spa - meets - art gallery feel. The artists are kind, passionate and qualified (no fear of infection here!) and have done a wonderful job cultivating a place that is comfortable for the female/lgbtq crowd who wouldn't necessarily feel at home in the macho heavy metal atmosphere of your stereotypical tattoo parlor. I went here for my eighth tattoo and it was unlike any experience I've ever had getting ink. No aggressive music, pick a tatt off a wall, or angry men who make you feel vaguely unsafe here!  The space is light and airy and full of art. Michelle worked with me for a couple months to get the design just right based on an illustration that I love. I was drawn to her because of her incredible artistry and style: she specializes in an old school engraving style that works great with the look I was going for. Her studio is full of art books and old plant engravings. Not only is she an amazingly skilled artist, she's just a delight to be around. She did three solid hours of line work on my piece yesterday, the detail of which is just stunning. I can't wait to come back for color! Read Less

Today I just finished up my last session with Michelle on a cover up piece on my rib cage. The first time I met with Michelle was for a consultation a few days before Thanksgiving. She made sure to take her time and plan out exactly what would not only cover the old tattoo up, but distract the eye away so that nobody even notices what was there before. She has an art degree from The Parsons School of Design, inside of her studio looks like an art gallery, not a stereotypical heavy metal tattoo parlor. The coverup took about 7 hours total, going in for a hour here or there between December and April (my choice, have you ever had scar tissue tattoo'd on your rib cage?!) but all the time and pain was more than worth it. Every single encounter with Michelle and every other member of her staff was always so warm and welcoming. I felt like part of their family. There is a 1 star review posted by someone else because of the price per hour, that person does not realize, you are not paying for the size of the tattoo. What you are paying for is the uninterrupted time and creativity of an individual so that they can give you not only the tattoo you want, they go above and beyond your expectations. Also, they use high quality inks that give your skin the best color. One time Michelle mentioned to me in passing that just the cost of the ink for a one hour session with me cost $30. People forget that the price per hour includes more than what the artist values their time per hour, there are supplies that are also needed to give you the best piece of art that will last you a lifetime. The friendliest people in Pittsburgh, hands down. OK, so it was a early Tuesday morning and my girlfriend was going in for a scheduled c-section. We called numerous shops to try to find a place to take her nose piercing out for the surgery. We started to panic and we had no needle nose pliers and it was in their good. We must have called ten shops, nobody cared. We called Gypsy cause it was near the hospital, she was so genuinely kind. She opened the shop early to let us in, ...she removed the jewelry, offered to re-pierce it if it closed for free(originally not piered there) and gave her an alternate nose stud for free. Wow!!! The whole time she could not have been nicer, talking about her old profession of teaching children. I have lived all over from Eugene Oregon to Detroit Michigan and hands down the nicest person to meet on such a stressful day for us.
