I have a tattoo on my back I wanted to cover up and I was told to see Katie at Area 51 Tattoo to have a few sessions of laser removal done first. The shop itself is very cool and eclectic! Katie went over every possible detail with me upstairs (in the laser area) and answered all my questions. The laser was super painful, but it went fast and she was comforting... making sure I was doing okay the entire time. It feels like bacon grease landing on your skin, but the results are worth it. I did not blister or scab however it did itch for about two weeks! The results were great and I went back to see Katie again! If you need to have a tattoo removed, definitely go see Katie! We took our 5 year old to have her ears pierced today and the whole experience was wonderful. As always everyone was sweet and professional. They put on Minions for our 2 year old while we waited, which was awesome. Plus hot cookies from Katie. The cleanliness and professionalism is a 10 out of 10! Chris 51 did a couple pieces for me, one Nirvana and one GNR, and they came out great!  The shop is clean, friendly, and the toys bring back great memories.  I had a great experience here, and with the quality of work, it's worth it to me to wait for new ink till I come back up to Springfield... I discovered this shop in a groupon advertisment. I purchased the 2 session of tattoo removal for $75. The experiance I had with this amazing shop beyond anything I hoped for. Super clean and fun shop. Katie used her state of the art equipment to remove some decade old tattoos. She was amazing, kind and down to earth. While shoping around in Salem and Portland the lowest price I found per session was $150. Katie's coupon is less than $39 a session. Unbelievable! After several years of trying to find a great tattoo artist to finish my wife full back piece that had been started by another tattooer years earlier we finally found Chris 51 @ Area 51. This was the very best decision we could have made as his forte and wheelhouse happens to be the genre in which my wife's back tattoo was designed.The back story, several years ago my girl started this project only to have the original artist "get religion" about half way through the project, and tell her he could no longer work on her artwork he had started. This was devastating to my wife as the original tattooer had been working on her for months and she was now left with an incomplete back project for years.Fast forward; three years ago we found a local dude (I use that term loosely) who was supposed to be very good, had a little rep etc. - we talked to him in great length about completely someone else's work for her (a lot of tattooer's do not like to finish someone else's work) and he agreed. After several 2-3 hour sessions and hundreds of dollars later the piece was still not finished by this dude, his work was not only poor quality and incomplete - he also left the area after we had paid him (and several others had too come to find out) and bailed on us still owing her hundreds of dollars worth of time and work.Once again, she was left with an incomplete project that would now require a pro artist to not only finish the piece but cover up lots of bad work, bad color choices, blow outs, etc. Another couple years had passed and as she started looking for a professional to finish this long overdue project. I told her I didn't care where she went or how much it cost I just wanted her happy and it done right! Area 51 was not close but close enough to reach in a day drive (6+hours one way) so she made an advance appointment.Now Chris 51 stepped in - what a godsend. This man is not only talented beyond words, he accomplished in one 6 hour session more than the last knucklehead did in multiple weekly 2-3 hour sessions over several months.Chris reworked, covered up and redesigned my wife's back piece into a beautiful celestial work of art. My wife and his wife (she talked him into doing the project and a heartfelt thank you from us) had been in communication for several months leading up to our scheduled appointment, the day of our scheduled time Chris was waiting and ready to start on her back piece, he blocked the entire day off for her. Knowing it was going to be a long day, I did not deter them or stick around long once she got comfortable. Fast forward three hours - I popped in to bring her some food and check on her, and I was blown away by how far he had gotten and how great it was looking. A couple more hours later I returned again and he had just about completed a full shoulder to shoulder half back piece on her. They were both at the end of their thresholds and when he stopped it was unbelievable how much this amazing tattoo artist had gotten done and how beautiful it looked. Needless to say we have another full day appointment with him scheduled in the not to distant future, to finally complete this long overdue project. It took her years to get this artwork the way she's always wanted and it took a lot of looking, time and energy but, we finally found one of the very best around.
