Sketchiest shop that ive probably been to. I paid a deposit and scheduled an appointment a few weeks out for my tat and when I showed up for my appointment they said the artist was tattooing someone else and that I couldn't be tattooed and need to reschedule for about another week out. Arrived there from a recommendation from my son. I got there at 10 til noon and waited for the noon opening. At 5 after it seemed like know one was going to open. I pulled my phone out to see other shops close by. A truck pulls up and backs in--young man gets out --never acknowledges me-puts a back pack on and walks around the building with out even eye contact. Yes, my tattoo (which is a word) is crooked!!! I contacted the owner about the experience and was told that what happened was unacceptable and offered to try to fix it if I drove to Lawrence. She never once offered to come to me or to give me a refund!! The artist did not discuss the pric...e with me beforehand and I feel like it was overpriced. I gave them a chance to somewhat make things right...as right as can be with a crooked tattoo before leaving a negative review as I take them very seriously. I feel as though I was wronged and nothing was done to make it right. Poor artistry, ZERO attention to detail and very poor customer service. That being said, I worked with only one artist. I went to Skin Illustrations yesterday to get my first tattoo in 17 years. Koos was my artist and he was amazing. He made sure the tattoo had perfect placement to my liking before he started and helped me decide on the color and everything so it would come out looking perfect and it did! I am in love with my tattoo! I will definitely be returning for more. The atmosphere is clean and welcoming. Everyone is super nice and relaxed. I have gotten two tattoo's here myself, but that was back in 2008-09.  I cant remember the artist's name that did mine, but I was very pleased with his work.  Recently, however, I took my sister here to get her first tattoo.  We walked in and spoke with the artist "Koos".  He looked at some pictures of what my sister had in mind (a dragon) and said he could definitely do what she was showing him and that he would add his own style to it.  She decided to make an appointment with him and so glad she did.  His work is AWESOME!  He was very professional and didn't take any breaks while working on her, which I thought was great.  This being her first tattoo, my sister was very nervous, but Koos was understanding and didnt make her uncomfortable at all.  It took him about two hours to complete her tattoo and she was so pleased with it!  We will both be going back for more of his work.  If you need a tattoo ask for "Koos"! I've been here twice in the last 5 years.  My go to guy is Lance.  He is one talkative guy.  if you are in the chair don't worry about carrying on the conversation.  he will keep your mind off of getting needled with his stories.  he is super friendly and will work on ideas with you until you get the right tattoo.  he won't be offended if you don't like his ideas.   Overall, I like this place.  it's clean.  most of the staff is friendly.  the prices are reasonable. I regret going here so much. The staff is horribly unprofessional and the work is awful. I went in for a tattoo. It seemed alright at first, but all my "artist" did was bad mouth the owner and keep saying he didn't think he'd be there longer. That should have been the first clue to get out of there. Silly me.My tattoo was finished quickly and looked good. The "artist" said I could come back in a few weeks to get anything touched up for free. Few weeks later, I go back to get some retouching before moving back to Chicago. I walked in and learned he no longer worked there since he moved 2 hours west. Great. The little girl, who was also rude, proceeded to tell me she would ~try to get a hold of him and see if he'd come out and redo it. Never heard from anyone. So I moved back to Chicago with a screwed up tattoo that is going to cost me more than I originally paid for to get fixed. I told the artist that I wanted an owl with a pink bow and a pink "s" on the belly. I let him have the freedom to do what ever he wanted on the rest of it. This place is awful!! The staff is completely unprofessional and trashy. The interior was dirty and outdated. I went in for a helix piercing and even though nobody else was in the shop it took forever for the receptionist to greet me and check me in. She was a flake and acted like I was an inconvenience. The other artists were joking around and belching and making jokes about cleaning the "AIDS" off of some equipment. When the artist took me back to his station I waited forever because he couldn't find the ring I wanted. He was digging through drawers of random jewelry to find what I wanted. Nothing seemed to be kept in sterile packaging. He showed me some pieces and I noticed his hands where really dirty and he had long nails with dirt under them. I went here to get my tragus pierced. Months went by and it wasent healing I got a painful bump which is normal but i went back to ask why it wasent healing I did everything they said to do.I sat through him piercing me the first time dropping the jewlery multipul times then when I went back he took the jewlery out looked at my ear then could not get the jewlery back in so he REPIERCED it..... so so painful. So I eventually I got fed up going back there and went to my normal piercing and tattoo place (kings) he took one look and heard my story and felt so bad for me he replaced the stud for barely anything.. Apparently what they pierced me with was so low quality that me cleaning it made it start to tarnish and the ball on the outside was far too large it got caught on everything making anything painful. After two days of doing what MY pierced said to do  and with the new stud its almost completely healed and no pain. I can finialy sleep. Read Less

