I had done my first tattoo here about 10 years ago. I came back to the same place to get my second and my sisters 1st tattoo with Nicole. Our appointment was made for May27th 2018 months ago via a consultation where she was informed I would be flying in from out of state for this appointment. Today, we get a chipper call from Joe letting us know our appointment was being CANCELLED because Nicole decided to travel rather than honor her clients appointment which had been confirmed and a deposit of $100 was given. This is extremely unprofessional and no matter how good of an artist you are, unprofessionalism is unacceptable! They offered to find another artist but that would take a long time according to them. The artists may be cool here- but this place is routinely allowing a rapist (with a warrant out for their arrest) tattoo here. For years living in the valley I've heard of random horror stories about how this shop operates- namely that it operates not as an independently owned shop by artists, but as a corporation by shady people who don't tattoo. This shop is actively covering up sexual assault and this place deserves to be boycotted. Read Less

The staff (at the desk) are friendly and do their best to make you feel at home. That is the one star.  I made an appointment through their regular email process and described exactly what I was looking for. I requested Oleg Turyanskiy because I felt his work best represented what I was looking for.  It all went well until I got there. I drove 4 hours only to find that the artist must not of ever read my description. He opened up with "I don't to cover-ups" when I clearly stated that I wanted to start a new sleeve that would require some cover up.   I stayed positive and decided to just do the half sleeve anyway (should have left because this guy felt wrong the entire time we spoke). He agreed on the half sleeve and told me I had an  hour to kill. I go next door for a meal and maybe 50 minutes later the shop manager calls me and tells me she needs to speak to me about my tattoo.  I walk back in only to hear that the artist is now scheduled to leave the country and doesn't want to start my tattoo because he's not sure when he's coming back stateside.  I was pissed not only because the shop allowed this to happen but that the tattooist didn't even have the balls to come out and tell me himself.   I have several tattoos and this was by far the worst experience I've had.  I research artist and shops carefully and felt this was a great shop. Unfortunately that was not the case.  Go there if you're a local but if you have to trek it out there, I wouldn't waste my time.  I'm surprised the artists aren't better vetted by this shop.  This Oleg Turyanskiy character was a waste of time and the shop didn't do much to make this right.  They refunded my deposit but one would think they'd go above and beyond when it's their artist that clearly made the experience horrible.  Buyer beware Read Less

I saw Dee's work originally on instagram (@micromachinedee) and I KNEW I wanted to get a tattoo from her. I was SO excited when I found out she was coming to the east coast! I made my way to Off the Map from CT and I couldn't have had a better experience from start to finish. Everyone in the shop was welcoming and awesome, it was super clean, and I loved chatting with everyone.Dee gave me my first tattoo- a Pikachu that I've wanted forever- and the design she made was so perfect (it was her idea to add a little frosting to the Pikachu's tail and I LOVE it- everyone always points that out first!)  I know tattoos on the ribcage are super painful, but Dee made it totally worth it. Her art is adorable, the line work and color is beautiful, and I'm honestly sooo shocked at how well it has healed!! I love it and I'll definitely be visiting Off the Map again in the future! I went for my first tattoo, a feminist piece, done by Kellsey in September. I brought some reference pictures and asked her to mash them together. The final product is BEAUTIFUL. Perfect color balance, amazing shape, great lines. Anything colorful I'll be going back to her. My second tattoo was completed today by Justin. It's more American Traditional, kinky, bondage design. It's beautiful and I'm in love. He was helpful in determining placement. He was also sweet and encouraging - I never get judged for wanting some BDSM-esque tattoo on my leg (and I am so grateful for this judgement freezone!!!!). this place is filled with talented artists the only negative thing i have to say is that when your paying top dollar for great artists and you have to sit for hours a fold up chair doesnt cut itive been to other places and their chairs are very comfy. when you have to sit for hours your ass cramps up on folding chairs cmon on guys and ladies the money you make buy some chairs and make the whole experience great Read Less

