Here is one of those hidden secrets of talent rarely found but always sought. I needed a cover-up (a tattoo to cover an old, crappy inking done in adolescence) and I knew next to nothing about tattoos, studios or tattoo artists. I also had strong feelings about not making the same mistake twice. I wanted to be able to look in the mirror ten years from now and not have any regrets, thus I began weeding my way though glitzy ads, "Fake News" and buddies insisting they know someone who knows someone, etc. (Hey, this is New York)I came across Caroline's work at the Devil's Rose, but they were out in Blue Point. For me, in the city, it had to be worth it. Looking further, I found her work online; many people showing off tattoos Caroline had done. After months of looking throughout the city at drawings, stencils and, walls covered with beautiful designs, then at three-ring binders of the stuff they didn't have room for on the walls, seeing the actual finished work was impressive. I looked closer.Caroline is a graduate of a prestigious NYC art school and her passion is tattoos. Her work boasts of her talent without words. Was she the best tattoo artist around? This is New York; they're all the best. She was better, of that I'm sure. Her work has something more, indefinable, but I know when I look in the mirror ten years from now I'm certain I won't have regrets, Indeed, I'll be proud, boastful and even conceited "Hey, look at this tat" as I pull up my sleeve and show off something better, real art.Like I said, this is New York and the best isn't always good enough; you need better.
