DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME. Jay Johnson is his name and he is terrible. I scheduled a consult with him, the day of the consult he seemed like he knew what he was doing and he was friendly. He took pictures of my current tattoo because I want more added on) and he took photos of tattoo ideas that were along the lines of what I wanted with room for him to put his own flare on it. He promised me he would reach out with photos of what he had drawn before my appointment (which was in two weeks). I had also explained to him that because of my current job I would only be able to schedule a time on the weekends to get it done and all seemed acceptable so he had me give a 50 dollar deposit for my scheduled time. 5 days before my appointment I tried to get ahold of him because I had not yet seen any drawings that he had promised. I got no response. Then the day of my appointment came and I was excited but nervous because I had not seen anything. When I showed up he was running late. We waited for about ten minutes before he finally appeared with my tattoo. The tattoo looked like it had been traced. It was NOTHING like what we spoke about and it was roses, which again I did not ask for. When I said this to him he appologized and then retook photos of the same ones he originally had taken pictures of during the consult... he told me it would take him 1 1/2 hours to draw something else back up. I asked if I should come back in an hour and a half. He told me it would be best to reschedule since a walk in had just come in and that was going to take him about 30 minutes. He not only wasted my time but he was completely disrespectful about doing so and blew me off for what was going to be a 300 tattoo for a walk in. None the less I agreed to come in the next day and see if he had something more like what we talked about. He again told me he would send me the image before I made the 30 minute drive there. I got the image 3 minutes before my scheduled appointment and it was still NOTHING like the flowers we had spoken about. JAY JOHNSON IS NOT THE TATTOO ARTIST YOU WANT. Kyle Weeks is absolutely amazing. I received a tattoo from him yesterday and it was everything that I have been wanting but didn't know how to conceptualize. I gave him a couple pictures to draw inspiration from, gave him some vague descriptive words like "dainty, delicate, feminine" and said I also wanted to incorporate an arrow in there somehow...I didn't give him much to go on but man- he hit the nail on the head. More over, the linework was so tiny, precise and perfect, which can't be easy. It also needs to be mentioned that he was extremely patient with me and made me feel completely comfortable the entire time. It had been about 12 years since my last tattoo and I was very nervous. He made me laugh and put me at ease. There was another artist there working on his client (don't recall his name) who also chimed in on the conversations I was having with Kyle and my friend that I brought along, the other artist made me laugh and was very clearly trying to help put me at ease. He was a welcome distract me from the discomfort as well. They are all so kind and professional- but not in a stuffy kind of way. They are clean, funny and make the entire process enjoyable. Fantastic experience getting my very first art done here today. Davey could not have been more professional and it is clear they know what they are doing. These guys live it. The first thought I had after walking out was how much I wanted to turn back around and get more work done!I am a big believer in "you get what you pay for" and for my own work, and other stuff I saw done there, the prices seem very fair. You are not going to get a "cheap" tattoo here - but who the heck wants a "cheap" tattoo ? If you are just starting out, do NOT be scared off by what you think this shop might charge.Overall a great value for first-rate work with plenty of atmosphere and nothing but respect from everyone there. This place looked intriguing from the outside but not inside.  Some employees have an attitude problem. I walked in with some friends and had to wait to get service. Like "Hi, may i help you?" Nothing. I figured they were busy.  So when couple of them happened to walk by...still nothing. So i just asked "Excuse me, is your ink vegan?". He replied back with an angry attitude like i was accusing him of something. "Yes it is!"  and walked off quickly.I looked at my friends' faces and i'm glad i wasn't the only one who noticed his behavior. Not only that we also noticed the dead animal heads on the walls. Really disgusting and un-vegan.Considering it's Ferndale, it was surprising to see such unprofessional customer service and lack of respect for animals. I bet he lied.  They obviously support hunting, the ink probably isn't vegan and even if it was, they probably buy real pig skin to do their tattoo training on. Read Less