Highly recommended!!! I have had tattoos done from several shops in the past, but this is now the only place I will have any work done. The front desk employees were great with finding me an artist that was passionate about the piece I wanted (who happened to be a guest artist). The shop has a great environment. Most importantly, the tattoos that I saw being turned out during my session, were amazing. Not to mention I walked out with a pretty awesome one as well (hence the review). My siblings and I set up an appointment for a "family tattoo date" two months prior to our visit to Grants Pass. We put down $100 deposits each. After we put down our deposits and asked the artist to draw up a sketch, it was apparently their "policy" that they couldn't send us the sketch--they told us that we had to come into the shop to review the sketch. Mind you, two people in our party were traveling from out-of-state. So, the shop did agree to a FaceTime consultation, which we set up. After the second FaceTime consult, the artist, Sydney Beene, told me she would email me in case we had any further revisions, but she didn't. So I contacted the shop for her email address. I emailed her the revisions and sent a hard copy in the mail. One hour passed, but the artist wasn't ready. Two hours passed. She still wasn't ready. Sydney told me that she had "thrown our drawing away" by accident. At that point, we informed the front desk staff that we had more plans beginning at 3:45 PM. The front desk told us that they'd actually scheduled us for the entire day (until 7 PM). We explained that there was no way we could stay the entire day, and that we had fully expected our appointments to begin at 10 AM. At 12:30, Sydney finally began tattooing our first sibling. She made it through 3 people before we had to leave. Then, not only could they figure out how to refund those of us who didn't get tattooed during our allotted timeframe, but they also refused to provide us with the drawing so the two of us could go to another shop in our hometown to finish our sibling tattoo experience. My experience was not so great. I went in for a walk-in, expecting them to refuse my idea and send me on my way if they didn't feel they could reach my expectations. While requesting my image the artist said, multiple times, "no I'm not doing it like that", so I was open for critique. I was okay with the way it was drawn up but the execution was absolutely unacceptable. Now there's not a single thing I can do to fix what I have on my body. It's not centered, it's inconsistent, and the shading is too like it looks like I've had it for 10 years. I know nobody is perfect, but if I'm paying you, a good 400$ (way overly priced for what I wanted and was not informed until it was done) I expect things to be neat. Lines are not straight, scale is very big for what I wanted, and overall unsatisfied. Thanks, but no thanks. Never again. Read Less

Note that this review is about the studio and has nothing to do with my artist.  The people that work here were nice enough, but I really dislike the large open area with office cubicle approach.  And the portable massage table is absolute HELL after an hour or two (I was having the back of my leg done so had to lay face down on this torture device).   I have bad back and had a 6 hour session and a 9 hour session, and I was ready to quit the 9 hour session not due to pain from the tattoo but from the pain in my lower back.  I find an artist I like and I go where they work, but I would much prefer privacy and comfort. I just got my first tattoo done here after somebody walked into my restaurant and I liked his artwork. This was my first tattoo and I take it very seriously. I wanted something unique, delicate and feminine. But I wasn't sure how to get what I was envisioning in my head. But somehow Ben Licata drew exactly what I wanted. After looking him up it seems he focuses on skulls, and I think what I wanted (three birds lol) was the opposite of that and he did a PERFECT job. This guy is tallented and knows what he is doing. He was extremely nice, everything is really clean and he made me feel extremely comfortable. My first tattoo experience was perfect, I did my research, knew what I wanted and spent three years thinking about it lol. If I get another tattoo, it would be at this place. Read Less

I can't speak to the location itself since I live in NYC and and have never been to Off The Map.  But I was able to get 2 days with one of their star artists, Oleg Turyanskiy, on one of his recent trips to the city as a guest artist.  I had researched him for weeks and was sure that he'd be the man for the job.  I was looking for a good black/gray artist with a real talent for realism. Oleg is a perfectionist and has a true God-given talent.  I find myself staring at my piece in the mirror just wondering how he did it.  Truly an amazing artist...I'm already thinking about the next one. Had a recent floral, geometric traditional tattoo with some watercolor splashes done by guest artist Kristina Bennett  at Off the Map's new location at the button factory, right down the street from the main location as a Mother's Day present to myself. All the staff were super friendly and Kristina especially really listened to my ideas and we ended up with a great collaboration for a cover up. She "let the tattoo speak to her" and it turned out great. All the staff really helped keep my mind off the pain towards the end, which really helped, thanks guys!I'll be back for more of your awesome resident and guest artists! Read Less

The service is WONDERFUL. I wanted a toe tattoo and had a hard time finding a place that would do it (toes are high-risk areas for tattoos; they often fade quickly, get messed up while healing, and are prone to infection), and Off The Map said they would. They scheduled me right away and introduced me to my artist prior to the appointment. I showed him pictures of my idea and he offered to give me an additional small tattoo for the same price (the shop minimum was $100, and he wanted to make sure that I got my money's worth). During the appointment, we reviewed my requests before he sat down to work, and he made sure that the inks were the colors I wanted (the blue was a bit light for my taste, but he said it was the darkest shade he had). He was courteous and focused. He gave me advice on the healing process afterward, and both tattoos healed very well. [I can't remember the artist's name, but I want to give him a shout-out if he's reading this!]I was so pleased with my tattoo experience that I drove up to Massachusetts (I live in Pennsylvania) again with my boyfriend the following year so that he could get his first. His tattoo was stunning, and it was done by a guest artist from Connecticut. The shop was aesthetically pleasing, sterile, and comfortable. I'm glad that I got my first tattoo here, and my boyfriend is very pleased with his as well. They really value their customers, and I even received a coupon in the mail for my birthday! OTM is the kind of place that I don't mind driving two hours to get to. The shop employs talented, thoughtful, friendly and funny people who really help keep your mind off any of the discomfort that often comes with getting a tattoo. I really respect that they invite artists based on talent and potential, instead of popularity. I worked with a visiting artist who might be considered "junior" in some places in terms of years of experience, but I'm telling you -- when I saw what she could do, it was clear to me that many of those popular "TV show" artists might have trouble keeping up with her.
