I visited several shops in the Lexington area before I tried this one. Most had that "too cool" vibe and were not the most welcoming. Not the case at all with Castle of Color. Very friendly staff. This was my first tattoo experience and thankfully it was great!  Josh was our artist and I would go back to him again.  I called a few different places based on yelp reviews and they were much nicer on the phone so they got our business. After we made our appointment we talked to a friend that had also went here and said we would be in good hands.  The tattooing areas were clean and the chairs were comfortable.  Our artist was always conscientious of keeping things sanitary.  We are both very happy with the final product, most importantly.  I don't know much about what to look for on tattoos but my picture can speak to that. Got my apadravya done by Sara while her apprentice observed, both where very professional and an enjoyment to talk to, piercing went great and feels way better than the first time I had it done, the rest of the staff was friendly and light hearted, I enjoyed the atmosphere of the shop while I waited for my piercing, I will be going back when I decide to get a new piercing or tattoo. We had a good experience with them couple years back. Sara is a wonderful tattoo artist and would recommend her to anyone. However we went in there this past weekend to get a quote on a couple tattoos and the two guys behind the desk were the most unprofessional guys I have met ask how much the tattoo I wanted would cost, the guy says to me well it looks like a $200 dollar tattoo or $250 OR $300 guess we would have to stencil it on you to see how much its goin cost! I mean seriously this guy don't have a clue! So of course I went a few more places 5 in total, in Lexington and Nicholasville for a quote,Funny thing they could all look at it and give me a price. I came in Friday night and got 2 small tattoos. Very clean and very nice environment. Called other shops and never got the same hospitable responses that I got when I called here to enquire about my tattoo. I've waited 6 years to get my son's name and a drawing of me and him that he wrote out and drew himself. I received an amazing tattoo that looks like my son took a crayon and drew on my arm. The artist was amazing even when he found out I was a sissy and have a horrible fear of pain and needles, he did amazing and let my son watch. Joker (aka Yves Lopez), who did my tattoo, added an element to my tattoo that was not part of the stencil he put on my arm, was NOT part of the original design. AND he did not ask me if I wanted this, did not tell me AT ALL that he was adding this, and I didn't know about it until after he had done it. WTF??!!! That, in my opinion, if FULLY unprofessional. It's MY ARM, not yours- IF YOU'RE GOING TO ADD OR SUBTRACT FROM THE STENCILED DESIGN, YOU SHOULD PROBABLY LET THE PERSON YOU'RE TATTOOING IN ON IT. Unprofessional in the worst way- permanently inking something on someone WITHOUT their permission!!! But that's fine. I'll have it fixed somewhere else. I came in with a drawing i wanted brought to life, in memory of my father. When i had the artist (Joe) draw out the outline, it was completely different than what i had drawn, but still looked very nice. His skills with a pencil far surpass his skills with a tattoo gun, as he didn't know how to center the words underneath the outline, the lines in the leaves of the outline were not straight, or even INSIDE THE LINES. The outline was not even, not centered, and had many blank ...spots/line breaks. Then this man had the nerve to ask me for 200 ONLY for the outline. Let me add that my friend came with me to get the same tattoo, and his finished product looked perfectly normal, even though my artist is the one who sketched out the final product. I have emailed the owner to attempt to file a complaint, but i have never received any form of response. I would not recommend this tattoo shop, and i will not return to have this tattoo finished. This man destroyed a sentimental piece that was in memory of my father. The very least he could've done is try to stay inside the lines. I got a tattoo here today and it was such a rest experience! I walked in and the employees were very nice and I got started less than 15 mins after I got there even though I was a walk in! I got pierced by Katie and she was phenomenal! I came back a few months later to get a tattoo and it was way too much money for 6 lines. I got a triangle with another triangle in it. No shading and the lines are very very thin. It was $70! Went to another shop and got a much more intricate and quality it was $50. This is not the place for tattoos, even the piercings are a little pricey. They do quality work for sure, but they'll rip you off. Read Less

I had my very first tattoo done by Mikey last Saturday. He did a great Chinese Dragon on my leg. He tweaked the colors and added much more detail than my drawing offered. He talked me through each step, made sure I was comfortable, and exceeded all my expectations. His wife Sara was very helpful helping my wife with a design, and Greg, the owner was extremely friendly and made us feel welcome and relaxed as we waited for my turn with Mikey. I have a 1/4 sleeve by Sara. Looked fabulous, for a while. Looked horrible after a month. This piece is consistently advertised by castle of color. But the pic you see is right after being worked on and not after healing. Always make sure you know what an artist's healed work looks like. Sara didn't respond to many requests to touch this up. Now she is doing a very similar piece on another lady. So similar this lady would try and hide it from me. Custom work my foot!
