Hidden gem for sure! My friend and I drove from VA to NY for the weekend for a mom vacation and we had the honor to step into Rising Dragon Tattoos. My artist was Chris, first tattoo so I played it safe with the tiny tattoo. Literally took 2.5 minutes, set up was longer... but, Chris was really cool about it. He cracked jokes and made the experience a breeze! -Look, the picture of my tattoo below didn't do justice for this mans talent I know, but walking into the shop having bubble guts and sweating out of fear of needles! Chris, a tatted angel sent from the tattoo gods calmed me with his tattoo gun harp and jokes! So I'm going to flaunt my tiny diamond of a tattoo and assure you reviewers that this tattoo shop is worth the visit! My friends artist was Nino, not her first tattoo but she was still nervous. Nino helped her choose the location of her tattoo, and also made her feel comfortable with everything! He brang that Florida sunshine to NY for sure! I got my first tattoo from Jason Barletta at Rising Dragon. His work is excellent and he has a great bedside manner. I sent him several pictures in advance and told him what I liked about each. He used those ideas to design a custom piece for me, which we tweaked a bit until it was exactly what I was looking for. He was a great artist for my first tattoo, both because of his exquisite skill and also because of his chill demeanor. Don't skip out on this gem of a place. First of all, their response time is great. They responded quick to my emails about getting a consultation and I got to speak with Jason within the next few days. Come the day of the consultation, Jason was not only accommodating to all of my ideas, he seemed to be just as excited as I was to do this tattoo. His passion and attention to detail is one of the best that I've seen and it shows in the badass tattoo that he gave me. In addition to all this, the vibes/music/lady at the reception were all super pleasant and it felt like I was hanging out with friends while getting my tattoo. A friend highly recommended this place, and after a great appointment, I agree!I sent a message on Yelp and received a very quick response regarding their busiest times and a cost estimate of my design.  (Their minimum is $100, which is what mine would be.) I came in right when they opened the next day, and Jason was available to take me.  My tattoo was a quick design on my wrist, so I was in and out in less than an hour.  Jason's a really nice guy and he was very concerned about making it look perfect.  He joked that his nickname is "Gentle Jason," and I've gotta say: it really didn't hurt as much as I had anticipated!Note: There is a 10% service charge if you are using a credit card.  I didn't mind, but if that's not your jam, then bring cash.I'm very glad to have found this place & I definitely will keep them in mind if I want tattoo #3! I can only write about the receptionist and the artist named Jace....I went in for two very easy tattoos. One sentence and a small horseshoe. Jace talked incessantly and forgot to cross the "T" on one of the words in the sentence, and two words are no longer visible. The horseshoe has since washed away (3 weeks), so I went back to ask for it to be redone...the receptionist said 'no, that they don't redo tattoos'....especially in white ink. I have a lot of tattoos in white ink, some are 30 years old....and she said ink today isn't as strong as back then, good to know now. When I asked her if she would be happy in my situation, she replied 'she would never get her ink done here'. So, now I have two tattoos, I'm 4 weeks in, both have since washed or faded away and I've spent $180.00. Again, I can only speak about my experience with those two. Read Less

My husband and I were getting our first tattoos ever and Jason was AWESOME!! Went in for a Friday the 13th tattoo. There were so many really funny and interesting designs to choose from. I decided on my tattoo and the wait was super short which was surprising but nice. Chris, who did the tattoo, was really kind. It was my first tattoo and I think it showed considering how nervous I was, but everyone was really cool about it. I have dark skin, so I never thought about adding color to a tattoo, but after speaking with Darren, he's shown me that certain colors can be added and the tattoo will still pop. I decided to get my first tattoo a few months ago, and Rising Dragon seemed to have an excellent reputation, so that's where I headed. I chose Paolino to do it, based on photos of his work. I had a rough idea of what I wanted and he sketched it out and was flexible in making the changes I wanted. I was very happy with the tattoo, but after living with it a couple of months I decided I wanted to tweak it some--a little more color here, a little darker there. Paolino happily did the work and was not going to charge me for it, even though these were my additions, not fixes of anything he'd done wrong. (I did give him some money--he deserved it.) I live in Australia and was to be visiting New York in May 2018. My mother had recently passed away and I was wanting to have a memorial tattoo done. Communication between Rising Dragon and myself was super easy and always was answered promptly. I requested Jason, after having a look at all artists work. As I felt he was the most suitable to