A friend of mine recommended this tattoo shop to me and I decided to contact one of the artists. Communication was minimal from the start, but I looked past it and decided to give the guy a chance because I really liked his work. Due to several cancellations, I was able to get in one night after work. I was very appreciative, and the guy ended up doing a phenomenal job on my ink. After about a month of healing, I realized some color didn't take and was told that I could come back for a touch-up. I contacted the artist and after some time, he replied back. His weekends were booked, so I let him know I could come on a weekday after work. After several attempts of reaching him yet again, he told me I could come in later that evening. As soon as I got there, he was with a client. I didn't mind waiting, since I got there a little early. I was then taken to his station and asked if another artist could make the corrections because the tattoo he was working on would take another 2 hours or so. Since he told me he trusted them, I said okay only because I drove all the way there and didn't want to take the trip for nothing. I told the other artist what I wanted done and they said they were able to do that for me. After 5 minutes or so, the job was done. I looked at it and realized, the artist did their own thing and not what I asked. I was crushed, but didn't know how to tell them; I knew my tattoo couldn't be corrected. We showed the final look to the original artist and even he acted a little surprised. Anyway, I would have given this place 5 stars until my tattoo was ruined. I'm now stuck with a tattoo that I'm unhappy with. This all could have been prevented if he would have told me things came up and to come in another day.

I feel really bad writing this review since I've been coming to get tattoos done here for 4 years now and have always had a great experience. I love Chuey's work and everyone is always super friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, Ashley doesn't know what she is doing and I received a tattoo that looks absolutely awful and like a 3rd grader did it, when it should have been a really simple tattoo. I tried to get it touched up and due to a death in the family I was unable to come. I had called the next weekend to reschedule and Ashley's words were "you didn't show up so you messed up my whole schedule I can't book touch ups on weekends anymore". As someone who works in customer service, you don't say that, and you accommodate your customers, especially when your mess up is the reason they now need to come in. I live over an hour away now and still made the drive to come to Dark Heart Tattoo, and have referred numerous family members and friends to Dark Heart, I won't be returning due to the lack of customer service and just an over all shitty job on my tattoo.

I don't usually make complaints , but this one I believe needs mentioning. I normally go to Chuy great tattoo artist but I had an appointment with him today which is Friday August fourth I have been texting him since Tuesday asking him what he charges per hour I can see that he read my text, but never answered my question , that was Wednesday, so yesterday Thursday, I asked him if he would please answer my question. This morning I wake up and he cancels my appointment telling me to choose a different artist. I respect Chuy's work but I think he was very disrespectful to me and unprofessional by doing such an act of unprofessionalism by canceling my appointment because I ask what he charges per hour so I could pay him in Cash but never got a response.. and then canceling my appointments that I waited three months to get into see him !! Very disappointed in you Chuy I hope nobody does that to you.

I recently came to Dark Heart for a tattoo to celebrate the birth of my daughter and I must say that it was a fantastic experience. The shop is first rate with a great chill vibe to make it comfortable. All the staff I interacted with were extremely friendly and helpful, particularly my artist Rachel who did such a fantastic job on my tattoo for an extremely fair price. I highly recommend this shop for anyone in the Crystal Lake area! Thank you all so much, I will definitely be coming back for more!

Chuy was my artist and I cannot say enough good things about him. I gave him an idea and he ran with it. My tat is better than I ever would imagine. My husband tried to come in to make an appointment, but your door was jammed into the building. He awkwardly tried to get inside while everyone inside just watched him without helping. He finally gave up because he didn't want to break your door (and of course because he was embarrassed as hell), walked back to the car, told me the story, then forced us to drive off. 5 stars because I haven't stopped laughing for about 3 days, but if my husband asks, I gave you 1 star.

My family and I went into the shop to get similar tattoos for my son. Everyone was super nice and accommodating and they had no problem with 6 of us coming in together, Zach and Rachel did our tattoos and they all turned out fantastic. They were able to take our ideas and make them look great. This was my 12th tattoo from various shops and this one by Zach is by far the cleanest. Would definitely return and recommend!

Firstly I'd like to say that this shop is awesome, my experience probably wasn't as amazing as the other people who've been here, but I digress.This place is clean, friendly, and overall gave me zero anxiety that most newcomers like me experience when going into a tattoo shop. My experience itself is why I give the place a 4/5 stars, and even so I would still return here in a heartbeat if I decided to acquire any more tattoos. I was tattooed by Zac, who did an exceptional job at helping me find exactly what I wanted. Getting my tribal heart was quick, clean, and was done at a reasonable price that I liked. I got the tattoo, came back for a touch up due to a tiny bit of fade, once it healed I noticed there was a minimal error in the line work of the heart, and I returned once more to receive a final touch up from Joe, only because I felt like making Zac tattoo me again would give him the impression that I was dissatisfied with the work he gave me. Mistakes happen and it's what makes humans human. No bad emotions towards him or the shop as a whole for this barely noticeable mistake. After the final touchup healed, there were a few more mistakes present, but so barely noticeable unless looked upon up close. Overall, I'm happy and satisfied with the work I received from this shop, and I'd recommend anyone to them for an example of how a tattoo shop should be run. Special thanks to both Zac and Joe for putting up with my picky ass self.

