After almost 20 yrs, I finally pulled the trigger on getting my first tattoo. I had no clue what the process was, but the team was super helpful in walking me through step-by-step from image selection to pricing to cleaning/recovery. No question was taken lightly, and I'm sure I asked quite a few "dumb" ones. Nate was a true professional all the way through. I liked his calm demeanor, it felt very reassuring. He provided some expert advice on my design... sizing, placement, and how it could look over time (I had some tiny paisley's originally designed but Nate mentioned over time they can look like small blobs... definitely didn't want that!). This place is super clean, the artists are always cracking jokes, making it a very friendly, easy going and comfortable environment. During the session, Nate took extra care with his instruments, making sure they were clean and prepped... literally taking every piece from individually wrapped packaging and carefully putting them all together. Knowing this was my first tattoo, he paused frequently to make sure I was ok, which was great because I got a little light headed towards the beginning. No worries though, the team just brought in another chair that I could lay flat, gave me a lollipop... and we continued the session. I wrote a review for The Gallery awhile ago and I have no idea why it's not longer there... I guess I'll rewrite it with the highlights.For Christmas, The Gallery was offering a GREAT promotion: they would add 20% to any gift certificate purchased. After I did some research on their artists and saw their work, I figured I would buy one to gift. I gifted him a $200 gift certificate and, after browsing the work of all the artists, he selected Nate. They discussed the piece and scheduled an appointment a few weeks later.The final piece was gorgeous, the studio is immaculate, and everyone who works there is so friendly. Parking can be a hassle (there is a small lot that serves multiple businesses in the same building as The Gallery) but Nate was worth the trouble. I highly recommend these guys. Read Less

Great tattoo shop with great artists. I had Nate do a whole black and grey piece for me and it came out awesome. The shop has a huge TV which is always playing some movie or show to keep you preoccupied. If TV is not your thing the banter between the artists will keep you laughing and entertained. For our 70th birthdays, my best friend and I decided to get tattoos.  I had a consult with Nate who spent a good amount of time with me and explained the process.  The day of the appointment, he had to continuously redo the tattoo on the computer to get it scaled to the size we wanted.  We are both more than thrilled with the results.  Nate is the best!! I've had 2 tattoos with Dan Brown and I can't wait to book so many more! The first one he looked at a picture of what I sort of wanted and drew it right in front of me, I was blown away at how he captured exactly what I wanted right on the spot. He's a true artist. This was a great experience , highly recommended even for your 1st it's a comfortable environment and a big screen TV to distract you. They very friendly and all had senses of humor .If you get nervous & socially awkward like I do you know that all helps ;)Chris is a great chill artist and cleaned up my single -piece nicely only had to wait 2 weeks in between .Being $150 per hour is flexible I've seen worse , mine was an hour in a half and they didn't charge for full 2 hours AKA setting up as I expected .It was $50 for a deposit upon consultation and $175 at the end of the tattoo appointment for an hour in a half single setting black / gray tattoo .I will definitely be going back at some point .Keep up the great work . I got my first tattoo a week ago from Chris, and I couldn't be happier!! The whole experience was awesome - he really listened during the consultation and had great ideas for how to transform the little pencil drawing of a raven that my fave author doodled in a book into a very cool little tattoo! As he was actually working on the tattoo, he was very good about telling me what he was doing, which I appreciated! Shaun was also really great to deal with on the phone and over email to figure out the schedule! Everyone I met was really nice and not intimidating! The shop was very clean and bright and welcoming! I had an appointment with Dan on Saturday (8/20) for a small outline tattoo. I hate to say that I was full of indecision but I truly was. I had picked out 6 designs and couldn't figure out what I wanted and where. Dan was extremely nice and patient as we talked through it. He did a great job and was really fun to talk to. Nate is the best artist I've ever been to. He is extremely professional, respectful, and made me feel so comfortable. Less than impressed, but i'll be a little lenient, as i never ended up getting tatooed. Booked for a 7 month wait.. Finally came weeks before having it done and i needed to attend an important appointment, so i asked to move my tattoo to my follow up (they booked me for two sessions just in case) and they had "lost" that date. Still havent anything back about it and im out the 100$ deposit. Friends however have loved this place, but its not worth the wait for me anymore to book again and ive found an incredible artist elsewhere. Read Less