the type of work I was wanting done, I have fallen in love with water splash tattoos. Rising Dragon Tattoo Shop This is beyond the best find in New York!! The shop is clean and the people are so nice, welcoming, knowledgeable and funny! I found Rising Dragon through an endless search looking for a cover up artist (which is very hard to find) I have been to many other shops, which I get the same response, oh no we can’t cover that! Oh no you need tattoo removal or yes I can do it but instead of your idea how about a completely different thing, that I probably haven’t given much thought about and of course let me wear this forever! I like to know that my artist is not afraid to really look at my tat from different angles, touch the skin, and ask me what I want, all during the consult but also during the session. Also, I value that he clearly listened to me and valued and integrated my input. 3. The brightness and cleanliness of the shop itself. So important to have good lighting and safety/cleanliness protocols in place. 4. The convenience of the shop location. 5. The reasonable rates. I got four hours done on (what I call) my sock of 20+ hours. I feel as though Darren captured the essence of what I wanted, which was for my Phoenix to pop with flaming color, to fill in some cloud transitions, and make my moon look more like a moon. Met Bruce Springsteen in NYC and asked him to sign my arm. Went to Dragon based on reviews online and they did not disappoint, Red did a fantastic job on the lines of the signature and was great to deal with (even took a pic with me afterward) great experience . Dragon is a super clean and professional tattoo parlour and charged a very reasonable price. Went back to the Walter Kerr Theatre and saw Bruce after the show. Went in earlier today for my very first tattoo. I had an idea for a cool trash polka style kind of anchor and went in to talk to Jason Barletta a week ago, after looking through some of his instagram posts. I liked his style a lot and when I went in the lady at the front desk kindly told me to head upstairs where Jason was. He was very welcoming and listened to my idea and saw a reference picture I brought in. After talking for a few minutes we decided to set up an appointment for today at 3pm. I was excited since he told me he'd have something better then what I showed him. I was impressed when i saw what he came up with and even more impressed when we were close to finishing because it seemed to only get better and better. When it was done I was so happy with it. The place was clean, friendly staff, reasonable price for such great quality work, and overall a great experience. I just went in to get new septum jewelry. I asked to get my old ring switched out with the one I bought at the store. But I had a very bad experience. - The guy hurt me a lot while just removing my original jewelry. I've had the same jewelry taken off before aft piercing parlors and never got hurt. - He pretty much ruined my original jewelry by bending it a lot while taking it out. It was expensive and I hope I'll be able to bend it back and have it fit properly in the future. And when he was finished he even asked if I wanted it back. As if jewelry is not precious to someone. - And after I left I realized that he gave me the wrong size gauge. It was a size smaller but that's not too important. Basically a good piercer should never hurt someone while simply taking jewelry off and also be respectful of the jewelry the customer comes in with. Jewelry can be expensive. I was a Monday walk-in (something I never thought I would do) and everyone was very welcoming and kind. I was literally a hot mess about to fly back to LA (I'm a stereotype, I know, I know), and these lovely humans charged my phone and made sure I got the ink I wanted. Jason did my tattoo and he did several things I really appreciated: 1) he took the design and my input very seriously, 2) he took his time with placement (asking questions and having me confirm everything) 3) shading! Jason absolutely took the time to carefully and skillfully shade my design. It is by far one of the more detailed pieces I've seen with this particular placement. He also was super patient with me moving my arm from time to time because it falling asleep at such a strange angle. Their pricing is very reasonable (as with everything, you get what you pay for and I personally don't mind paying good money for good tattoos) and there is a discount for paying cash. I went in for a consult with Eddie , he was very professional and instilled in me a sense of peacefulness. I was able to have a lengthy consult with him and he went over every detail regarding what I wanted , I have not done my tattoo yet but so far I've been very happy with the entire process. I met Darren 2 years ago when I visited NYC for the first time in a decade. I had a very important memorial tattoo that I wanted to have done and reached out to him about getting it while I was visiting. I don't usually give reviews but after just getting a tattoo here today I had to give credit. I decided to come here out of no where on a why not let me get a tattoo kind of thing. It was my first tattoo and after reading the good reviews I decided to come here. I showed the receptionist what I wanted and she quickly told me jason was the one. I made