While I may not be able to sing praises, I would undoubtedly SHOUT them from the rooftops. I really needed to get a new tatt ( it had been almost 20 years since my last...) and first, let me say Zac did an AMAZING job. He not only did a stellar job, but carried an engaging conversation all the while doing so. Then there's Joe. One can tell off the bat that calling him a stand up guy is an understatement. He truly has a passion for his craft, runs the cleanest shop I have seen - yes I would eat off the floor (after even a 10 second rule) and the decor makes the wait almost as cool as the tatt experience itself. With so many tattoo shops to choose from, this one makes the choice a no brainer. Go see these guys. They will treat you right.

I just want to say that the overall feel and attentiveNess of this shop is great. I was recommended here by a friend. The artist I had was a real nice woman. She was a great artist, loved what she drew up for me. The problem then came in when she tattooed it on me but then added her own creativeness to it without asking. I get that your an artist, but I feel if you add things above and beyond what was ok'd on the sketch you should ask permission not forgiveness. That is permenant. There is nothing I can do now to take off what she added. I am just an average person paycheck to paycheck who has to save up money to even get a tattoo paying about 100 an hour and then on top tipping a good percentage. It sucks when you spend this money and you are not happy. I could have been spared if she would have just checked in with me before adding her own twist above what was drawn. I only wanted words. Not random shading in between and around those words that now looks like bruises. I had other plans to add more to it later. If she thought it looked bare she could have asked me first and i would have told her no. I love the shop.. I just wish I would have gone with a different artist. Overall I am completely bummed about my tattoo. I hope you have a better expierence.

I want everyone to see it- and they do, I literally get asked daily who does my tattoos. CHUY! He turned my original pudgy alien into an absolutely stunning geisha (see photo) and then into the most legit Japanese sleeve I could have asked for. His professionalism, humor, and silent tattoo machines were what kept me sane through 8 sessions to finish! It is hard to express into words how creative he is and how intentional he is with placing the color, and small details that you do actually end up noticing. His line work and noticeable "style" is consistent and exceptional.If you are looking for any sort of tattoo, I would recommend that you see Chuy. I found him on the Instagram "Discover" page on night when I was looking to find a local artist to help bring my god-awful tattoo and turn it into what I had always been dreaming of (@tatu_chuy).I can't say thanks enough to Chuy for taking over my arm and turning it into a beautiful piece of art! We still have a session or so left, but trusting him with designing the entire thing and choosing colors was the best thing I did!I cannot wait to come back and get some new ink - this place knows what they are doing. After moving from California where I had a great tattoo artist with whom I'd had over 30 cumulative hours of work by, I didn't think I'd ever find a place I'd love as much. I am ELATED with Dark Heart Tattoo!!! Not only was the shop easy to find, it was spotless inside, and everyone that I've spoken with has been down to Earth, professional and knowledgeable. They all seem to have a genuine love for their trade! I had my piece done by Mark and it is now hands down my favorite tattoo! He packed an incredible amount of detail in a small space and the heavy line work is utterly perfect. I would give them more than 5 stars all around if I could.

My wife and I recently got tattoos by Joe. She got a full sleeve which looks sooooooo o o amazing we can't go anywhere without people commenting on how bright and on point it is as as far as color and line work. I got a decent sized piece on my lower leg and it soooooo o o o amazing looking. Joe is great and all the staff seem on point. I have never heard a bad complaint from any of the customers that come in and leave during my session. If you live in crystal lake and are not going here you obviously didn't do your homework.

I normally go to Chuy great tattoo artist but I had an appointment with him today which is Friday August fourth I have been texting him since Tuesday asking him what he charges per hour I can see that he read my text, but never answered my question , that was Wednesday, so yesterday Thursday, I asked him if he would please answer my question. This morning I wake up and he cancels my appointment telling me to choose a different artist. I respect Chuy's work but I think he was very disrespectful to me and unprofessional by doing such an act of unprofessionalism by canceling my appointment because I ask what he charges per hour so I could pay him in Cash but never got a response.. and then canceling my appointments that I waited three months to get into see him !! Very disappointed in you Chuy I hope nobody does that to you.

I recently came to Dark Heart for a tattoo to celebrate the birth of my daughter and I must say that it was a fantastic experience. The shop is first rate with a great chill vibe to make it comfortable. All the staff I interacted with were extremely friendly and helpful, particularly my artist Rachel who did such a fantastic job on my tattoo for an extremely fair price. I highly recommend this shop for anyone in the Crystal Lake area! Thank you all so much, I will definitely be coming back for more!

