Just want to express my appreciation for Shona, who was very patient and flexible with the customization and application of my first ever tattoo. She was willing to try a new technique that she hadn't experimented with before (realistic smoke) and I am now filled with joy every time I look at it because she did such a fantastic job! The studio itself is very inviting and comfortable and the other artist, Agnes, who was there was also very pleasant and helped give Shona some tips with how to go about doing the smoke. In addition to executing a tattoo that exudes talent and attention to detail, Shona also:-has excellent bedside manner-can read body language well, detecting doubt or discomfort easily and putting me at ease -is very real about her own abilities as an artist -provides tweaks and alternatives to designs very willingly and professionally I'd definitely recommend Shona whether or not it's your first tattoo because she is a queen of composition, placement, and style. Such a relaxing, friendly vibe at The Hive. Roll Hardy is at the top of his game. He has an uncanny ability to listen, and then manifest perfectly what my mind's eye has conceived for a new tattoo. The entire group of artists interact in a relaxed, up beat way. There is a certain decorum and etiquette that is expected among those who are about to be tattooed. I basically violated all of those expectations and was not only treated well, I was catered too in ways not expected. I took a design to Simon and not only did he improve on it ten fold, he also explained why and how he was making these artistic choices. As he worked his magic we talked about politics, art, religion, movies, geopolitics and what it means to be where he is from in this time and place he now calls home. Simon isn't just an amazing artist; he is a thinker. As the tattoo came to life I found the experience becoming more and more relaxing, not taxing and depleting like previous ink work I've had done. Sure the pain was present but I didn't feel like at any point Simon lost focus, betrayed his vision or treated my idea and body flippantly. I can't rave enough about the work Simon did for my second tattoo. He was able to draw exactly what I had in mind! He was very patient in the back-and-forth of discussing changes via email (I wasn't in the immediate area to discuss changes in person), and was willing to make last-minute tweaks the day of the appointment. The atmosphere of The Hive is also welcoming, very clean, and had some awesome music playing while I was there. All of the staff are also friendly, and were understanding despite my not having a voice at the time. I love this place. Joanne is the best! She's been reworking and adding to my bodyart for the past year and I'm very happy with the outcome. The atomsphere of the shop is freindly the relaxed. I'd been contemplating my first tattoo for literally four years and finally decided to go through with it five days ago. Just a simple, small cross between my shoulder blades (but still, it's going to be on my body forever - I was nervous!). Nate Luna at The Hive was recommended to me and he was able to see me same day. Upon walking into the shop, I was impressed with how open, clean, and inviting it was. I was very nervous but Nate made me feel welcome (this was huge because... I was worried about feeling out of place), calm, comfortable, and he was great about talking me through the process and not rushing. It's healing up very nicely and just last night I went back for my 2nd...already...a rose on my ankle that turned out beautiful!
