I'm really not much for stories, but here goes. This one is special. My 6-year old finally asked for earrings. We knew it was coming, but wanted her to make her own decisions.I knew I wanted to avoid the mall and take her to a piercing parlor. I posted on Facebook looking for recommendations. 5 people from different social circles recommend Dorje, so I figured it was at the very least worth looking at their website.So....... Take your time and READ if you're making arrangements for a child. For a child under 12, they require a consultation. You also need to bring the child's birth cert and your photo ID for the piercing. Setting up an appointment was not fun , but it was probably my fault for emailing instead of just calling. Consultation hours are Tues - Fri from noon to 7PM (call to veirfy). We finally set up a consultation at 3 on a Friday. We show up 20 minutes early and the crew is having lunch outside. Sara drops everything and spend the next 10 minutes talking to "the creature" about getting earrings, and the do's and don'ts, hygeine and cleanliness, precautions.... all in a way that a 6-year old understands. We then meet with Tom, the piercer. He talks through the procedure and even demonstrates what to expect. And that was it. We were encouraged to call or email with any additional questions. We left to "think it through."I made another appointment for the following Friday. When I called, they made sure to verify that I've had a consulation before making the piercing appointment. The big day finally arrives, and we're greeted with much enthusiasm. Sara recognised us as we walked in, and this put the kid at ease immediately. My creature was very excited to see that Tom would be the one who'd do the piercing. We started off with the kiddo picking out her own earrings. While she was doing that with Tom, I fill out some paperwork, and hand over the birth cert and my drivers licence for Sara to make copies. We're then taken into the room. Tom starts by recapping the procedure and asking the kid again if she has any questions, if she's sure she wants earrings, if she understands what's about to happen. And importantly, that she can call a stop to the whole thing whenever she wants, that she was in control, and that no one is making her do this. The piercing itself went very smoothly. the single longest bit seemed like Tom making sure both sides were lined up properly when he marked the ear lobes with a marker. Tom pierced one ear, and let the creature jump off the table to take a look in the mirror, and it was then back for #2. And that was it. We were given a pressurised bottle of saline for cleaning, the creature got a goodie bag, we paid, and left. We'll be back in a month for a check-up.So.... all in all, it was an outstanding experience. It took a while, but I don't think I'd have it any other way. It is obvious that they care about what they do, take it seriously, and are very much comfortable working with children. We'll definitely be back for the next kid when she's ready for earrings.