I went here for my first tattoo after researching a couple of places around the area and boy I was NOT disappointed. Firstly, I was nervous about getting my first tattoo as I had the idea for over four years and was not familiar with the process at all.  I called them up to schedule a consultation and they were very nice and accommodating--scheduling my consultation for just two days after my call. I worked with Dan Brown with a design I already had drawn and he was fantastic, making suggestions based on his history with tattoos as well as being honest in regards to size and detail.  He was able to schedule me in (from what looked like to be a very full calendar) only two weeks after my consultation. The experience was great.  I came in and he already had a stencil drawing which he was even still willing to modify in size 2-3 times the day of (and didn't factor this into the time calculation for the price!).  The studio is amazingly clean, welcoming, and chill.  I will say the vibe is very relaxed--we watched "Superbad" and "This is the End" on their TV while he was working on my tattoo--so I would factor that into your decision to come here. The tattoo came out as everything I always dreamed of for over four years and I could not be happier.  He explained everything well and asked many times if I wanted to take a break while he was working.  I could tell he was genuinely happy to see me happy with the end product and answered all my very basic questions about taking care of the tattoo and I was convinced to get their $20 tattoo care package (its a great deal!). Overall I could not be happier to have come here.  While I do not plan to get another tattoo anytime soon, if I do in the future you bet I will definitely be coming back here to see Dan! Having recently moved from San Francisco, it took me a long time to find a good tattoo studio. If you are looking, look no further. I was extremely impressed with the professional, clean, and very welcoming shop. I had a really good consultation with Kurt and I felt like he really felt like he understood what I wanted with my tattoo. He did some tracings on my leg and quickly sketched out some ideas. I had two appointments to get the actual work done and was just as impressed with Kurt's work.  Both times Kurt was ready to start almost right away and got quite a bit done. This place is hands-down amazing. My fiance and I decided to get matching anchor tattoos in place of wedding bands for our upcoming wedding (not on our actual hands, but our upper arms), and Alec was our artist. He finished mine in *18 minutes*, and it's the most high-quality tattoo I've ever gotten. My fiance's took a bit longer since it was slightly bigger and was equally well-done. In addition to the quality of this place, all of the artists were super friendly, and the place was very clean with lots of eye candy (art on the walls, recent issues of Inked, and a huge HD TV playing reruns of Workaholics) and free coffee. I have been looking forward to getting my next tattoo for over eight years. I did hours of research online not only on my piece, but all the various tattoo shops around MA. I decided to stay local after being impressed by the pictures of work done at The Gallery.  My initial phone call to set up a consultation with Alec gave a great first impression......which meant a lot to me. If customer service comes off cold over the phone; that would put me off from even wanting to go there. The pictures don't do the studio place justice; it is clean, classy and bright from all the natural light shining in all the windows. Alec was nice, attentive and chill enough to set me at ease to share my ideas for what I wanted. Between his openness to hear me and his suggestions; I left feeling like I was going to be getting exactly what I wanted. The day of my tattoo Alec showed up seeming as excited as I was. His drawing was my idea on paper, and I was eager to begin the process. He took his time during every part of the tattoo; checking over his lines and shading. The piece is just stunning; it exceeded what I imagined and because of the sentiment behind it, makes it mean that much more to me. Everything about my experience there was positive and I highly recommend this shop. Highly recommend. I had my second tattoo done here with Alec on 9/27/13 and it was the best experience. This shop is the best and believe me I shopped around. I live in Marlborough and work in Charlestown....I visited a lot of shops and this one is spectacular. As far as the tattoo and the artist.....AMAZING! Where do I start?I have had 2 sessions here and will have my final one in the next few weeks.  I have never gotten a tattoo before and was going for a big piece on my arm so I was quite nervous about it.  I went with a really detailed animal so I knew I needed to find someone with some serious talent.  A friend recommended them to me and I was super glad I stopped by their studio!  Place is exceptionally clean, great location and they couldn't have made me feel more welcomed. I set up a consultation with Kurt and I was instantly impressed.  He did a quick draft for me and then spent some serious time on drawing it all out.  I was very nervous for my first appointment but Kurt and the guys are really good at making you feel comfortable and distracting ya, making 4 hours seem like 1hr :)I cant wait to finish my current piece and go back for my next. I have a horrible tattoo I am getting covered up in a few weeks by Alec. I had a few bad experiences should probably be on tattoo nightmares. Some place I been to everyone was really cocky, some places seemed like a hang out and walking in was like you were crashing their party, some made me feel like I was lucky enough that they would talk to me. This place isn't like that at all! Very welcoming the receptionist is cool beans! Alec and Kurt are have pretty mellow personalities. Started working on a sleeve (skull, koi, oni) with Kurt a few months ago.  