an appointment for two days later and came then. Jason made me feel so comfortable and made me feel like I was with a friend. We cracked jokes and did the rose I pictured I'd always have. The front desk woman is horrendous, the artist eddi completely unreasonable. from the moment I came in to make an appointment she was rude. As you everyone knows things can happen in life, my work required that I show up the day of my tattoo, so rather than allow me to reschedule, they cancel my appointment entirely. But it's fine, they can keep the deposit. They're artist skills do not equate the cost, I can just go elsewhere where they use high quality ink and more refined styles such as: first class nyc tattoo, sacred tattoo, the artitude, club inked, no idols, red baron, all wolves no sheep. Awesome place!!! From the minute I walked in, the receptionist was super nice and quickly called the artist that would be the best fit for the type of tattoo I wanted. I was getting my first tattoo. I had an idea of what I wanted but I didn't have it drawn out. My artists, Jason, was fantastic. He took his time to design something awesome for me. Exactly what I was looking for. Although my tattoo was painful because I got it on my rib cage and it was my first one, it was well worth it. Jason always listened to me and made sure I was as comfortable a possible. Overall, the staff was very friendly. The place is super clean and cozy. I will definitely come back when I decide to get my second one. I met with Darren for a consult and a week later he sketched a better version than what I had imagined. These are all attributes I wanted/needed in the artist who was putting my soul on my skin. Darren has a confidence in his skill set that puts you at ease. Throughout the process I preferred his ideas over my own and I left with something that I consider beautiful. Gave me a horrible septum piercing -- permanently altered my nose after promising to be an experienced piercer.  Pierced through the cartilage (which would have been obvious to any experienced piercer due to the amount of pressure required to pierce through it) and did not even use a proper piercing ring, as noted by the person who later removed the piercing.  Not to mention, it was crooked.  Could not be less impressed.  Would not recommend for any piercing -- it is not their speciality -- do not trust those who will tell you otherwise!  Horribly painful and regrettable experience.Darren - it was the only ring available at the time and it was pierced with the screw side, which as I was told later is never supposed to be used.  I was out state when I realized it was crooked and got it removed.  The comments on the pain I experienced and the crookedness are entirely my own observations, not those of the other shops.  It was one of the most painful experiences of my life and was not pierced through the "sweet spot" as it should have been.  The piercer was kind, but clearly ill fit to perform this job. I LOVED it (still do) & wanted another right away, planned out the design for my 2nd one & everything! Alas, I never carved out time in my little E Vill rocker chick existence to get that done...Fast forward a couple decades...life is different from top to bottom, & I find myself wanting something to commemorate my incredible son. The design I originally envisioned wasn't the same for me after a family tragedy (long story) so after a lot of thought, I had decided on my son's monogram. Since I wanted this about only about 3" in diameter, I figured I would just walk in last Wed night & get this done (Darren is by appointment only & I'm assuming he only does larger, more complicated designs). The receptionist was super nice; everything was clean & comfy. Alex did mine & he rocks - he was really accommodating as we worked out the design. I brought a few examples of sweeping, swirly fonts/monograms I liked but none of them were "the one." After Alex did a draft, I let him know what I wanted to add/change, melding all the different elements I liked from the printouts plus a few more from my head. This took some time....every now & then I would feel so idiotic telling him to put a tiny swirl here or there but he remained uber-patient & we finally got it looking the way I wanted it. At one point when we were working out placement on me, I asked for it to go a little towards the back (I told him I wanted it in the center of my inner calf). He said "It won't be in the center anymore but I'll move it there." I looked again, reconsidered & he was right; I appreciated that.I LOVE my new tattoo! I know it's "just" a monogram but the fact that I got the hazy design floating around in my mind materialized on me, honoring my son, makes it so meaningful. My son (he's 6) is absolutely thrilled by it too. This has put such a spring in my step that I am already plotting making an appointment with Darren to retouch & add to the tat he did 22 yrs ago! (Unfortunately I probably won't get to it until next year but I am already collecting ideas...)Alex, you deserve a medal for slowly working this out to be something beautiful that makes me smile everyday! Best place you could go to.I went in today just for a consultation and after spending about 15 minutes talking about how I wanted it, he drew it up. I ended up getting it right away. It's my first tattoo and I got on my rib cage, it's a quote with bolder font and in script. My artist was Jason and my man finessed it. I really couldn't have asked for anything better from helping with the idea to me being comfortable for my first tattoo especially on my ribs. Just amazing. Thanks once again!! Read Less

