You know how some people stalk their favorite celebrity on Instagram? Well I like keeping an eye on my favorite tattoo artists. I just patiently wait until they announce their arrival in my city. That's the beauty about living in NY, so many talented artists come here for guest spots, you just have to watch and be patient and saving money for a tattoo would also be a plus. "Little Annie Motel" is definitely one of those said tattoo artist. She has a very distinct and recognizable style that I love. She draws these feminine almost flapper/mime style faces. I knew she would be perfect for my sad cloud tattoo. I collaged some of the faces she makes with some sad cloud and heart samples. And we communicated via instagram. I put in my deposit and made my appointment a few weeks before her arrival. Yesterday was finally the day. It was my first time in Gnostic Tattoo. Everyone was super friendly and the space was large and colorful with tons of decor. I met Annie who is as cool in real life as she is on the World Wide Web. She actually drew my tattoo right on front of me. This is the first time I've even gone for an appointment where my tattoo was drawn free hand. I trust her. And as time passes it looks fantastic. My beautiful sad cloud comes to life. She makes sure to check in on me. I'm happy with what I see. And we go straight into it. Annie is an artist and the tattoo takes time to do the line work, the shading, adding the right hints of red and I love that she added some pops of white. We talked for hours about traveling, life in California specifically LA and boys! Ha! Time flew and the tattoo just kept getting better and better. Couldn't be happier with my first tattoo from Maggie at Gnostic Tattoo! She was incredibly skilled, gentle, and chill - we chatted and laughed together as she was working and she made me feel supremely comfortable, I was honestly shocked at how comfortable I felt with her given this is my first tattoo!  Maggie was open to and supportive of all my notes regarding the shape and placement, and pushed back when her insight was deeper than mine (she encouraged me to get the piece slightly larger than I had initially envisioned since in 20 years the size I wanted would bleed into a shapeless mass, and this one will keep it's shape despite aging). She was very responsive to emails and extremely accommodating for my various scheduling changes, ultimately making time for me at the last minute. Maggie is clearly a skilled artist and particularly skilled at brushstroke tattoos - mine is absolutely perfect. It's an exact replica of my grandfather's handwriting which I sent to her in advance but which she redrew herself since my original wasn't good quality. I can't sing her praises enough! I also had the opportunity to watch Maggie consult with my friend who joined me about her tattoo the next day, and Maggie is clearly a professional with deep knowledge of tattooing and the shape and proportions of the body - my friend is getting an arm band near her elbow, which we both assumed would be simple but Maggie explained is actually more complicated since that area of the arm is more a cone than a cylinder (who knew, not me). Neither my tattoo nor my friend's consult felt rushed, and Maggie took her time with both of us to ensure that we were in agreement about what we wanted.The shop itself has a relaxed and cozy feel, with lots of decorations up on the wall, incense burning, and music playing. One thing to note is that the shop is cash only, so make sure you take out enough in advance (plus tip!). A chair was immediately made available for my friend to sit with me too. The shop itself is a very open space, but somehow it also felt very private? I wasn't facing any other shop patrons so I really felt like it was just me, my friend, and Maggie. I had a great experience with Chris Wednesday as a walk in this Sunday. He was very professional and he made me feel at ease during the consultation as far as placement and color for my customized tattoo. The lines are so clean and all the colors are nice and bright! I have had bad experiences with getting tattoos from other shops; you don't find out until after ink is on your skin that the tattoo artist is still learning how to tattoo, they leave that part out. Found Maggie's work on instagram and immediately wrote her for an appointment. She got back to me quickly, we had a consultation, and she was able to schedule me for the tattoo about a week later. So fast!The tattoo itself is beautiful and exactly what I was looking for--I can't believe how much it looks like a pen drawing, the details and intricacy of the line work are so superbly well done. It was done in about an hour and a half, and the price was very reasonable. Maggie is a friendly and down-to-earth person who takes her art seriously. Such an amazing place to get a tattoo. Mike is such a friendly and sweet guy. I was super duper nervous about getting my first tattoo (pretty big piece on my arm), but he reassured me that I would be just fine! Talk about amazing customer service. The ambience in the shop is super chill (and cool) and all the other artists that were in the shop were super nice. Mike did my tattoo which turned out so amazing. Being dark in complexion and having a fair amount of scars on my arm, I was afraid that the tattoo wouldn't show up or look right against my scars, but boy was I wrong. Not because it's an amazing place that is full of really, really talented artists that can do anything, but because the artists are genuinely nice and professional. The first time I was here I just came from a kind of unprofessional tattoo session and was kind of scared that it just might be a "thing" in the industry. This place has proved me wrong!Including the owner, Leaf, there are 5 amazing artists to work with. My favorite artist (I'm biased) is Maggie. She's really great and very talented. I've gotten two tattoos from her and can't wait to do more. She will work with you on an idea and so far what she's come up with has been so great! A few things to know: - it's an open space, but they do have screens for more discreet tattooing.- it's cash only- they are mostly a custom tattoo shop, not a lot of flash, unless it's one of those special days, like Halloween, Friday the 13th or something like that.
