Skin Deep Ink is clean and professionally run. It has a very casual, collaborative and inclusive vibe. They're prices are what you would expect of quality, custom tattoos. I wish I could rate Skin Deep Ink more than once. I originally found this shop to do my son's tattoo. He has an intellectual disability so I was looking for a place that was clean, with great artists, interested in the style of tattoo he wanted, AND someone who would get my son. Within minutes of meeting Mark I knew this would be a great fit. Mark spent a good amount of time showing my son pictures of his work to compare different colors and techniques to ensure he understood the limitations and that he would get the tattoo he wanted. He did this without talking down to my son or being patronizing. He was open to adjusting the design so my son could do a short or long sitting as needed. In the end, it took two sessions and my son was thrilled with the result. I contact Mark several months later to do a tattoo for me. We spoke briefly about what I wanted and the design he showed me the day of my appointment was exactly what I had in mind. I requested a few minor changes that he made with ease and I left several hours later with a gorgeous tattoo that is easily my favorite among all the others. I came back to Skin Deep Ink after Tom did a great job with my first tattoo on my ankle. My second tattoo was very detailed, containing small leaves on the tree of life. Mark and Tina are great business owners and run a clean and professional shop. I have had work done by both Mark and Jeff and have been extremely satisfied with all my work. I had tattoos done in my years fresh out of technical school. When I moved to Hawaii I had a couple more added. When I moved back to CT my BFF gave me a gift certificate for a new tattoo place. The owner was just becoming established in a storefront so I didn't know what to expect. What I found on my visits was a business that had friendly attentive staff and the tattoo and piercing areas as clean as a hospital. The owner and his wife were using top of the line equipment and ink's. I was sold on the place very quickly as the owner was willing to take my strange ideas and making them happen beyond my expectation. I had gone to a convention for tattoo and piercing and ended up with three first place awards. Who would have thought that? I highly recommend Skin Deep Ink to anyone for their tattoo or piercing, whether it's the first one or the tenth. I got my first tattoo here by John Kang who specializes in black and white realism. I'm really happy with how my tattoo came out even though it isn't finished. Kang and the shop is very clean! During my tattoo join must have switched gloves and cleaned my arm over 10 times. All the artist are really good at what they say and very patient. There's a variety of artist so I'm sure anyone could find one that has a specialty they want. I'm happy I came here for my first tattoo. Read Less

Joe did a fantastic job on my tattoo! A true artist! I sent a descriptive email including pictures of what style I wanted from each pic. His sketch was the perfect combination of what I wanted so I didn't even ask for any changes. This is the only place I go to now. They've given me six tattoos and I love each of them. The artists here are amazing. The only negative reviews I have heard about is them drawing things a little differently than asked. This is, what I think, is an artist's job - to put their own twist on a tattoo. I've heard of many tattoo parlors doing this though, it's not very uncommon. They also have a rule of (I think) only one extra person coming with you to the station, so unless you're okay with having your group wait in the lobby I recommend only bringing one extra person along. Also, the wait can sometimes be extensive so bring a phone or something to keep you entertained. Seriously, the wait is worth it. The needles and area is clean and open. The artists are friendly with their own customized stations that really give off a feeling of who they are, which I really like. I have had work done by Tom and Joe. Tom is better if you want an exact replica of a tattoo. He doesn't go way off the idea but tweaks it to fit your style best. He's quiet but likes to joke around and is very friendly. Joe does more advanced work and is a bit more serious. The first time I had scheduled a tattoo with him, I wanted it slightly tweaked and it bothered him, but it wasn't too big of a deal and it ended up coming out better than expected. He takes the idea and turns it into what he believes will look the best on his clients. He's fantastic with color and shading. Even though I had gotten black & grey he added white ink that really added a lot to it. He's the best person to go to if you have a general idea of a tattoo but are willing to have it slightly changed. After having several tattoos done with him he recognizes me and is much more friendly and talkative and willing to work on an idea with me to get something we both think looks good.I go for a traditional American looking tattoo and these artists are great with that style. I love the artists that work here and the whole vibe of the parlor itself. Although I'm now living in Virginia, I plan to return there for each of my tattoos. They're art is reliably good and always makes me want another as soon as I can heal. Recommend. Read Less

John Kang is so great!He has done a number of tattoos on my boyfriend which all have come out beautifully - some color, some black and white and really brings each his pieces to life- as he is working on him for a lower leg sleeve so of course the recommendation for me was to go to him if I ever wanted anything..I had only a set of tiny braille dotted initials tattooed prior by someone else years ago so I was a bit nervous about getting something more and John was so nice and did such a great job assuring me I was sitting well during my appointment- being professional and personable.I went in just showing him a few ideas of what I wanted and he drew something up himself, showed me, made a minor addition at my request, and got to work and I absolutely love it!He works meticulously and really focuses on his work to make sure everything looks clean and lines are sharp.As for the shop itself- super clean and when I've been there to visit while he was working on my boyfriend I've had just as nice of an experience- he and everyone else in the shop is nice and other artist's work I've seen is beautiful as well. Tina, their piercer and one of the owners- is also great and very sweet and helped me pick out a new bottom belly button ring with a better bar size to replace my old jewelry as the bar was too long for my liking and carefully put it in for me. Had my first appointment at this studio yesterday with Mark. Was well worth the 90 minute drive and 8 month wait! The studio is very clean and the staff makes your stay... entertaining. :)Mark took the time to be sure the sketch met what I was hoping to capture, covered my old tattoo correctly, and explained why he drew certain elements the way he did. Cause let's face it... I am not a tattoo artist and certainly don't know what will look best; Mark does! Compared to other pieces I've had done, outside of the expected pains, Mark made me as comfortable as possible during my appointment. Even when the studio closed on a gorgeous Saturday leaving us as the only ones there, Mark took his time to be sure the tattoo was not only completed, but completed the right way. You could tell he cared about the piece coming out its best!  So far my aftercare has been unexpectedly easy as far as discomfort level. Again, Mark made sure I completely understood what to do before leaving and even going over things to watch for outside of what was on the aftercare paper.For those price hunting or shocked at the wait list some of the artists here have, just keep in mind that it's totally worth it for the time and effort to have a gorgeous piece that you're proud to wear, and is done the right way in a clean and comfortable studio. I woke up one morning and said "I'm getting my first tattoo today." Having had heard good things about Skin Deep Ink from friends I walked in to see if they had any time for me that day. Jeffrey Ash listened to what I wanted and with only two modifications to the drawing it was exactly what I had pictured in my head. The final product of a cursive "J" on my ribs was perfect and the lines crisp and clear. I recommend them 100%. I would never use this place again and my recommendation is if you do- don't get caught in what happened to my girlfriend.   She contracted with one of the artists there. After discussing what she wanted, he indicated he would do a drawing and they would iron out the details. She paid the deposit with the idea that he would provide a tattoo for approval prior to appointment day which was set over a month in advance.  Email after email went unanswered for over a month prior to the schedule tattoo date.  Calls / messages left were not returned either.  No sketch, no sample, no discussion. Assuming this would be addressed  the day of the SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT that she and I both took the day off for work for- the artist was a no show. We waited around about a half hour as the owners / managers (very nice people) couldn't reach him, no excuse, no cancellation phone call. For us- it was another day wasted and I ended up losing money because he failed to be able to keep one appointment let alone follow through on what was discussed.  The management/ owner were very apologetic  and respectful (not their fault for a absent minded artist) and were good enough to return her deposit in cash.  IF you do use them, I would be very clear in your expectations and follow through before putting any deposit down after this experience.
