Usually, I have a tattoo idea completely etched out in my head, and in some cases printed out (off the internet) so I can stare at it in the weeks leading up to my tattoo- so I KNOW that I'll not regret the decision. I went to Black Ink for my 4th tattoo. But, this was the first time that I didn't really know exactly how the artist was going to "realize" my vision. I was leaving it up to him or her to blow my mind with their art. A gamble for the conservative thinker (I'm not a conservative, btw). I made an appointment with Dan, who came highly recommended. Dan drew a design on with a bunch of colored sharpies. His first version was not really my style. It felt weird to tell him this, after he'd spent 10-15 drawing it up on me. His design wasn't bad, it just wasn't ME. So immediately, things were slightly awkward. He modified his drawing, and the 2nd one looked more suitable. I asked him if he thought it would come out bad-ass looking. His answer was that it only matters what I think... Translation: "Not Really." That's like what you would say to a person who's getting a tattoo of two unicorns having sex.NOTE TO DAN: when a customer asks if you think your work will come out bad-ass, just say "YES." As a result, I was nervous as Hell for the first three hours. Dan didn't talk much, as he was deep in the Zone. Luckily, Frankie was there to keep the conversation fun. I just wanted reassurance that my tat was gonna be good. I had basically told myself that this was it- I'm finally going to REGRET getting a tattoo! I had five hours to sit with this realization. Understand that your "project" will undergo many stages in a 5-hour period. I wasn't sure WTF was going on with it for those first three hours. I was basically bracing myself for this tattoo to be a piece of crap. However, in the last 2 hours, I was starting to catch a glimpse of what Dan's master vision was. It had begun to take shape. I was finally at ease. Also, in those last two hours Dan had come out if his trance. He was in the home stretch, and conversation picked up. He's actually a cool guy. I'm sure I got under his skin a little bit, but it's only fair because he was under mine for five hours. Pun intended! Fast forward to now- It's taken many days to completely wrap my brain around what my eyes are seeing every time I look at my tattoo- and I DO look at it a lot! It is quite the work of art! It definitely exceeds what I had in mind for the tattoo. What Dan threw together in only 5 hours has taken me over a week to completely unravel. There are layers upon layers of stuff going on. Very happy with it! My daughters like it, my wife gets turned on by it, etc. Good stuff! Great place that is very clean and sterile. Good music playing as well. An engaging experience! I definitely recommend it, and will certainly go back myself! Read Less
