I can not recommend Gabe more. I am visiting PDX for my birthday. I came to Martian Arts on a recommendation and connected with Gabe. I went in Monday to explain to him what I wanted, his excitement matched mine every step of the way. I scheduled an appointment for Friday. I showed up and he was ready and prepared to show me what he had worked up. He really worked with me on every single detail from design, to size, to placement. During my tattoo he checked on me regularly to make sure I was doing okay (high pain on chest tattoos). He made me feel very comfortable and important. He even used some topical numbing agent to help when we got to the shading (and it really did help!). I would give more than 5 stars if I could. A truly gifted artist. You will not be disappointed. I got my favorite singer to sign my arm when I met her at her show Friday night (Lizzo, if you didn't know, now you know) with the intention of having it tattooed forever. The trouble was finding a shop that had last minute availability - most other places were reservation only, and it was tough to find a place that would make it permanent before it faded completely. From the first phone call with Jerry, I knew this place would be the one to help me out. Adam was my artist and worked with me to get it exactly how I wanted it. He did an excellent job, and he was fun to talk to. I had him clean up the writing since it was signed quickly with sharpie, and the drawing Adam did was based off of what was left on my arm... much of it had been smudged while sleeping. I'm thrilled with the results. The vibe of the shop was very laid back and the music happened to be excellent while I was getting tattooed. I would be happy to come back for more work in the future! There is nothing bad to say about Martian Arts Tattoo. I've been in twice and I can safely say I will never be going anywhere else. All the artists are fun, kind, and go above and beyond to make sure you have the best looking tattoo possible. I was tattooed once by Jerry and once by Thor and they both did incredible work. I came to them with an idea and they offered up design ideas that took both tattoos from pretty good, to beyond beautiful and unique. They have the talent of turning your words and ideas into the perfect design. Not only are they talented, they went out of the way to make me as comfortable as possible. I'm not that great with pain, but they made it as painless as they possibly could, which was greatly appreciated. The prices are more than reasonable, they're always lower than I expect. He said he'd be able to do it that day but recommended to come in the next day so he could really work on our ideas. Even after that we had good conversation about podcasts - he was super friendly! Personality: both clay and the other tattoo artist were incredibly friendly. Clay (@clayharpole on ig) is a gentleman tattooist. Light handed and incredibly detail oriented. I put him through the ringer with redesign after redesign. He gave me feedback. And listened. And was incredibly patient throughout the entire process. I'm relatively new to tattoos (three) and his attitude helped me feel really comfortable. When we were done he gave me the clearest instructions for aftercare and when he learned I was flying hooked me up with a special patch for the art. Art: second to none. Clay's artwork was amazing. I absolutely love the work he did on my leg and willBe flying back out to have more work done by him. Add to that how quick he did it (less than an hour) and you have the mix for a one of a kind artist. I've had other artists tattoo on me and he absolutely beats them all. The folks who work at this tattoo parlor are the nicest humans I have ever met at a tattoo parlor. They're super welcoming and offer tea, candies, and water to their guests to make them comfortable. The tattoo artists are also most definitely artists. Some of the designs in the books are incredible. Clay has these awesome line tattoos that are brilliantly drawn and original. He also had a drawing of a daisy that was so real it looked like a photo. My boyfriend worked with Clay Harpole on a custom piece that turned out absolutely incredible. He took a lot of care in designing the piece, and didn't rush the process at all. There's also a bunch of cool stuff around this spot. There's great food (blue star donuts and tons of restaurants) and cool vintage shops. Amazing spot on job! I had wanted something that reminded me of my dad who had just passed. The problem was I didnt have a clue how to being the things together. Thats where Joanne came in!! Wow! My boyfriend and I decided on a whim to get tattoos the other day, and we couldn't be happier with the experience!! I came in wanting a small lavender sprig on my forearm. Kari drew up a few sketches for me to choose from, and when it was time to start she was very informative and so friendly while walking me through my first tattoo experience! I couldn't be happier, it is exactly what I wanted. After I got mine my boyfriend got