My fiance just got a tattoo from there and the guy was really rude. Wasn't helpful at all and acted like we were  inconveniencing him. I don't know if they do good tattoos here or not, because I couldn't get past the rude girl who answers the phone and makes the appointments. They won't contact you via email. They don't make appointments over the phone. If you go in, they will make you an appointment for a later date, but don't change the appointment, because you have to go back in to make another appointment because they don't make appointments over the phone unless you leave a deposit. Went here to get an ear cartilage piercing and got pierced by Jo. Hands down the best experience I've ever had with getting a piercing.I told her some of the issues I was having with my last piercer; my 1st cartilage wasn't healing correctly (I went back to him once already and he didn't even look at it, just gave me some general directions that didn't work) and my nose ring giving my skin some irritation due to the jewelry he pierced me with (I thought that was just how the piercing looked with my skin). She was completely honest with me about a future dermal piercing I was interested in, telling me she wouldn't recommend it because of her experience with them.She actually taught me new things about after care that I thought I knew everything about after getting 9 other piercings and a tattoo. After she was done giving me the piercing, she changed out the jewelry in the cartilage piercing I was having trouble with, telling me that the jewelry I got pierced with was way too small for the area so it didn't have room to heal correctly. She also gave me a better quality nose ring for free, not even asking for extra money for it. All I was expected to pay for was the new piercing.I was blown away by how personal the service felt, definitely not something I've received at other shops. I felt like she actually cared about my piercings as much as I did, even though it was the first time I had ever been there. There's no question that I'll be going back for my future piercings! I just got my eyebrow pierced here. I've never been tattooed or pierced before, so I felt a little intimidated when I first walked in. However, that quickly changed. A guy greeted me and took my money and whatnot for my piercing and he was very friendly. He made small-talk kinda jokes and  definitely mad me feel at ease, but he never lost his professionalism.The piercer, Jo, is the same way. She was very friendly and easy going, yet still very professional. I am very happy with my eyebrow. I was in and out in 30 minutes, and I feel like I could call or go in if I had any questions or problems.The place is clean and open. The sofa is mega comfy.My sister is a piercer in another state and when I told her about the place and their practices (their set up, home care, that kind of stuff) she said it sounds like a great place. I didn't shop around, but from what my sister said, the prices are where they should be for a quality establishment.I would highly recommend Skin Illustrations. Read Less

I got my first tat here 7 years ago, a cover up done by Brandon. It still looks brand new and I've been told it looks like an oil painting on my body. I'm back after long last and Brandon is working on a half-sleeve on my right arm, and soon to come a full sleeve for my left and a side tat. Both of my tattoos are custom and the artist that did them nailed exactly what I was looking for. I would definitly recommend going to this parlor to get your ink done. I've heard good things about this tattoo place, but unfortunately when I went in, the guy that did my tattoo was in a hurry and I got the sense that he didn't want to be there. He rushed through my tattoo and made really rude comments to me while he working on me. I can understand if you're having a bad day, but the one place you shouldn't work while you're having a bad day, is a tattoo parlor. I felt really uncomfortable and felt as if I was being an inconvenience to him by being there. when he got done with the outline, he didn't switch over to a different needle to fill in the rest, he just used the outline needle to finish, which really sucked!! Now the area that was tattooed is bruised and severely sore. I've had tattoos before and I know for sure that they shouldn't hurt this bad. I know if I do go back (which I'll probably stick with Iruzumis), I definitely won't use the guy that did mine...Won't say any names, but I'm sure if you go in there and come across him, you'll know who he is. I went to at least 5 other shops in town before finding this shop and I was impressed with how clean and professional it is.
