Went with my cousin to get a small tattoo. The place is hard to find and once you walk upstairs the place feels empty and unkept. There are pieces of the wall that are chipped. Then an artist walks out with her client who leaves. She asks us what we were interested in getting and she says she has to clean up and she will draw it up for us, but we have to pay cash. That's sketchy. This did not make us comfortable. The fact that the place was falling apart and that there was no one there to clean up or great us makes me think they are not professional or cleanly. As well as the physical building decaying. Suze did my first tattoo about a year and a half ago, and I was so pleased I just went back for my second this week. I was looking for clean, simple lines for a couple of larger botanical designs (roses the first time, autumn leaves the second) and she did an excellent job creating custom art that fit my body well. Suze is friendly and dedicated to making sure the design is what you want, and she explains the process and shows you that everything is clean/freshly opened. Everything healed up nicely. Went in for my first tattoo and the artist appeared extremely high. His eyes were very glassy, slow and slurred speech, and very slow movements. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting and smelled like marijuana. I asked the artist if he was high and he immediately denied and became agitated, defensive, and very unprofessional. This tattoo studio is located in Cambridge, MA. Very hard to find the place. The place smelled of marijuana and was filthy. One of the workers was clearly high (glossy eyes, slurred speech, slow moving) and was aggravated when we asked him if he was under the influence. My wife and I were visiting Boston and we had an idea for a tattoo that we have wanted for a while. We called many places around the area and they were all booked for the weekend (we were only there for a few days). Through a little bit of research, we found Hourglass Tattoo Studio and specifically Sanjay. We really liked his portfolio and emailed him the same day to see if he had availability. He responded pretty quickly and we scheduled an appointment with him for the next day.  He drew up the design and with his edits it looked amazing, but explained that he didn't think the piece would work because of the curvature of our arms. This came as a bit of a surprise, but we trusted him since he is the expert so we decided to go with something else. We countered on the spot, with a new design, and thankfully (and surprisingly), he took it all in stride and drew up the design with no complaints. I think it helped that the new design was a bit smaller and simpler. Even though the new tattoo design was very impromptu for him, he was very fair and patient the whole time explaining what he thought would work and what would not. He is a very easy going and chill guy, with great taste in music, and you feel like you are in great hands. Not to mention the needle he uses (some kind of high speed, quiet needle) is much more painless than other needles I have felt before. I appreciate Sanjay for drawing up a great design and not being frustrated with us when we decided to change tattoo ideas. Thanks so much! The healing process was also nice and easy! After 20 years, I decided I wanted to get another tattoo.  I did my research, read all of the reviews and decided on Sanjay at Hourglass Tattoo Studio.  He has a great personality, a good listener and easy to talk to.  He will also tell you what will work and what won't, which is what you would expect from an honest tattoo artist.  I wanted something tiny, but we decided to enlarge it slightly so that it doesn't just look like a big blob as the years go by.  Sanjay did a great job and I am happy with the results! I first met Sanjay back in June when I walked in on a Monday afternoon with a drawing I wanted tattooed on my forearm. He quickly drew up a design, quoted me a price, and said he could do it that day if I had the time. The price was more than reasonable considering Sanjay's talent and willingness to accomodate a walk-in on a random Monday. I walked away fully satisfied and completely in love with my new tattoo - I knew I'd return to Sanjay when I wanted more. Fast forward to a couple weeks back. I reached out to Sanjay via Instagram about a 2 part thigh piece. He responded the next day and within the week I had met him for a consultation and scheduled an appointment for session one of two!  As before, the price was definitely reasonable and MORE than worth it. I cannot even begin to describe how amazing it feels to have something so beautiful on my body FOREVER. Sanjay is light-handed, listens to cool tunes while he does his thing, and always encourages you to let him know if you need a break or anything like that. I would recommend him in a heartbeat. I have been kicking around an idea for awhile -- it started as a text-based tattoo which I eventually talked myself out of. Only a few weeks ago did the idea really start to come together, so I walked into Hourglass to bounce my idea off of an artist. Suze was awesome -- immediately enthusiastic about the concept, and really helpful in directing me towards a vision that would make sense as a tattoo. I have walked into other shops before