I called up the shop about starting up a sleeve and they set me up with a consultation a few days later. Showed up with my idea and a few reference pieces and mapped everything out with Kurt. He's a really cool dude so it was easy to talk to him about what I was looking for. The best part was he seemed just as excited about the tattoo as me. I scheduled a handful of appointments and now I got this killer piece of artwork on my arm. Couldn't be happier with the way it's coming out. The studio itself is awesome. It's always super clean which is comforting. There's a rotating art gallery to check out. My favorite thing about the studio is there always something great playing on the flat screen. Always Sunny, Wild Boys, Workaholics make my 4 hour sessions fly by. I feel like in a lot of ways Ryan M. took the words right out of my mouth, but I'll take a shot at adding my 2 cents about Kurt, his space and his work. I moved to Boston a little over a year ago and immediately started the search for an artist who had the talent and portfolio that fit with the images in my mind of what my sleeve would be. It took me over 6 months to find Kurt, but when I did(he was still at Pino Bros.) I instantly fell in love with his work. You only have to flip through a couple images in his portfolio to see what a professional he is. The cohesiveness, attentional to detail and raw artistic talent is absolutely undeniable in his work. My only fear was that a guy this talented could be a total jerk and still make a good living, but as Ryan mentioned, it only takes 5 mins to realize that Kurt's personality is as good as his work (which is of course important when you spend 35 hours with the guy). The consultation was great, he was completely open to my (somewhat ludicrous) ideas and was (or at least did a good job of convincing me that he was) genuinely excited to work on my arm. As he worked on the design, he was great about communicating where he was in the process and letting me know how he was going to bring it to life in a way that made sense for both my arm and the piece of art. This is something that i don't think great tattoo artists get enough credit for, but its so important that they can tell you what is going to WORK, not just what's possible. Just another reason why he's such a pro. Not surprisingly, we agreed on the design on the first shot... it is beautiful. From there it was a breeze. His work on the skin is as good as it is on paper. His color work is incredible. watching it come to life on my arm has been a really cool experience. The only negative I have is that Kurt's work is so good it has made everything else I have on my body look like crap..... but I have no one to blame for that but myself! Echo Ryan's sentiments on the new space too, The Gallery is an amazing space, Kurt clearly put the same care into it as he does into every piece he does. well worth the drive to concord. Can't recommend Kurt and The Gallery enough, and I do, almost everyday when someone is blown away by the piece he's done for me. I'll close with a quote from my mom, avid tattoo-hater:"I don't like tattoo's, but this is an amazing piece of artwork and he did such a good job of bringing the idea to life that i can't help but love it"Give Kurt a call and get yourself into his calendar ASAP, he's the real deal. I first went to Kurt Brown at Pino Bros, upon recommendation from a friend of my wife's, going on 5 yrs ago.   I'm pretty huge on first impressions and on that first impression, he was a down to earth, easy to talk to, non judgmental artist who is very open to talking over and working through any ideas you may have.    Over the years i've thrown piles of reference images at him to make art from and he's nailed it time after time, without fail or needing to compromise.  He enjoys and excels at traditional imagery and traditional japanese.  Kurt is a perfectionist, and it shows in spades in his portfolio.   He's had quite a few pieces in the last few years that i've seen on other people and thought "damn, i wish i thought of that first" because quality of work is that good.  His vision and the cohesion of which he attains for large work is outstanding.  I've worked with him on a half sleeve, a forearm piece, a chest piece, and a 1/2 leg sleeve and he's been nothing short of professional and easy going for each of them.  It's hard to trust a stranger to do that amount work on your body over a number of years, his process makes you comfortable and allows you to trust him, of which i do implicitly.   Which is something I've heard from other customers of his.  His new space at The Gallery is pristine. With a super clean, open layout, ego-free and welcoming vibe, it seems like a place that you could just hang out at (if he wasn't busy cranking out awesome work).  Walls are donned with some of his best work, art and a giant flat-screen typically showing cult-classic movie of the day.   The shop's neighborhood on Main Street in Concord is soon to be buzzing with a line out his door.   One note of advice tho:  make appointments WELL into advance (months).  He was in high demand at Pino, but now that he's running is own shop at the Gallery, he's even more highly sought after.   But i guaran-damn-tee he's worth the wait!!!