Chuy was my artist and I cannot say enough good things about him. I gave him an idea and he ran with it. My tat is better than I ever would imagine. My husband tried to come in to make an appointment, but your door was jammed into the building. He awkwardly tried to get inside while everyone inside just watched him without helping. He finally gave up because he didn't want to break your door (and of course because he was embarrassed as hell), walked back to the car, told me the story, then forced us to drive off. 5 stars because I haven't stopped laughing for about 3 days, but if my husband asks, I gave you 1 star.

Everyone was super nice and accommodating and they had no problem with 6 of us coming in together, Zach and Rachel did our tattoos and they all turned out fantastic. They were able to take our ideas and make them look great. This was my 12th tattoo from various shops and this one by Zach is by far the cleanest. Would definitely return and recommend!

Firstly I'd like to say that this shop is awesome, my experience probably wasn't as amazing as the other people who've been here, but I digress.This place is clean, friendly, and overall gave me zero anxiety that most newcomers like me experience when going into a tattoo shop. My experience itself is why I give the place a 4/5 stars, and even so I would still return here in a heartbeat if I decided to acquire any more tattoos. I was tattooed by Zac, who did an exceptional job at helping me find exactly what I wanted. Getting my tribal heart was quick, clean, and was done at a reasonable price that I liked. I got the tattoo, came back for a touch up due to a tiny bit of fade, once it healed I noticed there was a minimal error in the line work of the heart, and I returned once more to receive a final touch up from Joe, only because I felt like making Zac tattoo me again would give him the impression that I was dissatisfied with the work he gave me. Mistakes happen and it's what makes humans human. No bad emotions towards him or the shop as a whole for this barely noticeable mistake. After the final touchup healed, there were a few more mistakes present, but so barely noticeable unless looked upon up close. Overall, I'm happy and satisfied with the work I received from this shop, and I'd recommend anyone to them for an example of how a tattoo shop should be run. Special thanks to both Zac and Joe for putting up with my picky ass self.

While I may not be able to sing praises, I would undoubtedly SHOUT them from the rooftops. I really needed to get a new tatt ( it had been almost 20 years since my last...) and first, let me say Zac did an AMAZING job. He not only did a stellar job, but carried an engaging conversation all the while doing so. Then there's Joe. One can tell off the bat that calling him a stand up guy is an understatement. He truly has a passion for his craft, runs the cleanest shop I have seen - yes I would eat off the floor (after even a 10 second rule) and the decor makes the wait almost as cool as the tatt experience itself. With so many tattoo shops to choose from, this one makes the choice a no brainer. Go see these guys. They will treat you right.

I just want to say that the overall feel and attentiveNess of this shop is great. I was recommended here by a friend. The artist I had was a real nice woman. She was a great artist, loved what she drew up for me. The problem then came in when she tattooed it on me but then added her own creativeness to it without asking. I get that your an artist, but I feel if you add things above and beyond what was ok'd on the sketch you should ask permission not forgiveness. That is permenant. There is nothing I can do now to take off what she added. I am just an average person paycheck to paycheck who has to save up money to even get a tattoo paying about 100 an hour and then on top tipping a good percentage. It sucks when you spend this money and you are not happy. I could have been spared if she would have just checked in with me before adding her own twist above what was drawn. I only wanted words. Not random shading in between and around those words that now looks like bruises. I had other plans to add more to it later. If she thought it looked bare she could have asked me first and i would have told her no. I love the shop.. I just wish I would have gone with a different artist. Overall I am completely bummed about my tattoo. I hope you have a better expierence.

I want everyone to see it- and they do, I literally get asked daily who does my tattoos. CHUY! He turned my original pudgy alien into an absolutely stunning geisha (see photo) and then into the most legit Japanese sleeve I could have asked for. His professionalism, humor, and silent tattoo machines were what kept me sane through 8 sessions to finish! It is hard to express into words how creative he is and how intentional he is with placing the color, and small details that you do actually end up noticing. His line work and noticeable "style" is consistent and exceptional.If you are looking for any sort of tattoo, I would recommend that you see Chuy. I found him on the Instagram "Discover" page on night when I was looking to find a local artist to help bring my god-awful tattoo and turn it into what I had always been dreaming of (@tatu_chuy).I can't say thanks enough to Chuy for taking over my arm and turning it into a beautiful piece of art! After moving from California where I had a great tattoo artist with whom I'd had over 30 cumulative hours of work by, I didn't think I'd ever find a place I'd love as much. I am ELATED with Dark Heart Tattoo!!! Not only was the shop easy to find, it was spotless inside, and everyone that I've spoken with has been down to Earth, professional and knowledgeable. They all seem to have a genuine love for their trade! I had my piece done by Mark and it is now hands down my favorite tattoo! He packed an incredible amount of detail in a small space and the heavy line work is utterly perfect. I would give them more than 5 stars all around if I could.

She got a full sleeve which looks sooooooo o o amazing we can't go anywhere without people commenting on how bright and on point it is as as far as color and line work. I got a decent sized piece on my lower leg and it soooooo o o o amazing looking. Joe is great and all the staff seem on point. I have never heard a bad complaint from any of the customers that come in and leave during my session. If you live in crystal lake and are not going here you obviously didn't do your homework.