the itch to get one too! He ended up choosing a design from Kari's sketchbook that he liked. She happily took the extra 2ish hours to draw up a stencil for him and tattoo it on his bicep! It turned out so amazing, we love looking at it every day in total all of the detail! I absolutely love everything about Maritans. From the moment I called and had to leave a message, they got back to me in less than 20 minutes. They got us in the next day, gave me an estimate of time and cost. We came in and everyone was super friendly. I worked with Amanda on what I wanted and she was very easy to work with and accommodating. They initially quoted me 2 hours and $280 - ended up being under an hour and she only charged me the shop minimum of $80! She even snuck my husband in for a quick finger tattoo. She's a doll! She took my old, ugly, poorly executed flower tattoo and turned it into the most beautiful piece of art. I can't stop staring at it. I love it!The shop itself is in a great location, right in the middle of bustling Hawthorne in SE between 33rd + 34th. It's upstairs and has lots of natural light and bright colors. This is not a dark, dingy spot. It's very welcoming, not to mention clean!It was very easy to set up an appointment via Facebook, and also send in pictures of what I currently had, and what I wanted to do. I have several small tattoos that I have collected here and there over the years.  Since it had been more than ten years my last addition I  I was finally ready for something bigger so I searched Yelp and read the many reviews for the many local tattoo studios and Martian Arts stood out .  I immediately had a good rapport with Joanne and entrusted her with the creation of my chest piece.   Every time I was walked up those stairs and into their studio I have felt welcome and at ease, after nearly twelve hours over several weeks there I felt at home and as if I had new friends.  Plus my chest looks beautiful and feels like the art was always there, we just couldn't see it before.P.S. Great customer service and fantastic custom art!When I knew I'd be in Portland twice in one month, it seemed like a good opportunity to find a shop and plan a new piece. I researched several tattoo shops online and decided to visit Martian Arts first. Everyone in the shop greeted me with a smile and a hello, and Jerry jumped up to help with the staff portfolios and answer questions. The shop was super clean, well organized, and had plenty of character. The next day I dropped by to talk about the concept I wanted, and Jerry Martian and Dan Donaldson took great notes and asked lots of questions. Since I wasn't sure which artist would be the best fit, they agreed to discuss it with the staff and see who was most excited about the concept. Dan contacted me the next day to let me know he'd be doing the work, and he asked a few more questions before starting his research. His first draft was even better than I was expecting, and over the course of the next three weeks, we emailed back and forth to tweak the concept. Knowing exactly what I was getting in advance was so much less stressful than settling for whatever can be drawn up while you wait.We scheduled my appointment for my second trip, and Dan blocked off the whole day just in case. When I arrived, all the artists were getting into full swing, and the shop was a pleasant buzz of activity, with good background music. Though the session was about five hours, the conversation was enjoyable, and Dan took his time to get everything perfect. Since I was flying back home the next day, Dan and another artist took special care to apply a breathable but waterproof adhesive wrap that can be kept for up to 48 hours, and the result was great.As we were wrapping up, a couple of my friends dropped in to see the end result, and they were shocked at Dan's mastery of the watercolor/shading on my comic-inspired piece. And they were more shocked that at the end of a long day, he took time to talk with them about the technique, show them the staff portfolios, and make some suggestions about a cover up one of them was considering. She'll be back this week to start planning a piece.I'm already thinking about my next visit. With any luck, we can come up with something that involves a collaboration of several Martian artists. I recently moved to Portland and am just getting to know the area.  I had wanted some new ink for a while & I figured with all the change happening in my life, now would be a good time.  I scanned the internet for a local tattoo shop but just wasn't overly impressed with what I saw.  While Visiting WTF bikes, the owner Tom, pointed me in the direction of Martian Arts.  He showed me some of the tattoos he had done there & talked of how great Joanne & Jerry were.  He also attested to the fact that any of the other artists in the shop would be as just good because they only hired the best.  With such a ringing endorsement & proof right there on his skin I figured why not stop in.I was immediately impressed with the cleanliness & environment of Martian Arts. The music was pumping & the tattoo guns were buzzing away.  