Went into the shop & spoke to an artist about doing a cover up tattoo. He agreed & I gave them my info & had to pay a $50 deposit for him to draw it out then told me to give him a couple weeks. Ok, cool. Two weeks went by & no call. Then three, then four. I called & asked to speak to him & was told he would call me back. Never did. Called again another week later, no call back. Then I called and asked if I could get my money back.. they said they would talk to him and get back to me. Surprise.. they never did. For what I know all the artists are great. However Nick is cocky and needs to learn some communication skills. Went there mid August, it's now the end of December, and still haven't heard anything from him about the drawing for my 8+ hour sleeve I wanted him to do. The cleanest tattoo shop I’ve ever been too. The receptionist was so funny and friendly. Nick the tattoo artist was amazing. It was my friends first time and he treated her amazingly. He was curtisous and wanted to make sure she was completely comfortable with her decision. We were walk ins on a time limit and they worked with us and got us in and out with time to spare. I wanted to love this place, I really did. Service was polite and helpful, and I did have to go back three times total because I wasn't sure what I was doing (first visit). With the work that I got done, my artist was great. However, I feel like the place overcharged my deposit/downpayment + the final estimated cost, which I paid in FULL, even though it took less than half the time initially estimated and quoted. And it was a small simple design on both wrists. When I got home, I realized my right wrist's design was flipped the wrong way, no big to everyone else because it looks the same either way (simple piece), but to me a big bummer because it was very symbolic. I almost cried. Actually I did a little. And I DID tell the guy which way both hands should look, from top to bottom. I did call them and let them know that I felt way overcharged for how short it took and still paid, and my art wasn't exactly as I had specified. Don't expect to not overspend on a tattoo here. The prices are pretty ridiculous for simple tattoos. That being said, I don't think I would have went anywhere else. I've been to a couple tattoo studios, but none even come close to matching the quality of Mos Eisley's. During my consultation, Shane worked with me to figure out exactly what I wanted in my tattoo. When he sent me the sketch via email, I was amazed at how great it was. When I drove to Grand Rapids to get my tattoo, Shane took a few extra minutes with me to go over color, and ensured that I was comfortable through the whole experience. The tattooing went awesome, and his atte...ntion to detail definitely showed. He even stayed a little after closing time to finish up most of my color. Not only did he pay close attention to detail, but I'm pretty sure he went through half a box of gloves throughout the whole process in efforts to keep things as neat and clean as possible. In December, I sent a message asking for help with a cover up. I was asked to send in pictures and what I wanted covered up. After immediately sending pictures, I set up a consultation for a week later. When I arrived, I was greeted by Shane. He asked me to then resend all the pictures of interest and didn't seem to have any idea of what the price, time frame or designs to do. Umm.. okay. He tells me 1-2 weeks for a design and to contact him if I haven't heard from him. 2 wee...ks later, I contacted the office and he wasn't in. Left a message and never received a call back. A few days later, I sent a message thru the website. I got a response back on Monday and was told the design will be ready by today and to call to make sure it was done and he was in before stopping by. I called and they are unsure if it's done and he's not in the office until Monday.. Are you joking? A month later and I have no progress on this. Very unprofessional. I'll be going elsewhere for my art work. Thanks anyways. UPDATE 2/8/17: After receiving an apology phone call from my review and awful experience, I decided to give Shane, and Mos Eisley's another try. Let me tell you.. that was the worst idea! Over the last 3 weeks, I have been in the office over a handful of times trying to get the tattoo I want just right. I'm not being picky, but as we all know.. tattoos are permanent! I'd like to love it before getting it, ya know? I saw Shane himself once, the rest of my visits was reviewing the design and on paper trying to transcribe what I wanted. Last week, the one time I saw him personally since my consultation, we made huge progress on the design. I ask for price and he literally DOUBLED IT from what we originally talked about. He said he'd make some adjustments.. Literally so close to making it absolutely amazing, I get a call saying it's ready to be viewed! I go in tonight to see if and it's no where to be found. No where? Seriously? You called me 3 days ago and said to come in to see it. Either your front office staff has no communication together or you yet again, accidentally took it with you.. so much for having a good reputation as the co-owner? I don't get it. I took