It was my moms first time getting a tattoo and Ben was so awesome with her! She’s 61 and was somewhat nervous but he put her mind at ease and was very patient with her! I have had a few done myself but never here! I will definitely be going back for another. I liked the chill atmosphere it really helped with my anxiety I get before every tattoo. Got my first one here yesterday! Ben did a fantastic job I was so nervous! He helped it to be a great experience. Everyone is really friendly and the price wasn't as expensive as we thought it would be and I'll definitely be going back. Hubby is now jealous and wanted his own lol oh yes and they have a waiting area with comfy seating which was a plus since my husband and infant was with me. I've been coming here since I had my first tattoo at 18. The artist are great, personable, and talented. The prices are good the place is nice and you can usually get in when you want. The artist can get a good idea of what you want and draw up something nice, it might even pass your expectations. The artist have been doing this for a while. The music and conversation is great while your trying not to think about the pain . I highly recommend this place for anyone and anything they even do piercings. Read Less

Mitch was so awesome! I emailed him and told him what I was wanting and he was very quick to respond and set up my appointment. I was tatted by shennon and the work was decent. But she gave me a $75 tattoo for $160 smh and my dumb ass paid for it. But the shop is coo just make sure you don't let them fuck you on the price. If you feel they are overcharging you walk out and go to someone else or a diffrent shop. Read Less

Benjamin was amazing as always. This was my second experience at A1, and it was as great as the first time. Benjamin took my ideas and made me a beautiful piece! Another bit about this shop that I really appreciate, the artists greet the walk-ins in a very timely manner. If they have to pause their work to do it, they do. I have been in MANY shops where I walk-in and wait for quite a while before being acknowledged then told to wait anyway. A1 has A+ knowledgeable, helpful artists that are extremely honest. If they can't do it, they will tell you...and also explain why. If they feel that a placement is a bad call, they will tell you and suggest an alternative. Benjamin Carlson is fantastic. I went in and had my nose pierced by Richie and he did a FANTASTIC job. Everything was CLEAN and he was very careful with the entire process. He went above and beyond to inform me about every aspect, from the positioning of the piercing to how to keep it clean. He was easy going and inviting to talk to. I've had six tattoos done here, by several artists, however my favorite for sure is Mitch. He's a great artist and legitimately nice guy. He takes plenty of time to understand what you're looking for and is happy to give an artistic opinion if there's something you're not sure about. No design is stupid to him, and he makes an effort to talk to you the whole time. Another bonus is he has a super light hand, the most painless of my tattoos have come from Mitch. I've gotten work done at tons of shops in KC, but hadn't visited A-1 until my favorite artist, Ben Carlson, joined them. I went in on Sunday, and was really impressed. It's a clean shop, big enough to house a nice variety of artists, not so big that they lose the intimacy that makes a place comfortable. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do, I thought about adding a few small pieces to my sleeve-in-progress, but Ben showed me some really beautiful original art that made me reconsider. I've always done relatively small things, and didn't know if I could handle something so big, but he really knows what he's doing, and made it as easy as possible for me to take it all. He is super-clean, and he educates from start to finish.I really have no proof (because all of the massive amount of information I now know about piercings I learned directly from Richie) but my intuition tells me that he does everything exactly right. I went with my best friend to get her nose pierced on her birthday. We were super happy and having a great day so we were talkative and giggly, which is apparently the wrong way to be at this shop. One tattoo artist asked if we were okay because we were laughing..and the piercer looked and seemed bored. He had no excitement or joy for his profession. I went here to get my tattoo finished by Destroy Troy.  Troy is a great tattoo artist with a unique style, though he can do any style you choose.  The shop is small and not super friendly other than him, and hes only doing a short cameo here.  He designed a tattoo for my boyfriend from an idea and it turned out great, and he finished coloring mine in and it went well and quickly.  I recommend Troy to anyone!! I have 7 tattoos currently. My artist retired and that is the only reason I decided to go anywhere else. I went to A1 and was blown off from the minute I walked in the door. I finally got Brandon (?) to talk to me and listen to my design. He said it would be no problem. He quoted me a price which was extremely high, but I didn't mind because I wanted my work done. After he finished I was horrified. It looked nothing like what we had discussed and I didn't like it at all. I ended up going to a different shop and having a cover up piece done. Illustrated Man is the only place to go! Don't trust A1 with something that is going to permanently going to be on your body!!! Read Less
