I got this, my first tattoo, at the age of 41, it took me awhile to decide what I wanted. I couldn't be happier with the experience or the results! Jacoba never made me feel less than for this being my first tattoo. From day one all the way through Jacoba provided excellent customer service, which seems rare these days. Knowing I could count on her made the whole process easier for me. I chose Jacoba because I wanted to get a realistic tattoo of my cat and saw one of her stunning examples on her instagram page.We met a few months in advance and she walked me through the process and then continued to gently push me for a better picture of what was ultimately my tattoo. I had the absolute BEST experience at Jackalope today. The shop was clean and the staff was insanely friendly. I have had three other artists do work on me and this was by far the best experience I've ever had. Emi started work on my very large thigh piece and was a joy to work with. She designed an amazing tattoo for me, and when I asked if it could be made larger with some additional floral pieces added to it, she didn't even bat an eye. She took the time to make sure I was 100% happy with what was being put on my body and had me talking and laughing through the entire 4.5hrs of line work we did today! I had a good experience for my first visit to Jackalope. My artist was Nora, and they did a great job with a memorial piece I had. I felt realxed in the shop as it had a calm atmosphere. It's hard to review a tattoo shop because it's so much about connection to the artist and the art, but what I can say is that I have 6 tattoos, each one was done a different shop.  This by far has been the best experience with regards to personality, custom work, quality, planning, response time and just general shop vibe.  1) it's an all girl shop- which it's just a nice change I guess.  2) I'm a bigger girl and I can sit in the freaking tattoo chair fairly comfortably so that's something.  3) all the artists there are amazing, every piece of art, every tattoo, every portfolio I've looked at left me staring with my mouth open in awe.  It was super hard to even choose an artist in the first place- because they are all amazing.  But I chose Amo and I'm glad I did.  She captured what I wanted and even more, more than I even realized. 3.5) Super flexible with my needs- this tattoo I'm currently getting is really emotional for me, and I had like a break down in the middle of it, she was super chill and we booked shorter appointments going forward- i.e I guess they are used to emotional girls and their emotional tattoos  4) they book out super far, which I think speaks to the quality and demand of their work, so if you want a good piece - look at the pages, see who's taking appts, then email the artist- and go here, nuff said. As a researcher, I thought long and hard before I chose Jackalope as the studio for my very first tattoo. I was happy to find a salon with all female artists and last week on a whim I called and much to my delight I was lucky enough to get a cancellation appointment for the next day.  Of course I had read each artist's bio and was ecstatic when I learned my appointment was with Emi.I wasn't scared, per se, but I did see my hands trembling as I drove to this South Minneapolis fun, funky salon.  Emi has a way of assuaging any fear and was kind and gentle and proved to be a very talented artist. So completely impressed with this tattoo shop. They are booked out, so I would recommend  checking out the artists and reaching out sooner rather than later.I moved from Southern California (I'm asked all the time why I'd leave and honestly if you've never sat in 405 traffic you don't know traffic) last year. I just got a new tat and realized I still hadn't reviewed Jackalope, where I got my last work done! So, backing way up, I found Jackalope several winters ago when I visited a tattoo convention in Minneapolis. I collected a lot of cards and looked through many portfolios that night, and then Jackalope rose to the top of my list several months later when I looked at even more portfolios online. Everyone at Jackalope is talented so it was hard to narrow down which artist I wanted to work with. But I eventually chose Bambi (who turned out to be the owner). Bambi is a busy lady so it was awhile before I could get a consultation, and a couple months after that before I had my first sitting. But it was worth the wait (and long bus rides!).Bambi was very helpful in piecing together many elements to make a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing half sleeve. I trusted her to make many decisions (and even freehand a few things!!), but she was also open to suggestion as the piece progressed.  She was also fun to work with and easy to talk to. I got to know the shop pretty well since my half sleeve was completed over the course of six months.  Jackalope is an all female shop, which is not why I went there, but it was definitely a change from the all or primarily male tattoo parlors I'm accustomed to (this was only the third time I've been tattooed by a chick).  That being said, there were male customers and this is in no way an anti-male environment. I chose a shop closer to home for my last piece but I would definitely go back to Jackalope.  On the 14 and 46 bus lines. Sisters Sludge coffee shop is just down the block. Read Less

I wish I could rate them as they were my first choice to get my first tattoo at. It was a tattoo to honor someone very special to me- and I was so excited I would have done it the day I walked into the shop. The front desk representative was very nice to talk with, she encouraged me to email a certain artist. I did right away. Unfortunately, the tattoo artist told me that my design would not reflect her portfolio so she would not take me as a client. This left me super disappointed and feeling very disregarded. At least the front desk representative (who looked at my idea) could have informed me that it would not be taken - I would have then understood. But unless your tattoo will be (quote from the artist) "mostly painterly, large scale work"... then either go to one of their walk in days where you can get something quick or find somewhere else. My experience specifically at Jacalope back in December was awesome, with the artist Katie being respectful and kind. I left being satisfied with my tattoo. Naturally, the healing process left my tattoo with some noticeable flaws. What has been extremely challenging is that after a decent amount of efforts to contact the studio since then I have not been able to hear back about a touch up. I completely understand that because she is a talented artist she is booked up for a long time, but some response with at least an estimate of when I could get my touch up would have been reassuring considering I was supposed to go in around January and it's June now. I ended up having to reach out and pay a different artist to do the touch up out of fear of never hearing back from Jackalope. Read Less