I went in simply to have a ball screwed back on one of my earnings. They said it would be  $10. I have been to many, many piercings places and I have never had one charge me so much for something so simple. I went elsewhere in the city to get my tongue pierced and the guy did a totally botched job. He pierced my tongue way farther than he should and it was terrible.I came to Rising Dragon to get it pierced again a few days later and was so happy with the outcome. The piercer here is SO nice and honestly makes you feel more at ease because he knows what he's doing. I also got my nipples re pierced from him and he did a great job. Rising Dragon has better piercers and better knowledge in general.  The other guy I went to get my nipples pierced from used a smaller bar and the one here found the perfect size immediately. They're a bit more expensive but you're paying for what you get! Rising Dragon is 100% clean and efficient. They won't fuck you over. Read Less

On Sat Oct 1 I had the pleasure of getting an amazing piece done by Alex at Rising Dragon.  It's a UFO abducting a guy on my inner forearm in black and grey.  It's seriously so awesome I love it. This is my 10th tattoo and by far Alex has been the best artist I've seen.  I highly recommend Rising Dragon for anyone looking to get quality work done.  The staff and other artists are really friendly and welcoming and the shop is clean and organized with a relaxing mood all around.  5 stars.  I'm 100% going back and having Alex do the rest of my sleeve. Always a great experience--my second time there, i was only in town for 6 days and wanted to get a full sleeve done. Every other place i called would not do it and said it would take at least 12-15 sessions for a full sleeve which obviously i did not have the time for. Luckily, i got the beast himself, Paolino to do the impossible. He spent 3 sessions and close to 20 hours and it came out amazing. Charged me less than expected and didnt even charge me for the artwork he did to spice up the sleeve and add to the ideas that i had. The process was smooth and he was focused the entire time, making sure i was happy with everything he was doing along the way. Super passionate about his work, very humble, nice guy and a great artist. From what ive seen, all of the artists at rising dragon are great but i would highly recommend Paolino. Read Less

What an amazing experience! I came here yesterday and I had a really cool experience while getting my first tattoo. The treatment was great and the workers are really friendly and easygoing. I asked a really good friend where can I get a good-quality tattoo and he suggested this place. I loved the way Jason treated me and he did an amazing job! He was really helpful on what I wanted and he suggested some tweaks to the tattoo I got. I'm content with his job and I will definitely come again to get another one. The atmosphere was pleasant and the guys were really funny, which it helps you relax and distract yourself  while the tattoo artist works on you. This review is really only for the piercing/jewelry situation. Most tattoo/piercing places that I've been to before have a decent selection of jewelry and are happy to sell it to you if you're looking for a replacement. This is not one of those places. Which is perfectly fine! I just wish they made that clear. First of all, they told me they wouldn't sell me any jewelry without the piercer there, even when I told them all I was looking for was a replacement for a nose hoop I had just lost. When the piercer finally got there, he seemed confused why someone would want to buy jewelry without getting a new piercing, and seemed to make up the price on the spot ("uhh, $20 for a new hoop...you can just pay me in cash." Not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure that's a huge overcharge, and also seemed SUPER unprofessional). Like I said, it's fine if you don't do standalone sales of jewelry. Just be upfront about it! Anyone I talked to could have just said sorry, we don't do that. But instead, I walked out of there feeling like I had been played, all because I needed a quick replacement piece and they were the closest shop around. Maybe they're good for tattoos, but stay away if you're looking to purchase jewelry (and honestly I wouldn't want to do any piercing work here either based on the un-professionalism of the piercer). What a great experience! I haven't had gotten a tattoo in almost 20yrs and being in NYC for 10yrs, had no idea where to go, who to trust in NYC. A couple mentioned this tattoo shop.. So i finally decided to stop in and get a the tattoo I've been wanting. I walked in on an early afternoon- The receptionist was very nice, the waiting areas were comfortable. And I was sent up to see Jason. He did a great job. It's a beautiful little tattoo. Jason made me feel very comfortable, and was very easy going when I tweaked the tattoo I wanted here and there- prior to the actual tattooing of course. He also made some suggestion for adding a little more