I came in and asked for what I wanted, owner said "it's impossible" and had me leave. Didn't try to compromise or tell me what would need to be done in order to try to make the tattoo possible. Went down the street to Revelation for my second tattoo ever and asked for the exact same design. The drawing was done in less than 48 hours and on my arm in 6. I went to the Illustrated Man this weekend to get my first tattoo. It's one that has a lot of meaning to me and I made sure that they understood that. Jack drew mine up and made some adjustments to make it look the best that he could. While he was doing my tattoo, he talked me through what he was doing, which was a huge comfort to me, not being able to see what he was doing and it being my first. I went to Stan to get a tattoo on my wrist and paid $100 ( a very small tattoo)and I asked him to draw a tattoo up for my back and said he needed a $40 deposit and now that's gone because I will never go there again and tell all me friends not to! Some lines were thicker and a blow out mark that can't be fixed. I made an appt to get it fixed a month later and he wAs busy with someone else when he told me to come in. I waited an hour and finally gave up. Came in again and he wasn't there when he told me to come in. I ended up going to kc ink and will never go anywhere else! I went here to get my right half sleeve done. I already have a left half sleeve so I assumed the artists here knew I was serious. I had my idea already too. I was not greeted as I walked in. After a few minutes I was finally told that a specific artist would help me and be with me in a minute. I looked through his portfolio and I was not impressed. He finally helped me and unfortunately I don't remember his name bc I'd tell everyone to stay away from him. My last sleeve took 12 hours and cost about 800. This clown tells me he can do it in 3 hours for 300 dollars. I said and I quote," that's really fast." He says I work fast. That's an unrealistic # of hours. Well I made an appt with him. I enter a week later on my appt date and time just to not be greeted again and to find my artist in the middle of a tattoo, a big tattoo. He says he'll be done in 5 min. OK. I wait for 20 min. Still no where close to done. Remember this is the really fast guy. So I ask him again I he's close to done. Completely ignores me. I storm out and as I leave say fuck this place you just lost out on my business. I'm in a profession with people with a lot of tattoos. I'll be getting more. I wish the owner knew how his people. Treat customers. This place lost out on all my money and as many people as I can tell not to go there. I get asked a lot where I got my ink. Fuck this place. Go to irezumi. Oh and the work space is crowded and there are no walls. DO NOT get ink here. I'd give 0 stars if I could. Read Less

I had been contemplating my second tattoo for months, so when I played hooky from work, I knew it was time.  I went in on a Tuesday around lunchtime thinking it would be the best time for walk-in.  I spoke with Jack, who said we could get started right away.  At that point, I was kind-of hoping for a wait so I could puss out.  Jack came right out and said they may seem pricey but you get what you pay for.  I was actually more comfortable knowing they weren't cheap.  If I wanted a cheap tattoo, I'd go to that guy in the unmarked van.  I knew what I wanted (my maiden name on my inner wrist done in script).  He drew it up quickly and it was exactly what I wanted!  Not too big or showy but classy & detailed.  It only took about 5 minutes (seemed like 15 because I'm a wuss) and he bandaged me up & sent me on my way!  I will definitely go back for any future tattoo needs. In my opinion the illistarted man is not all it is thought out to be! When I had first walked into the studio I had asked for John Monk, he was recomended to me, the man replied "I haven't seen him in a year, and I hope he is dead". "Okay, and you don't know where I could find him at?", I replied. "No!", he said. I had heard of another tattoo shop down the road about a mile from The Illustrated Man. THE ILLUSTRATED MAN is the best, im getting my whole arm done by john monk and he is the best tattoo guy in K.C. he drew all of it right on my arm and tattooed it. when people see it they are blown away. i would recomend him to anyone who wants a tattoo. he is also a very nice guy although he is really busy and most of the time booked up a couple of weeks in advance but for sure worth the wait. i wouldnt go anywhere else!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got my first tattoo here and it was a pleasant experience.  The staff were very professional and very helpful.  A bit overpriced I think, but not too bad.  I believe this studio was a house at some point--each artist had his own little room.  I liked this very much; I'd much rather have a little privacy then being out in the open where everyone in the building can gawk at you while you're getting tattooed.
