I'm a bit of a tattoo snob... not everyone will agree with my likes or dislikes for sure. I've seen the work of most of the artists in KC. I use nationally recognized tattoo artists to compare the various tattooing styles to. This is how I rate my tattoos and whether I think an artist is just an artist, or a master of his/her craft.
There are two guys at Surreal tattoo that I have familiarized myself with. Tyler Moody and Rick James (yeah that really is his name, and who doesn't want a tattoo by Rick James?)
Both of these guys, without a doubt, are among the best in the KC area. I'm always looking for an artist who creates consistently amazing tattoos. Stuff that you wouldn't be surprised to find in a magazine... or even say to yourself... WHOA, that SHOULD be in a magazine. And you may know, every once in a while you see a guy crank out a crazy good tattoo. But then you look at his other stuff and it just doesn't meet the same caliber.
These two guys are not "one and done' artists. Their tattoos are real deal art. Tyler has tattooed my wife and the outcome is beautiful. I will refrain from posting it as it is personal (nothing dirty, get your mind out of the gutter!) Man he knocked it out of the ballpark! The colors, the custom job. it is just spot on, really probably better than what we were thinking.
And in a few days Rick is getting ready to do one of my dream tattoos with the Arch Angel Michael from Revelation 20. I never really thought I would find a guy that I think does good enough work to make this tattoo a reality here in KC. I thought I would have to go abroad. I think Rick has what it takes though. If you are looking for some serious ink slinging skill, come check these guys out.
Also, I am not saying the other folks at Surreal are bad. I just haven't studied their work as much. It's always good conversation in there too. Real laid back. They will keep it clean if you ask. This is a top notch parlor/studio here in KC. Don't overlook these guys.

I love the studio and the artists and how professional they are and how it has such a great laid back vibe and is so comfortable & welcoming. My first time here was a while back when Devan did a couple of amazing tattoos!!! She is absolutely a pro and I love her talent. Today I went to see Courtney and she did my brows and I am so happy how they look!!! I am not a makeup person and definitely never did anything much with my brows. After seeing her work I realized thar br...ows really do frame your face and make a difference so I made an appointment. First off as soon as I met her I loved her and trusted her because I realized she knows her shit! Since I have NEVER really done much to my brows and they were minimal it was important to me that they look "natural" and full and not be too dark. She explained the process and how the pigment will fade pretty significantly after the 2 week healing period and that is why you go back for a touchup after 6 weeks so I expected that I may be a bit shocked with them when she finished since I didn't really have brows to begin with. When she was done and I saw them they looked amazing and I could not believe what a difference it made in my appearance!!!! I now have brows and they look natural and the color she custom blended for my coloring is perfect!!!! And I'm writing this only several hours after she did them and even with a little redness (which is normal of course) they look AMAZING!!! If you have wanted great natural looking brows that you can wake up with and not do a thing to them then go see Courtney!!!!!!! Ver mais

I'm very picky on who I will consider even touching me with needles. But with Justin Brown, I have no worries. He opens everything in front of me, sterlizes everything. I will forever go back to see Justin for tattoos & piercings.!

I've visited this location several times and I'm more impressed each time! My tattoos have all been done by Artist Justin and he's the BEST! His lettering is so on point, and he's a barrel of laughs every time. It's really awesome going into a shop and not feeling awkward or like your ideas are lame/stupid. This most recent visit was really special to me. I lost my brother 2 years ago and I found an old card that he wrote his name in. It wasn't the cleanest or easiest thing to do, but Justin executed tattooing his signature beautifully. Now I have my brother with me literally always. Justin didn't even blink when I asked him if he could do it, he accepted immediately. Seriously, this place is GREAT! I haven't personally been tattooed by the other artists, but I've seen their work and I've been in while they're working. Not a single negative thing to say about anything/one! I'll definitely be back in the future.

My tattoo turned out exactly like I envisioned it, and I had the best time talking to Devan while she worked her magic. The shop is clean and comfortable and the staff is professional and make you feel like there's no place else in KC you'd want to go. I couldn't recommend it more highly!