Although Jerry & Joanne were busy with clients, they still managed to greet me with a smile & point out the portfolios of all the artists who worked at the shop.  They let me know that someone else would be in within the next few minutes & offered me refreshments, for me that went a long way. Within a few minutes of my arrival, as promised, someone showed up & was prepared to answer my questions.  Amanda Pea walked in the door loaded up with her gear, said hello & asked me if I needed help.  She obviously was just getting into work but rather than go get her self set up she tossed all the stuff she was lugging to the side & was happy to help to make my next tattoo come to life.So there I am with this hip smiling gal ready to explain my tattoo wants & needs.  After a lengthy back & forth discussion I was ready to prop down a minimal deposit & set an appointment up for my next piece.  Amanda was very attentive & involved with what I wanted.  I had two things in mind, some simple script & a piece that was a sort of heritage concept & family dedication (We won't talk about my other idea that she wisely steered me away from. Thank god for her sensibility.) Amanda gave me her contact info & told me to email her my ideas, pictures and anything else that pops into my head regarding the tattoos.  She even told me to find her Facebook so I can see more of her work that she did not have readily available in her portfolio.  Her work was amazing and I was excited to see what she could do for me.  Now when someone says email me your ideas & I will look at them, I expect what I have experienced in other trips to a tattoo studios. The artist still ends up drawing your tattoo the day you get there as you are watching.  I don't exactly find this as a fault but sometimes I wonder is there a chance that it could have been better? To my pleasant surprise this is not at all what happened with Amanda.I emailed Amanda & she promptly responded.  My appointment was not for another week or so & she was already interacting with me.  Soon my inbox pinged with mock-ups & sketches of what was to come.  I asked my questions, tossed her ideas & she responded in kind & very quickly.  This girl was professional & smart all rolled into one.  She had several great ideas & suggestions for me that helped to develop my idea.  It was one of the best experiences I have ever had. So far  Amanda Pea was simply amazing.It has now been more than a week after my tattoos & I am finally sitting down to write this review.  The script on my arm was a simple phrase & something folks may find a bit cliché but never mind them, I love it.  Amanda's art and lines are sharp, crisp & done with an amazingly steady hand. It is exactly what I wanted but as I said before that was the simple one.  The other piece Amanda did is currently my pride & joy.My parents despise tattoos at least until this last one.  When I showed my mom Amanda's work she teared up & simply said that is a tattoo I will allow you to have (As if she could take away the others).  Amanda took my heritage & along with my parents initials merged it all into a magnificent piece that brought my tattoo-hating mother to tears.  That's an artist.  Yes maybe it is the added nostalgia that made my mother cry but if it was an ugly tattoo my mother would have waived it off with a disgruntled harrumph, of that I am fairly certain. It is such a meaningful piece that my brother who will be visiting me in July will be getting the exact same tattoo done. I've been getting work done at Martian Arts for about 3 years, and it is the best tattoo experience I have ever had. I personally am a huge fan of Joanne Martian, as we have very similar taste in tattoos and style, but Jerry's work is also exceptional. Joanne has done 90% of the work on my body and currently I try to make it in to see her as much as possible. The shop is one of the most comfortable places to be, I look forward to long sessions there where I get to hang out for the day, as there is always a good mood and lots of smiles. I am officially in love with this shop.First off, the location is amazing. Being able to look down over Hawthorne while getting tattooed is pretty bad ass. This shop is tattoo paradise! Married Martian team Jerry and Joanne are rock stars!! Not only are they super cool people they are both extremely talented tattoo artists. The shop itself has a great energy to it and is centrally/conveniently located in Hawthorne.  My husband and I were both tattooed by Joanne recently and couldn't have had a better experience. I have not had any work done by Jerry yet, but have many friends who have and they all sing his praises. We are however in the beginning stages of an add-on large piece that I'm quite excited about. I am a bartender and have a lot of visible ink, so it am constantly being asked where to go for a great tattoo. I always recommend Martian as I know they will have a great experience. Read Less