to it that I love! I will definitely be back soon to see Jason for the next tattoo I need to get. Having reached that age of regrets, I finally decided to get a tattoo. I had something very specific in mind. and it included a full sleeve.....yes my first tattoo. I chose Horisei, who honed his skill apprenticing with a Japanese tattoo Master in Japan. He is very skilled and focused.After a consultation, we met today, and he started my piece of artwork. It was painful, no mincing words, but it came out beautiful. I'll have a few more sessions with him until it is done, but I can't wait!!Professionalism, serenity, hospital sterility, and true lighting focus is what you will find. I am in love with my first tattoo! Jason redid an idea that I had on paper with patience because I wasn't 100% certain about it and he made the perfect piece for me. He was also funny and kept me calm since I was so so nervous. Highly recommend Jason! I had gone to three kings prior to coming to Rising Dragon and met the most pretentious artist who was recommended by Gotham Magazine. Fromt the moment I began my search, and search I did for quite sometime, i knew I wanted somplace that was friendly, accomodating, non-intimidating, and ultra professional. Rising Dragon is it. For a first timer, you might get a little queasy in the stomach, but they will do everything to make you feel right at home. From initial appointment, to consultation, to implementation, they are a class act and have no issue answering questions. I chose Wendi, who is truly awesome, and made the experience fun and as pain free as possible, (the last half hour was a teeth clencher but I came through!). The first hour or so flew by though, we even took a quick break and shared a stogie, and then for the last hafl hour she bared down and got me through the last part of the session. In the end, the price was just right, and very fair, and I walked away very very happy. Everyone who has seen it is pleased, and it amazed that there is practically no swelling, and no scabbing. You get what you pay for!! next time i will be heading back her way when it comes time for another one. Some of their artists have longer waiting times then others, so find who you want, and book in advanced if you know they are in demand, they will be worth the wait. Trust me!! I did a lot of research before getting my first (and currently only) tattoo. That's how I landed on Darren at Rising Dragon. The space is really comfortable, the tattoo artists all seem really cool and easygoing. I chose Darren for his experience with and love for dragons. He's an amazing artist and as soon as I told him what I wanted and where I wanted it, he just started drawing on my foot with markers until he was happy with what he came up with (I was also happy with what he came up with). This tattoo parlor is great, the people there are friendly and know what they are doing. I got my first tattoo here (by the owner). It was a great experience and tattoo came out great. I knew what I wanted already but couldn't find the right image. He did that for me and suggested I added a few more things to it. Great Parlor, from the time you walk thru the door, and talk to either the receptionist or any artist you realize, .... ""This IS the place that I want to get my tattoo done"". This is not your everyday average shop. The entire staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, regardless if this is your 1st tattoo or another to add to your list/ body, you are treated the same. This is the only tattoo shop that I would ever consider getting a tattoo at because its very professionally run, clean, and the tattoo artists are all friendly and make you feel like part of the family. The vibe in this shop is the best! My husband uses Darren as his artist. Darren has done both of my husband's full arm sleeves. Darren is the master of creating amazing tattoos. He is gifted with that tattoo gun, making precise lines and he finishes it off with color, blending together the most wicked shades, this guy really knows how to make color pop! The colors are so vivid, that the tattoo takes on a life of its own. His artistry really shines when it comes to his Japanese themed work, including dragons, masks, warriors, goddesses, and koi fish. i have 3 small tattoos, and i was shopping around for a good shop in nyc to get my first big custom piece. i have heard about rising dragon and since they were in union square, i went on my lunch break to check it out. well, after checking the portfolios, i picked an italian artist named Simone because his work seemed to pop out the most. now i am in the process of getting a huge, colorful piece and i couldn't be more pleased. his design way exceeded my expectations. and the colors...wow! i get so many compliments and its not even halfway done. this guy is really professional and he really made me feel very comfortable... a real gentleman. my girlfriend just checked the rising dragon site and Simone now has his own website so please check it out @ www.simonelubrani.com...you will see what i mean. his work is really solid and you really can see my tattoo from down the block. an amazing experience with rising dragon and Simone, i can't wait until summer to show off his work. a great shop with great artists, very clean, friendly,and professional.
