TLDR; Hanam is among the very few artists in the area I'd trust to do any Hanzi/Hanja/Kanji characters, and his skill is amazing.   At the close of one of the most horrid summers of my life, I wanted to commemorate what got me through this hard time.  For reasons I won't get into here, I wanted to commemorate it with a tattoo of the character "無."I'm sure you've heard of bad Kanji/Hanzi/Hanja tattoos, so I looked all over the Portland metro area (by internet, naturally) for an artist who had actually had some experience writing Asian calligraphy.  (As a practitioner of Asian calligraphy I knew what to look for.)  It is surprising  - uh, maybe not really - that there are folks in the area without training in 書道 who will try to execute such things anyway, and there's some really bad examples out there that they're actually promoting!Anyway, I found Hanam who does have the experience and background and skill to execute Asian character tattoos.  It took a little bit of time synching up with him, but it was well worth the trouble.  He tolerated my changing mind, which I appreciate greatly. And the thing is, his skill set is immensely broader than Asian characters; if you want a street art tat he's probably the best in the area for that too, as well as manga styles. Read Less

I spent long time looking for someone to do a Marine Corps emblem (EGA) and finally found Toby’s portfolio about a month ago. He does great work. I set up an appointment and this happened yesterday. Thought about going down to Oceanside or Norfolk for someone who does a lot of ‘em and knows what he’s doing. But didn’t want someone bored with doing same thing all time. Great place. I looked for 15 years at different portfolios and finally found someone with a style I liked very much, Toby Linwood at Tattoo 34 on Hawthorne. My first tattoo. He was very patient explaining process and procedure. Gentle touch, not near as painful as I thought it would be, but he spared no attention to detail. Love the detail in this tat. Check out the eye of the anchor where the rope passes through, OUTSTANDING!And my favorite; look at the cross bar of the anchor. Even through Black & Grey it looks like old brown wood. I’ve been tattooed at several different shops and this place was the first to really impress. The customer service was great and the shop had a chill, unpretentious vibe. Tattoo shops can be kind of elitist and artists treat you like they are gracing you with their presence, but I didn’t get that vibe here.
