Versago does have a very nice portfolio, but good luck actually getting any work done with him. After following his work for many years, I went in for an initial appointment at Empire Ink to discuss having a large piece of work with the owner, Scott. We agreed to begin work on the project, and when we discussed payment he told me that he had a deal running that if I bought a gift certificate he would doulbe the face value. He gave me a price and encouraged me to pay in full $1,000 for $2,000 worth of work. Well, here we are more than a year and a half later, and it isn't complete. Scott is nearly impossible to get a hold of, let alone actually get an appointment with - and I don't mean in the variety where "he's a popular artist and is booked up frequently" because that is totally reasonable. In order to get an appointment with Scott, I would have to call multiple times, leave multiple messages with the receptionist, leave messages on his Facebook until he would finally respond and even then it was literally a 50/50 if he was going to cancel the appointment or not. He cancelled three appointments on me total, one 2 hours prior to my appointment. Look through his reviews and you'll see this is a common issue occurring across multiple clients for years. After 8 months (!!!) of calling, leaving messages, and messaging Scott for my next appointment, I finally secured one. Hallelujah! I drove the 1.5 hours it takes for me to get to Mr. Versago's shop. When I arrive he asks if he can see my tattoo and then proceeds to ask me what the "money situation" was. I let him know I paid in full and then he asks me what kind of deal he gave me. He then asks if it'd be okay if one of his other employees completed the work. I told him I'd look at a portfolio but right away I felt super uncomfortable about this. He introduced me to the other artist, and after briefly discussing the tattoo Scott went back to his office. Even if I had been blown away by the other artist (I was not), I personally would NEVER let an artist I'm 100% unfamiliar with with put work on my body. After all, it's permanent! And it has already been almost half completed by another artist! I have never heard of a tattoo artist telling a client that they are no longer completing their work and someone else complete it. Many tattoo artists would actually be offended if a client had someone else complete a piece that they started. The whole thing felt so completely unprofessional, and Scott made it pretty clear he was no longer interested in working on the piece so he brushed me off on someone else. After speaking with him about the whole ordeal, he claimed he didn't want to work on the tattoo because he was "sick." If that were the case, he could have called me and rescheduled like he had multiple times in the past instead of making me drive 3 hours for nothing, he could have called and explained his plans for me to work with someone else, he could have even expressed he wasn't feeling well when I got to the shop and offered me the OPTION of rescheduling or working with another artist. I've been nothing but understanding every time he's rescheduled and pushed back my appointments in the past. But no. Instead he pushed me off on someone else without so much as an explanation. After explaining my views on the situation, I was then said he would reschedule my appointment with him as the artist. I told Scott at this point I don't even feel comfortable with him completing the piece, because he made it very blatantly obvious that he doesn't want to and I surely don't want that reflected in something that will permanently be on my body. I told him that if he wanted another artist to complete the work that's fine, but it will be an artist of my choosing at a different shop. I was told he doesn't offer refunds on deposits. Yeah, no kidding, deposits are in place to make sure people don't waste artists' time. I didn't pay a deposit, I paid in full for work with Scott, NOT with another artist, that was NOT FULFILLED. If I wanted another artist to do my work, I would have went to another artist. It's not at all unreasonable to ask for a partial refund of a service that was not performed to completion. Look over his reviews and you'll find he has done this to COUNTLESS people, getting them in on gift cards and promotions and then never following through with the work. According to another Yelp review, Scott himself said that "he makes people prepay for the "deals" he does and he decides if he wants to do the work or not and keeps the money because it's "non-refundable".
