I was in search of a tattoo shop around the area and ended up finding Heartland. Talked to an artists named Jake, who was friendly and engaged in what I wanted to get done. All of the artists were friendly, I felt comfortable and I love my tattoo. I've been to a lot of tattoo shops and this is by far my favorite. I will be returning to get more ink. I got a small cover-up piece on my collarbone done by Jake a few weeks back. I was a walk-in; I had never been to the shop before and decided to stop by after reading some reviews online. Jake was super polite, took a look at what I wanted and where I wanted it, and asked me to come back in an hour while he drew it up. I could not be happier with how it turned out! Tattooed by Jake. Started w Jake at a different shop and followed him to Heartland. The entire group is down to earth and genuine. Friendly love to chat about any topic and of course do great work. Highly recommended. I drive roughly 45 min to get work done and Jake is more than accommodating sending ideas or photo of drawing so prepared prior to arrival. Next piece will be done by Rick. By FAR the BEST shop in St. Louis, hands down! For starters, it is the cleanest shop I've ever seen. I'm talking, eat off the floor clean. I have been going to this shop for over a year now and most of my work has been done by Rick but I have had work done by 3 of the 4 guys here. They are all incredibly nice and friendly. Several family members and friends have also gotten work done here. I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat, and I do. Located on Lackland in what might loosely be called downtown Overland (or as I have seen it referred to elsewhere as the land that time forgot...), one might drive right past and not give it a second thought. But if you are in the market for a tattoo, whether it be your first or finishing up your back, I would say that this place is the epitome of a hidden gem. Check out their website for references material, or bring your own. Either way it's low key, unpretentious, has no interest in appealing to the 'hip' crowd, yet welcoming and comfortable. I would recommend an appointment set up ahead of time as opposed to a walk in, but I only live about 3/4 of a mile away so it's very convenient for me and easy to get in fairly quickly. I believe in supporting local businesses whenever possible, and this place deserves a look, especially if you want professional, clean work done by great people. Highly recommended.Read Less

Tattooist going by the name of House - if you use this guy you need to make sure that all of the detail (including the colors and their placement) that you want are in the transfer drawing. DO NOT allow him to embellish it without first showing you what he plans before he actually applies the ink. He designed a line drawing tattoo from a color photo I provided that I wanted to have enhanced with muted color accents. The drawing was mediocre and I should have stopped the process right there, but he seemed to know his business and I trusted him to do a good job. The outline of the tattoo was barely passable, but I expected that he would clean it up with the coloring. Then he started on what should have been the muted color accents. He did not ask where to put them and when he was done it looked horrible! He used bold colors and put them in the most awkward places of the drawing. House agreed with my opinion that it looked like crap but seemed to insinuate that it was my fault - though, looking back, he didn't ask my guidance on what / where / how to put the colors. I asked what he recommended to help it look better and he said to fill in the rest of the coloring to 'complete' the tattoo. At the initial appointment I had stated very clearly to him that I did not want a full color tat of this image! When it was done and he asked how I liked it, I let him know that I wasn't thrilled with the result - he said some extremely rude things then started to clean his station. I went to the station next to his to visit with my friend, who was also getting tattooed, while I waited for him to finish cleaning and present me with my final bill. While my back was to him he left the shop without another word to me. House did not give me any aftercare instructions, did not collect the balance of the fee, did not show his face in the shop at all for the rest of my time there. I had to go to one of the artists in the shop to finalize my transaction. I had heard good things about Heartland Tattoo and the artists here but House's work is a big disappointment and his behavior was incredibly unprofessional.This tattoo is just above my ankle, on the inside of my leg. It is now shorts weather and I have no choice but to show it until it heals and I can afford to hire a tattoo artist to cover it up. This is being a very expensive lesson for me - hopefully someone can learn from my mistake. Read Less

A friend of mine recommended Heartland Tattoo and I must say I love this place. Very clean, very through with your ideas and exactly how you want your tattoo. The prices are so reasonable for the fantastic work as well. Jake did my purple lotus tattoo and I love it. It's perfect and he took time to really give me the look i wanted. I also had a music note tattooed behind my ear and I swear I didn't feel a thing. Jake has majic hands! I love the caring, friendly and well trained artists. It's clean but the artist - especially their black n white guy - leaves alot to be desired...  1st after making the appointment & showing up he got annoyed because he forgot & proceeded to be a real jerk... I always get tattooed here! The guys are all super nice, super talented, and hilarious. The place is extremely clean and comfortable, too! I get tattooed by Ryan, the quality of work he gives, the level of professionalism, and his eye for detail is second to none. Just visited Heartland Tattoo for my first time to get some work done by Ryan Henerey. Ryan has done a number of my tattoos and I used to go to him at Cheap Trix. The new shop is not only beautifully put together but also everyone there was so friendly and kind. The place is clean, warm and inviting. Weather you are there for your first tattoo or your fiftieth, the artists truly make it an enjoyable and memorable experience. Highly recommended. Five stars.
