Got stationed in ABQ for military service and had been in the market for a tattoo artist for a while. After asking around one name and one shop kept coming up ... Don @ Ace's. I finally went in and talked to him. Not only is Don one of the most professional and down to earth guys I have ever met, he is an extremely talented tattoo artist. Many months later, a total of 6 sessions and a full sleeve later I am 100% satisfied. Don not only covered up a shitty tattoo I got at a young age but turned my whole arm into a work of art! I only have personal experience with Don but just from being in the shop and seeing the work of the other artists I would recommend this shop to anyone. You know how everybody has one shitty tattoo? I got mine here. I got mine done by a guy named Johnny. It's simple script, but somehow it looks awful. I had to get it touched up 5 times. Yes, 5 TIMES, and it still looks blotchy and grey in some parts. The 4th time I went in, Johnny decided that he didn't like the way the "j" looked and just freehanded over it. So now it looks like balls. Thanks. I'm very upset and frankly, pretty embarrassed of my first tattoo. Johnny was very kind and welcoming, which was the only good part of this experience. If I didn't live on the other side of the country now I would go back in and talk to the manager about getting a more experienced artist to fix this. So I walked in this store around November, looking to get one of 2 tattoos I had thought about. The store was clean, awesome art was everywhere. A small cozy shop that was warm and comfortable. I was greeted by Sam Trudell. Sam was respectful, charming, overall a nice guy, very professional. I pitched my ideas to him, gave references, and got a gorgeous drawing within a week. He was willing to spend lots of time revising it and was very patient with me overall. Even through all of the times I was a pain in the ass, he was patient with me. Finally, after 2 reschedules and a late arrival, I was able to sit down to get my first (and probably last) Tattoo. We spent overall 3 hours on the chair (with it not hurting as bad as I thought), me just casually rambling on while he worked, and got a great starter to a project. He elaborated fine details regarding aftercare and healing. Even now it can be considered a finished product, but once it gets color I'm sure it'll look even better. I love it, I love the art, I love it's design, and I'm happy to wear it for the rest of my life. In short, if you want a good tattoo, great artists, and a good environment. Go to Aces Tattoos. Both times I've come here, they've been so welcoming and able to accept a walk-in. Great for a spur of the moment tattoo lover. Kat D'Orazio does amazing watercolor work and she's a fabulous artist too. $40 to hold your spot and $100/hour for the first 3 hours, then she'll go to $80 for any time over that. Got a small one today that only took about an hour. Kat walked me and my partner through the design, cleaned up the design we already had, and we had a great chat during our session. Andrew Hernandez did a WOW! of a tattoo on my forearm. Andrew really concentrates on his work and doesn't get distracted. I showed him my idea for the tat, then he put his "artist eye" on it and came up with a piece I am super proud to show off. I'm a avid fan of tattoo and being so I'm very picky with who I get tattoos from. I have to know their personal style in terms of tattoos. It's also important to ask your artist if they specialize in color or black and Grey's. That could be important in the design of your tattoo. There are a million and one ways to design a skull and for something that will be a part of you and a expression of your individuality, you want to get it right on the first try. The artist I now task with my tattoos is Kat. There are other very talented tattoo artist at Ace but I know Kat on a somewhat personal level from my time as the Dental Hygiene Advisor at UNM. Kat is a great inspiring artist, not with just tattoos but with other mediums as well. Stylistically Kat understands my way of thinking in terms of designing a tattoo. I swear I can think it and she can draw it. That type of relationship and trust is epic in the world of tattoo and it's hard to find sometimes. I've had tattoos done by different artist and while I absolutely love my other tattoos. I can tell you I've NEVER had connection with other artist and I love the feeling of gleeful bliss that I get when I can virtually tell Kat my idea and she can draw it up the way I see it in my head, brilliant! I can't speak about the other artist there, I've never worked with them. BUT I'm positive they are great artist in their own right and I'm sure they do fantastic work. Every time I've gone to Ace they've made me feel welcome and they are very professional and you can tell they love what they do. I had a wonderful time going to Aces Tattoo. The first time I went in to talk to Dorian Gray about the piece I wanted to get done she was so friendly and knew exactly what I was talking about. We set up an appointment for the next week. When I came in to get the work done she had everything ready. I was so pleased that before she even started she explained and showed me that the needles were new and everything is clean.
