I got my nose piercing here for my 18th birthday and the people at the lovely monkey made it a great expirience. They were so friendly that when I went to change my nose piercing and failed I proceeded to go back and they changed it for me and then after that piercing fell out I returned again after not being able to put the original back in and again they did it for me. My experience at the un"lovely monkey" is an unpleasant one that I'm reminded with everyday, seeing as how I have to look at it on my arm. I picked a SIMPLE yin yang tattoo because you would THINk it would be easy enough for an artist to do, and I am into ancient Chinese philosophy. Not only was the circle NOT a circle, the entire tattoo was done in an outline gun instead of having some shading on the black portion of the yin yang. Even I know there should be shading within a tattoo, and you shouldn't torture someone's skin with an outline gun. It healed horribly because of this and there are patches now. I called and tried to get the touch up done which was supposed to be free, but the artist is no longer in town! I was told this by a snobby woman who told me the logistical bullcrap contract. If they said,"hey, come in, it will only take fifteen minutes to fix it, no charge" I might of contemplated not writing this review. I love supporting local business... But not this one! My wife has had breast cancer and she has been very depressed. Somone suggested going miles away and getting a nipple tattoo. I was very confused. we met with the owner to talk about it. I had the thought in my mind a dingy dirty tattoo show. I have to say i was embarrassed and shocked to admit i was totally wrong. This shop is nicer than a Hollywood salon. the whole experience made us totally conferable and relaxed. They treated my wife so well she has had a total life change, her depression has done a complete flip. she has more confidence than i have ever seen. I surprised her. When she was getting her nipple tattoo i got my own tattoo of her and our kids. Both our tattoos are so lifelike. Clean shop but unprofessional tattoo artists - one of the five star reviews here is from one of the artists themselves?? One artist did a cover up for me that didn't cover up the old tattoo and dodged my calls about issues with the piece. That was after breaking three previous appointments to do the piece - two appointments were canceled the day of. Another artist botched a huge piece on my best friends arm right before her wedding. She went back there three times to get it fixed and it still looked splotchy. She ended up going somewhere else. I recommend that tbh if you want excellent work. Read Less

Went to Lovely Monkey for a good size piece on my arm, almost half sleeve sized. It turned out amazing. Bri Howard was the artist. This was my 8th tattoo and 5th artist in Michigan. By far Bri cared more than any other artist I've ever used. I'm pretty sure she wanted it to turn out even better than I did! Which is good because sometimes I've had artists just doing a job and not caring as much. Bri has so much attention to detail and does incredible work, especially for being a young artist. I found Lovely Monkey because of their fundraiser for Planned Parenthood and drove out from Ann Arbor to get a small piece done on my back. After Miss Jamie tattooed me that day, I knew I wanted her to do the cover-up I'd been thinking about for over a year. She worked with me to get the design just how I wanted it, accepting pictures by email and then sketching directly onto my arm for approval and tweaks. Both tattoos came out perfectly. Jamie is a talented artist and is kn...owledgeable and kind. I would particularly recommend her to anyone looking for a first tattoo. She is very considerate of pain and makes clients feel totally comfortable asking questions or requesting a break. I have several tattoos but none are as beautiful as the ones Bri has given me at Lovely Monkey. Her art is AMAZING, the ink is incredible, and the shear talent out of this shop is unbelievable. My other tattoos are from some of the best artists in Portland and San Fransisco and they are nothing compared to mine from Bri. Her talent is out of this world. The was an amazing experience! I've been to several different tattoo parlors all over Ypsi and Ann Arbor, and this is by far the best experience I have ever had! I had a very large rib tattoo done and Robert Casper did such an amazing job I almost cried when I saw it. I can't say enough lovely things about this shop! The atmosphere is cool and inviting; sometimes I feel a little unsure about going into a tattoo shop as a lady alone, but everyone that I met there was super warm and inviting and put me at ease. Bri, the gal who did my tattoo, was professional and quick, my design was simple and small and she suggested a cool way to shade it in that I hadn't thought of when I was coming up with the design. She was knowledgeable and made sure I was fully informed and pleased with the size, placement, color, etc. before we moved forward. The artwork that the tattoo artists have up in their space is testament to the quality and unique talent they possess and I will definitely be returning here in the future!