my name off the books and will not be returning. Clearly nobody pays attention to this and just goes with whatever. Word of mouth is your biggest enemy. The guy who helped design my tattoo, Brantley, is an exceptional artist. I had a rough idea of what I wanted, and he definitely helped bring it to life. I really like that the staff makes suggestions and works with you to make sure you get a quality, lasting piece. They even follow up with calls and emails to verify the time for your appointment. I got my tattoo here over six years ago, and it still looks great. My artist was Joe Salois, and he really made sure I got something I cared about. My only drawback was that place was a little pricey, but not a huge complaint considering you get what you pay for! They are very clean in this shop, and the staff is super friendly. I spent a good month or two researching tattoo parlors in the Grand Rapids area and decided that this was going to be my place as I thoroughly enjoyed their work. I went in to get a quote on a cancer ribbon tattoo on Saturday and came out with a quote and an appointment with Brantley. I went in for my appointment and a consultation for another tattoo a few days later and came out with a beautiful tattoo that represents me. He had to blend a couple colors together to get what I wanted but it turned out perfect. The place is clean and every artist has their own booth to do their work, so I felt comfortable and safe getting tatted there. I will be going back for my next tattoo that is being drawn up. I think this shop is just lazy. I lived in LA for the past 6 years and I love tattoos so I would stop by into random shops and strike up a conversation with the artists and bounce off ideas. I've been to many from Venice beach to Hollywood, from world-renowned shops to the up and comers, they were always very open, friendly and super flexible/accommodating. I stopped by into two here so far and it was like an immediate aura of arrogance and intimidation. In GR it seems like you earn a few trophies and you no longer have to put in any effort into your art/designs. I got my first one done here many years ago so I figured I'd be fine.   Anyway, from the moment I walked in, I was made to feel like what I wanted was super difficult and far-fetched - first they didn't like that the font I wanted it in doesn't come in computer font style so they can just type it up real quick, print and slap it on me - they would actually have to sketch it out themselves - GASP!  That's what I pay you for, aren't you the "artist?" I want two 1 inch icons (super easy) and one quote in this specific font. It's really not that difficult. I was quoted two weeks time for an initial sketch (lol), came in to view only 1 icon and the quote. I get that a roman numeral 7 is really easy but I'm not going to just get a tattoo without seeing what it looks like initially--this is permanent. I want some shading in there I don't just want a jetblack outline and I'm not going to get something that will last forever on a whim. That's why I asked for the drawings up front. So the fact that he didn't even have that drawn up was a red flag. Then apparently they can only go so small with the letters because it'll fade over time - ok fine. If you say I can't fit it on my shoulder and I need a new location, then that new location will be down my spine. I don't want or like any other spots and the ones I do I already have something in mind for those locations. They proceeded to try to talk me out of my 2nd desired location the entire time because it meant they would have to re-draw the quote to read vertically instead of horizontally. Oh no, more WORK, can't have that. That is a HUGE red flag you guys - pushing your client into getting something they clearly won't be happy with long-term because it'll be easier and require less work from you is just something I cannot respect much less trust in a tattoo artist. First of all, you would have to re-draw it regardless because it doesn't look anything like what I asked for, never mind the location. The letters on my print out are ancient and imperfect, they look handwritten instead of the perfectly even in length/width and symmetrical print you'd see on a billboard today. When I pointed this out, they proceeded to argue with me back and forth saying they just went by based on what was on my print-out. Ummmmm.. no you didn't because then it would actually resemble the font on my print out, not look like a perfect size 20 Arial Font across the board. Guess I'll just have to wait til I'm in LA or Seattle again to get my tats done because if this is GR's "best" shop, that is just scary. Read Less

