He took his time, got to know me, and made sure I had time to take my eyes and mind off of the designs to look back with fresh eyes and really consider all the aspects of what he would be doing for me. My friend and I came to visit Indianapolis for the first time and decided to get a tattoo together. We did our research before getting here and found this place. Before i sing the praises of Conan's work and the experience, let me address some of the negs you might see posted. HE. IS. THAT. GOOD. So that translates into you might have to wait a bit. If a tattoo is an impulse buy for you, there are plenty of others out there. If you want a true artist, one who spends several hours with you first just to understand who you are and the significance of your tattoo, you're at the right place. Even Conan's technique is different. He achieves incredible detail by layering in ink. This potentially means several sessions. Again, if you are an impulse buyer who needs it now, you can find shops where you sit for a few hours and you're done. Conan's approach to quality in life permeates his work. Read Less

Conan has done two tattoos for me and I hope we'll be able to do several more together. He is a wonderfully talented artist and a genuinely good guy. What a great atmosphere! I went in for a consultation with Jaydee, and I felt so valued and completely comfortable. He scheduled 3 hours just to talk to me. He was so easy going and pleasant. Obviously when getting a tattoo you want your artist to be an AMAZING ARTIST.  That's a given.  Conan is exactly that, and much more.  He is an amazing and unique artist.  Then you discover that he is also an incredibly compassionate, warm, wickedly intelligent, and sensitive human being as well.  I've worked with two other tattoo artists before, and both were good artists, but super quirky, as one might expect artists to be.  Conan is so personable and deeply cares about the entire experience his clients are receiving.  I was referred to Conan by a good friend of mine, who had a couple of tattoos done by him over the years.  I have always admired her tattoos, and since moving back to the area, I was excited to meet her artist and see what he might suggest for cleaning up two tattoos I've had done by other artists.  One of my tattoos is a little dated, and I'm sensitive about it's placement and style.  Not once did Conan say something negative about the pieces I have.  Given his talent, he could easily be arrogant and people would forgive it because he is that good.  How refreshing that he is not that way AT ALL.The studio has a very home-like vibe, with tons of all of the artists' work displayed.  It is clean, inviting, and inspiring.  I initially visited the studio with my husband, who was also having a previous tattoo added upon.  I hadn't fully decided if or when I was going to have my tattoos worked on further.  But witnessing his skill and the discussion and planning process with my husband...my mind started turning!  Looking around at the art hanging everywhere (and you can find much of Voluta's artists' works on their website; Conan, Michele, and Jaydee), seeing the variety and uniqueness of each piece, combined with the comfortable and warm atmosphere...I knew I was going to approach Conan to see if he could help me love my own pieces as much as I was loving the art on his walls.  After the work he did yesterday, I already do love my art, and it's not quite completed.He spent much time with me prior to beginning the inking process getting to know me, what my artistic sensibilities were, and offering ideas as he got to know what my eye was drawn to.  He is a true collaborator, which is incredibly important in his line of work.  For someone as talented as Conan, he could easily be cocky and make the experience all about the glorification of his own work.  But as I said, Conan is far from that kind of person.  If you are willing to let the work speak for itself and don't want the grandstanding that a lot of tattoo artists do to promote their work, then Conan is your guy!In both visits (the first with my husband, and the second for my tattoo session) I met Jaydee, who was working with another client, music was playing, there was lots of discussion and laughter...you truly feel like you're being welcomed into someone's home and family.  You feel taken care of and respected; they are as interested in getting to know YOU as they are in putting beautiful art on your body. So if you care about the experience you are receiving, want incredible artwork on your body, and maybe walk away with some new friends...you should without a doubt go to Voluta.  I can't wait to go back! I am not a tattoo collector. I was referred to Conan for reconstructive/restorative tattoos. I read some negative comments regarding the scheduling process and referring to Conan as a "pretentious artist". Admittedly, I was a little "put off" at first by the auto response email but persisted because he was highly recommended by my plastic surgeon. Once the initial consultation was done, scheduling has been easy and convenient. I would encourage you to think why it would be so difficult to access a tattoo artist.....and now I'll tell you....he is that good and in high demand. I do not consider him to be a pretentious artist although he has every right to be. I find him to be an extremely talented artist, mindful of his clients needs, and fun to hang with. The studio is beautiful, filled with wonderful music,his original artwork and all kinds of great eye candy to distract you. While my tattoo is not yet , complete, I can already see the changes it is making in my life. When I look down at my arm I no longer see terrible burn scars, I see a gorgeous work of art. I do not feel as self conscious showing my arms and have recently been seen in public in my string bikini with no cover up. I told Conan that all my life most people who see my burns usually avert their eyes or look at me with pity, it made me feel like a freak.....well no one is looking away from me anymore Conan, they are turning to look. I have had my experiences with traditional tattoo shops, places where you walk in, someone you hardly know spends an hour or two tattooing a permanent design on your skin, and you walk out to never be seen again. Now having had 3 tattoos covered, I can not stress the importance in doing research before getting a tattoo. As someone who has been frequenting Voluta for over 2 years, I can highly recommend them to anybody who only wants the best in tattooing. To describe Voluta as a tattoo parlor is a complete injustice; Voluta breaks the mold. They operate differently from most shops, you can’t walk in, you can’t call, and you can’t pick your design from flash on the wall. There is no blaring rock music, no scary looking people, just artists who care about you and your tattoo. Any body who walks in is treated like family. The atmosphere is so warm and comfortable; it’s like having a tattoo artist in your own living room. Conan Lea is phenomenally talented and pushes the boundaries of tattooing. Conan has created all of my tattoos, listening to what I want and producing more than I could ever imagine. He has custom designed all of my pieces, drawing them directly onto my skin so that they best compliment my form. Looking through his galleries you will find an artist who is versatile and fully capable of realism to abstract. I love my tattoos and I couldn’t be any prouder to show them off. If you are looking to get a tattoo tomorrow for cheap, then Voluta is not the place for you. If you take pride in your skin and are willing to spend the time to have an absolutely stunning custom piece of art on your person that receives comments and turns heads every where you go, then this is your place. Conan's work speaks for itself we can all see that from his web galleries. What you won't see there are the book cases full of artistic inspiration from the masters to the macabre (no flash here) that block the view of countless awards he's won from shows across the country. He's too modest to boast. We just won some hardware in Miami for a back-piece of his I proudly wear. For my back-piece I wrote a story of what I wanted the artwork to convey and let him have at it. I gave him no photographic references, just my story. He interpreted it and blasted out an awesome piece. I can't say enough about this place. He's created his own tattoo-nirvana in downtown Indy.