I've been coming here for almost a year now and working specifically with Jacoba. The artwork she has and is doing on me is amazing and better then I could have hoped for. Another great thing about her is she isn't afraid to tell you if she thinks someone else would do better work for what you (the customer) is wanting out on your body. I love that if she doesn't feel comfortable with the artwork that is being asked for she is very willing to direct you to someone she thinks is gonna give you a better tattoo. That right there shows that she is more concerned about the artwork rather then making a quick buck. So I recommend stopping into the place and seeing if her or any of the other amazingly talented women would work out for the style of tattoo you are wanting and get some amazing artwork done on you like I am continuing with them to do. I am not new to tattoos but today was my first trip (and certainly not my last trip) to Jackalope Tattoo. I have been wanting to go to the small tattoo shop over in the Powderhorn neighborhood for sometime now and I finally had the opportunity today. I really liked how easy going and friendly the staff was. Shop owner Bambi made it really easy to try to fit me in on a walk in Sunday as early as possible despite being booked up until 8 in the evening and lengthy bus commute. Fortunately for me, Mo had an early afternoon opening and was able to fit me into her schedule. The shop is small but it is clean and fun to look at with a lot of art work by Bambi and the occasional jackalope, the store's mascot. Mo was super fun to work with, easily my favorite artist who has done work on my body. I love the results of her work. I definitely plan on returning to Jackalope for all my tattoos in the near future. Read Less

I chose Jackalope Tattoo based off these previous Yelp reviews and checking out the artists' portfolios.  I went with Jacoba because I liked her mix of lines and abstract and the tattoo I had in mind had feathers and I saw she had done some awesome feather work.  For my first ever tattoo, I could not have had a better experience.  The consultation was easy and Jacoba was really excited about my idea and how she could make it better.  When I came in for my appointment, her drawing was exactly what I had hoped for (but better).  The shop is clean and small and all the women who work there are incredibly friendly.  Jacoba's pre-tattoo advice was great (hydrate, lotion, eat protein before coming) and I was totally prepared for the work that was going to be done.  The music playing in the shop was perfect and exactly what I would have listened to on my own headphones.  I really just felt like I was in the right place with the right artist to have this design done after 4 years of thinking.  I'm already planning my next tattoo!  I highly recommend this tattoo shop and Jacoba! Katie tattoos me personally, but I would feel confident recommending any of the incredibly talented women who work here. I can't recommend it enough. It can be so intimidating walking into a tattoo salon, especially as a young woman, but Jackalope is completely different. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, the decor is cheerful and quirky, and the artists are talented and kind.Katie has tattooed me thrice so far and I am returning for a fourth in August. I have gotten so many compliments on her work and always recommend her for a great experience. She does such unique and beautiful linework and she is a master at making people feel at ease while they're in the chair. I'm an artist myself, but Katie has consistently exceeded expectations with what little direction I gave her in a way that blows my mind. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. I was in awe the second I stepped through the door. There are beautiful watercolor paintings all over the shop with DINOSAURS integrated into them and jackalope toys or stuffed animals all over too. What's not to love? It felt like this place was made for me (I have a ridiculous love for dinosaurs and had pet bunnies that I adored. Not kidding.)I got my 2nd tattoo here (with Katie) and have another appointment coming up to update my back piece (with Emi). My husband got his 1st tattoo here last month, my best friend got an amazing update on her back piece of her Archaeoptryx, and another college friend has tattoos coming up as well. Addictive? YES. My 2nd tattoo was (in part) an homage to my grandmother. She lived with my family growing up and was like a 2nd mother to me. I got a lyric from a popular children's song in Vietnamese. Katie (my artist) asked me all the right questions and we even had an awesome talk about cultural appropriation. She talked about how they sometimes get people who come in and want Chinese or Japanese characters without knowing what they mean (I reassured her that I am fluent in Vietnamese) or because they think "exotic" equals "cool". Meh. She talked about how she usually just asks people a lot of questions and get them to really think about why they want these characters or not. I am sometimes wary of people's cultural competence when it comes to Asian stuff, but Jackalope Gets It and I so appreciate that. These ladies are smart, nice, and the kind of people I aspire to be. Hands down the best customer service I've ever had. For it being my first tattoo Emi was insanely patient and respectful. From the beginning idea stage staff answered all my questions over Facebook, email, and phone. The amount of time and attention that was given to a potential customer was incredible. Never have I felt such an openness like that where I could ask any and all questions. Emi did a fabulous design and with email exchanges we created a piece that I am proud of. She was prompt in her responses, and before my appointment emailed me the design to ensure it was what we were going for. The shop was clean, open, and everyone was friendly. I'm not a newcomer to tattoos or other body mods, and I can safely say that this shop has far exceeded my expectations.... as well as most shops I have been in or worked in.... and I've had the pleasure (most times) of experiencing shops across oregon, wisconsin, northern California and a whole lot of the shops in the twin cities area. While I can't speak to the other shops work always, I can safely say that the Jackalope ladies are the friendliest staff around.Beyond that, the arm piece that Katie did for me is AMAZING. If youre curious, my tattoo is the one with han and leia in front of the death star in the photos above. surprisingly, we DIDN'T have a whole lot of rough Draft work on sketching. I described what I was thinking, Katie nailed it first time with minor tweaks (we're talking one or two lines). But if I would have needed to scrap the whole thing and start from scratch, well I would have felt comfortable doing just that. Maybe she would have hated me for it.... but I never would have been able to tell. Professional until the end. And SUPER fun conversationalist. Totally put me at ease.go. You won't be disappointed. Bambi gave me great after-care instructions and answered questions I had during the healing time, via email.
