Iron Bette Tattoo Parlor and its Owner Brad Mrsny; Illustrative ArtistBy Evan HundhausenBrad opened Iron Bette Tattoo Parlor in August 2013. His philosophy in both art and business is patience. "When I rush I make mistakes... It can take up to a week just for me to draw an outline for a customer, but with patience and practice I can do anything." He assures. Brad does traditional tattooing, Americana, bio-organic or what is called cheese, but he specializes in illustrative body art.He has examples of his work on the walls of his shop; a cartoon piranha, a half naked mermaid, a shark. This isn't Brad's first time entering the business world. Years ago he ran a skate shop, but after his inventory was burglarized he abandoned it and went to work in construction. Soon he saved enough money to go to college and attended the University of Northern Colorado where he got his bachelors degree in fine art specializing in ceramic sculpture. His senior thesis was a series of sculptures he made, which now decorate his tattoo parlor. During the day children look through the windows at his sculptures; ceramic baby dolls with vacant eyes, riding unicorns and monsters while toting rifles on their backs. When college was finished he paid galleries to display his sculptures, but there was no guarantee they would sell, so he soon abandoned this idea. One day he talked to his older brother who had been a tattoo artist for years. His brother told him he sometimes made six hundred dollars a day. Inspired Brad got an apprenticeship for six months at The Denver School of Body Art. From there he was picked to work in one of the school's own tattoo shops for a year, but after their shop shut down he was back looking for more construction jobs on craigslist. There he found a location ready for business in Boulder. He couldn't pass up on the opportunity and took over the ready made space located in the same building as the Boulder Drivers License office in the Diagonal Plaza shopping center at 2850 Iris Ave. Daisy is in charge of piercing at Iron Bette. She met Brad at The Denver School of Body Art and they both decided to open the tattoo parlor together. Daisy thought she wanted to be a nurse, but after getting a tattoo at seventeen she realized art was more fun and went looking for a tattoo apprenticeship. Where Brad is more illustrative (surreal baby dolls and monsters) Daisy is more into realism (animals, flowers, and faces).Daisy's most enjoyable challenge is making tattoos look real. Her favorite piece is when she covered up Brad's leg. He had a "Day of the Dead" style tattoo there that looked more cartoon than menacing, so she redid it in her realistic style. "We work in a fun environment," says Daisy about Iron Bette. "Anything you want tattooed we can do it."Brad and Daisy use a Wacom tablet hooked up to their laptop. On this tablet they make drawings digital and can put them on a picture of someone's body. Customers can then see what the tattoo will look like before they get it done. In their spare time they enter art contests on Instagram. Their inspiration comes from artists like Nick Baxter, Nikko Hurtado, Kelly Doty, Theresa Sharp, Megan Massacre and Guy Atchinson for his flow, color, and texture. In the future Brad and Daisy would like to meet other talented artists in the community and teach classes and seminars about tattooing.