where I was dismissed (I assume) because I wasn't covered in tats, and have even been to places that have tried to pressure me into making appointments without really getting a good chance to speak to an artist (read: I felt taken advantage of as someone who was relatively novice at getting tattooed). None of that bullshit here. Suze took me and my idea seriously and took time to work through the idea and to answer questions, which really helped me feel at ease. Over the course of the 3 weeks between my consult and my appointment, Suze answered emails and was receptive to tweaks I wanted to make to the design. When I arrived for my appointment, she presented me with a sketch that was the best possible version of what I expected. Throughout the appointment she worked quickly, but was still attentive to how I was doing with the process -- it was as painless an experience as it could have been. I got tattooed by Suze at the Philly Tattoo Convention in 2015.  I trusted her judgement and she gave me a cool tattoo to memorialize the passing of my father.  Her suggestions made the tattoo better and I love it.  To my surprise I came back in 2017 and Suze was there again.  We reconnected and we got a tattoo of the batter of Endor R2-D2 style.  She added her spin on it again and it turned out eve better.  I told her I will be back next year for another tattoo!  She is awesome and listens to what you want and expands on it exponentially.  Definitely recommend her for tattoos.  Come back to Philly Soon! This review is long overdue.. I went to hourglass in 2012 to get my first tattoo.  I remember showing up about a half hour before they closed on a Friday, just looking to bounce some ideas back and forth, not necessarily to book an appointment (I'm a total weenie when it comes to needles and I wasn't completely sure I wanted to go through with it.)  Fifteen minutes later I have an appointment for the next day and I'm running across the street to the ATM to get money for my deposit.Suze made me feel comfortable from that first night.  I didn't want anything complicated.  A two inch lotus flower, just an outline, white ink, on my ribs.  Suze got excited and immediately lifted up her shirt to show me a gorgeous cascade of lotus flowers she has running down her own side. When I went back the next day she had the perfect little flower drawn up for me and brought me right back.  Everything was super sterile, needles and ink in sealed packaging, clean rooms, etc.  I told Suze about my fear of needles and she suggested I put on some of my favorite music to calm me down.  Three Guns & Roses songs later, I'm tatted up and out the door (with a handful of Starbursts to get my blood sugar back up.)I'm a total noob when it comes to tattoos and again, mine is super simple, but it's been four years and it still looks wonderful.  I'm not sure I will ever get a second, but if I do I will totally go back to Suze. Usually never write reviews, but my dude Breyner hooked it up so I had to leave a positive review for him.I had my first tattoo today, it was a simple cursive script tattoo on the inside of my left upper arm. I came in around 3:30 PM and was out by 5 PM because the only people ahead of me were already finishing up when I first walked in. The place isn't super fancy but it's clean and has a really chill vibe, and everyone there was very friendly.I was pretty nervous about my first tattoo, and was so relieved when Breyner was not weird about it at all! He worked with me over a few versions of the tattoo so that the font was perfectly to my liking, and then was very helpful when telling me how to lie down and to relax when it was getting done.The tattoo process itself was totally a breeze! Breyner and I just talked through the whole thing and had a really wonderful conversation, I barely felt the pain.I definitely would recommend this guy to anyone walking in there! Today I walked in about half an hour after they opened and Andrew took me right away. My original idea we discussed wouldn't fit where I wanted it to so luckily I had a back up idea just in case. He drew something up for me which took no time at all since it was small. When I was under the needle we chit chatted about The Wire and he had some music playing which was nice during those times I zoned out a bit. It was overall a relaxing experience. And after I was done he gave me some extra ideas about my original tattoo, which was great knowing that he gave it a bit more thought. I can't believe how fast it went from consultation to the actual inking phase...like 2 hours total. Came in as a walk in for a pretty simple tattoo and within minutes I was sitting down to get my first bit of ink.  Can't say enough good things about this place.  No flash or BS.  Chill atmosphere.  Step by step was clearly explained to me so there were no surprises.  Ryan did an amazing job and as the shops former apprentice he certainly learned a lot from the owner!  As someone who has dealt with a lot of artists/shops in the area, take it from me that this place rocks and deserves to be top of the list when thinking of getting a tattoo in the Boston area.  My ink looks amazing and is almost fully healed with no issues.  Ignore Niamhs review as she clearly doesn't know how tattoo artists work.  Def will be going back!