To be upfront, I've only been here twice, both times for their annual birthday bonanza. We were there for the better part of four hours each time, so we got a lot of time to pay attention to the artists and staff, as well as check out the building.All of the artists and assistants were super friendly and welcoming, something I don't always feel from tattoo shops. There were no "holier than thou" attitudes or "you should be so lucky to be in my chair" egos. Just cool people shelling out awesome tattoos.The shops is pretty open, but still seemed clean and sanitary. Even with a crowd of literally hundreds of people and waiting lists 8 hours long, I didn't see any of the artists cutting corners on safety, or on quality of their work.Obviously I got to see a lot of tattoos being done - by like 8 artists simultaneously - and I've got to say that I'd feel pretty comfortable walking in and getting work done by any of them. The shop is really nice and clean. Went last weekend to see Davey James but he was booked so we scheduled an appointment today (one week later) for 3pm. We got there at 240pm and he was not done with his walk-in until 330pm. When asked why he would do a walk in right into our scheduled app he just shrugged his shoulders. We then waited an additional 20min to be called back to his chair. We got back there and I expressed more detail into how I wanted the tattoo and he raised his voice and said my idea won't work. Then said "I'm not the guy for you" stood up, took off his gloves, and stormed off. Extremely poor professionalism. I work in healthcare and despite how angry I may get I would never explode on someone like that AT WORK. Definitely would not recommend him unless you're fine with having his idea and his idea only for YOUR tattoo. Read Less

Seriously impressed with care taken to keep stations cleaned, sterilized by all the artists. I got to watch them while i sat next to my hubby getting tattooed. Bonus, great music variety playing in the shop. Only small critic, some rugs need replacing due to rubber curling. And the stupid cute tiger rug, needs trip to Hagopian rug for cleaning. In regards to the negative reviews of this place: Honestly, if you receive pushback from these guys for your idea, chances are it's not an optimal or ideal concept. My experience with them has been that they want your tattoo to look the best it can, and they're going to do what's best for you and your tattoo. I've had them switch up the size, placement, and positioning of my original concept, and it was always for the better. After all, they are the professionals. Don't waste your time and definitely not your money with this place. I walked in with a very simple design and wanted to add flames - the hipster douchebag immediately had a smartass comment about how I "basically wanted to make the most difficult design possible" and preceded to give me all the reasons he was unwilling to work with me on my design. I wanted to make it slightly smaller, but he made it sound like I was asking for the moon. Look elsewhere if you have any ideas of your own, otherwise you'll get shot down in the first minute of conversation. Zach is amazing. I've gotten one tattoo from him and he's currently doing a cover up and expansion of a lily tattoo gone wrong years ago, and it's a million times better already! I was in and got a tattoo about two months ago. I was nervous (it was my first one), but not obnoxiously so. I was just asking questions when I felt necessary. I left disappointed because of how my artist was treating me, and how rude and short he was the whole time. I got a small tattoo so it took all of 15 minutes, and I was the one begging for conversation to try and keep my mind off of what was going on. He seemed almost annoyed with me. Now, two months later, I am still disappointed. My tattoo needs a touch up TERRIBLY. There are gaps in the lines, and spots that are completely missing ink, and I followed ALL of the care instructions. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Signature Tattoo. The shop is beautiful and clean; it's located in my favorite block on Nine Mile in Ferndale. It's next door to the Boston Tea Room; across from Natural Food Patch...two of my favorite places.I had been eyeing the location for a while; but I never really thought about having another tattoo. I have regretted the one I do have for years.  Anyhoo, you're not here for a back story. I simply had to have a tribute in memoriam of Prince. I called and spoke to Madson. He could see me right away. When I arrived, he greeted me like a true gentleman would. I liked him immediately. We had a fabulous conversation which made me feel super comfortable. There was very little pain. I thought the tattoo would hurt like crazy because it's located just beneath my wrist; but it was fine. I adore my Prince symbol tattoo. Had a really top notch experience with Loaf, if you are anywhere in the Detroit metro area, make the trip to see him it'll be worth it.He is very knowledgeable and was great about giving suggestions about our design ideas to get the best looking tattoo and educating us in what would look good and why.  He took the time to draw up several designs so we could see what his interpretation would be and choose from there. His station was super clean and he got it all setup quick,  then one of my favorite things about our experience with him is that his machine is QUIET.  When we first started I was the only one in the shop who was at the tattoo stage, and it was so quiet he could carry a normal conversation.