Walked in on a whim at about 5:15pm (the close at eight). My friend and I both got pieces of the back of our calves, mine included some color and hers was all black with some shading. I was leery to go here because I've heard this place can be a bit intimidating. Guess what? Don't believe most of what you hear and less of what you read. I didn't find a single unfriendly or intimidating person in the bunch. I went in to get curved barbell in my rook to replace a CBR (originally was not done here). I ended up stretching my lobes as well. George was very personable and made me feel at ease the whole time. I can see why so many people end up going here. The reviews don't lie!  There's a damn good reason the lobby of this shop is festooned with trophies and plaques -- they're friggin' good at what they do.I got my first tattoo here in 2005 and just got my 3rd done there this summer while I was in town from Chicago (my second tattoo didn't come out the way I wanted it to, so I figured I'd go back to what had already worked so well).Both times, I was greeted warmly and taken through the process of designing the tattoo with an artist that was both approachable and talented (which is exactly what you want when you're about to entrust your body to someone who's going to alter it's appearance forever).The most recent time I was there, Shane was great about explaining to me why the design I wanted couldn't be as small as I was envisioning.  I appreciated his candor and we altered the design to make it larger & change the placement a little so that it was exactly what I wanted.  At one point, I apologized for making him do yet another revision to get it exactly right, and he replied, "Doesn't bother me at all - it's your body.  Anybody who'd mind getting this right for you would be in the wrong job."  PERFECT RESPONSE.  As we went into the room to actually get the inking done, my boyfriend whispered to me, "He's the guy who's name's on all the awards!"  I loved that.I've also had a couple of piercings done here (years ago, with Aric) and in my experience and what I know from friends, the prices I've paid at Mos Eisley's have been pretty typical for the size & design complexity.  And I've always felt like the whole place was really clean and taken care of and that the people working on my tattoo really knew what they were doing.  Can't put a price on the confidence you feel in putting the appearance your body into the right hands.Actually, on that note, I also happened to be there the same day the health inspector was taking a look at their books, and I overheard him say something to the effect of, "I love coming here, you do a great job with everything." I have had two tattoos done here. The first one is fantastic, the artist really worked with me on color and size until it was exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately he is no longer working there. The second tattoo I got there was a very disappointing experience. My tattoo was done by Finley. It is lettering and after 3 months it is still very raised and bumpy. It looks more like a brand than a tattoo. In addition, some of the letters are so close together that it makes it hard to read the text. The tattoo artist also talked the whole time he was tattooing about his crazy ex-girlfriend which is not something that I wanted to hear about while I was getting tattooed. My brother had a tattoo done the same day as mine by another one of artists, and his looks great. My advice would be to avoid Finley and go with a more experienced artist. Read Less

I got my first, and so far only, tat here.  Awesome place--it's not some seedy hole in the wall (despite what the name might suggest to Star Wars fans), but is clean, sleek and professional--honestly, I've been to dirtier dentist's offices. I had a custom tattoo drawn up. Unfortunately, they lost my artwork, so I was pretty pissed since my artist didn't (and still doesn't as far as I know) work weekends, so I had to take a day off of work.  Once they found it, not only did Sean come in on a Saturday, just for me, but they knocked $50 off the price as a way of apologizing.I've also had two sets of ear piercings here.  The second set didn't take (not their fault--I wear a headset for work and it proved to be a bigger problem than I thought).  Anyway, the piercer I had, Aric knows his stuff and is a good guy.  I have three friends who solely get inked here, another who mostly goes here, and my uncle only goes here as well.  I'll be back! Ok I hope this review turns out to be something practical. I am only speaking of the "pre-tattoo" experience. But from what I gather preparation is everything. I have over 5 tattoos all of which were mostly spur of the moment ideas. Something different happened when I visited Mos Eisleys... The receptionist was very professional and prompt. She told me to look through all of the artists portfolios FIRST and then choose an artist not based on name or reputation, but rather which artists' work most matched my desire for the tattoo I wanted to get. Really cool!Then as I sat and looked through the collection of art, I witnessed how detailed and attentive Mos Eisleys staff were. They are a busy place! I wanted a tatt right away as usual, I came in with cash and they said that it would be better to get references (pictures) of what I wanted and consult with the artist first. I could hardly believe it, I was actually stunned to be rejected at first, but realized good ORIGINAL artwork takes time. So with that said I have an appointment to see the drawing 2 weeks from now. This is not a "fly by night" orginization but rather a well prepared and well situated buisness of working professionals who will keep saftey and respect to the craft as top priority.
