In February 2017 I made an appointment with Raphael Barros. Here's what ensured over the following 8 months... * February: left a deposit over the phone; earliest appointment I could get was end of May.* Middle of April: scheduled the initial consult, drove 20 miles out to the shop from Boston on a Saturday and Raph no-showed. No explanation from him, no apology, nothing. * Beginning of May: drove out to the shop a second time and actually met with him. He had legitimate concerns about how the design would work in the space, wanted to completely change the design and wouldn't work with me at all. Finally said he would just draw something up and send it over so I wouldn't have to drive out to the shop a 3rd time. I made sure to reiterate this point so there was absolutely no confusion because I was shocked that he was willing to send out his artwork (although it was a portrait so there was little that was proprietary about it). He agreed and said he would draw something up and send it over. * Weeks go by and he never sends anything. I text him a few days before my appointment and get no response. I still have no idea what he's planning to do. * End of May, the day before my appointment: the shop calls to tell me Raph is stressed about how to make the piece work and to just come in and figure it out. I wasn't happy about taking off work having no idea of what I'm getting inked, especially since I've been waiting 3 months for this appointment and have gone into the shop multiple times, so we agreed to postpone it while I come up with a different design. * End of July: I call and reschedule for September to get a dragon half sleeve. They say that a few days before the appointment Raph will reach out to have me send pictures and discuss the details. I hear nothing until the day before my appointment at 2pm. They ask me to text Raph the details, which I do. He responds saying he doesn't do dragons and can refer me to a different artist, otherwise asks if we can do a tiger or meditating monk instead. It's been a month and a half since I made the second appointment and he waited until literally the day before to tell me this. Still I tried to compromise saying I could possibly do a tiger and asking what he has in mind? His response, "For tiger I have many different ideas". It's now 4pm, I'm at work, it's 22 hours before an appointment I've waited 8 months for, and again he wants to change the entire design and is giving me no input at all about what he's going to do. I write back asking how this would work, would he just draw a couple different things up, was he thinking just a tiger head or the full body, what colors, etc. He never responds. This guy Instagram's like a 12 year old girl and he found the time to post on Instagram later that same night, but he couldn't be bothered to return a text from a client.* The next morning, 4 hours before my appointment, still nothing. At this point I had enough and I wrote to the shop telling them I wasn't coming in and I'd like my deposit back. Apparently situations like this are a frequent occurrence with Raph and they were very apologetic and refunded it in full. There's no doubting this guy's talent, but be aware that he is a nightmare to work with and a prima donna of epic proportions. He literally does not give a shit about you, your time, or what you want. He only cares about himself and his image. He loves to advertise being on Ink Master Season 8. It's just too bad Ink Master isn't judged on ego and unprofessionalism or homeboy might have made it past Episode 1. Go download the SpikeTV app and watch it for free. He doesn't come off looking good at all. Moral of the story...there are 21,000 tattoo shops in the US and about 60,000 artists. Even if Raph is on par with the top 1% that means there are 600+ artists in the US alone that are just as good or better. Do yourself a favor and find someone who cares. And here's the kicker to all of this...I was a REFERRAL. Let that sink in for a minute. This is how he treats referrals; imagine how he treats someone off the street or someone inexperienced that is getting their first tattoo done. Beware. Read Less
