I came in as a walk in in the early afternoon, and it wasn't busy at all. I got Steven I believe as my tattoo artist. He said he just recently moved back to the Sacramento area. I wanted to get a tattoo of my husband's EKG that he had two days before he passed away. This was my first tattoo. I was so nervous about the idea, but I knew I wanted to do it anyway because it meant so much to me. It actually did not hurt nearly as bad as I had expected. After hearing so many good things about this place, I just had to come see it for myself and I was not disappointed at all. My experience here was amazing! I came on a Tuesday afternoon and it wasn't too busy. I probably had to wait about 15 minutes before I got my ear piercing but definitely worth the wait! I needed to get my second lobe redone after a different piercer at another shop had messed up big time on the spacing. Wanted to write this review for Grimace! I recently had been going through a real rough time in my life, and i'm finally coming out of that feeling better so I wanted to get a tattoo commemorating. It was spontaneous, yes, but I couldn't have asked for something more perfect. I called first to see if I could walk in, and the receptionist was super friendly. Once I got to the shop, I waited a bit as people were in front of me and once it was my turn I let the person who would be tattooing me, Grimace, what I wanted. He was so patient with me, I probably changed little things about it 3 different times even though the tattoo would be small. He was very accommodating and made sure I was comfortable every step of the way! We were done in 15-20 minutes, but he still continued to make sure I was okay! He's super friendly too! This is beyond overdue. I've been coming here since '96, when it was referred to as "American Graffiti".Vinny is my artist at this shop. The first piece he did for me is an ohm on the back of my neck with tribal detail. I waited purposely until he returned and I could get in the chair to have him update this piece; it only took 21 years, but well worth the wait. He updated it with fresh colours and a more lotus look.Flash forward to 2018/2019, and 2 days back in town after living in NY for a year, I'm back to have more ink. I walk in with one convoluted idea, and when Vinny shakes his head and tells me why it won't work; he doesn't leave me disappointed. He completely gets what I'm looking for and comes up with something better than I could've imagined.I come back about a month later, needing a piece updated, covered up, just something.I tell him again, what I want; not really knowing how to make it work, but completely trusting him to turn my thoughts into original artwork just for me. Again, not to be disappointed, and completely in love with his idea, which by the way, doesn't cover up the tattoo I was no longer loving or even happy with. He creates a piece that allows the original tattoo to be the subliminal center of the new art piece. After the outline is done, I am literally IN LOVE and beyond excited for the colours to be added. This tattoo was the most painful, and one of the most rewarding to get thru.I adore this artist, for letting me ramble on with my undefined ideas, turning them into unique pieces I am blown away with, and honoured to have on me permanently. I will continue coming to Vinny, knowing the beauty will last forever, and the temporary pain was and is well worth it. I got a small piece done here on Sunday and although I'm definitely good on getting more ink for awhile I know I'll be back here for my next one. First, we came in on Saturday and the place was full of both appointments and walk-ins. The front desk person was great and she tried to get us in same day but we honestly just weren't willing to wait around and preferred to make an appointment. They could take us Sunday which worked perfectly. We sent an email with the photo of the font and phrase we wanted which made things easy and what they drew out for us was perfect. Came in on Sunday and waited a few mins before my sister was in the chair. RJ was great. Very professional and asked about our pain thresholds.  My sister and I are both seasoned tattoo getters, but for newbies this is important and you should really only go to an artist who understands tattoos can and do hurt! They thoroughly cleaned the entire station and chairs after my sisters tattoo was done, then let me go for my run. Very clean, very reasonable in price and extremely professional shop. In my younger years I went to some sketchy shops but these days I will not compromise and this place met every expectation. We decided on a whim to come here for tattoos because it was the closest place to our location at the time haha. Came here the night of 2/24/19 to get my helix bar changed out since I haven't had the chance to change it since I got it pierced at another location months ago. I swear by this place. I've gone here 3 times and gotten a total of 5 piercings, i love them. I'm currently a student from Sac State originally from LA and I will not get my piercings done anywhere but here. if i'm not mistaken, Stan has done all my piercings, and he's just the best. Went in last night to get my first tattoo, it was a very simple, friendly experience. The place was well lit, and the receptionist was very friendly. Ryan did my tattoo, he was patient with my bad descriptions, also friendly. My only complaint is that Yelp says that plastic is accepted, but it's not. They have an off-brand ATM in the lobby. This shop is awesome! I've gotten a small tattoo during a walk in appointment and the staff are very friendly. They have a very clean shop and that's something I always looking for. I've also gotten my septum pierced here and they did such an amazing job. My septum pierced really straight, and I've gotten compliments on it from other piercers when I switched my other piercings. Went in there the Monday of veteran's day weekend. Wasn't to busy. I had an idea in my head of what I wanted but I couldn't really explain it and make sense. Grimace was the poor artist who got stuck with me. Explained what I was looking for, found a pic online to help with the idea, and what I wanted added to it. Once Grimace got that, off he went into the back room. Sometime later, he came back with his idea of what I was saying, after a couple of changes we were off. This was my 1st tattoo so of course I was a bit apprehensive, but I made up my mind that it was going to be done. Maybe and hour or hour and half later. It was done. It was exactly what he had drawn on paper. Grimace was great. I have shoulder issues and he was patient with me moving it around in between him tattooing and adding ink to the needle. Wasn't the most talkative person in the world, but is a solid artist. So solid that I went back 3 days later for another piece to be added. Only issue I have is that he placed a piece of plastic onto the tattoos when he was done to seal it from the air and keep the plasma and other liquids the body produces contained on the art, kind of like Saran Wrap but it just covered the tattoo. My started leaking, for both pieces. My 2nd one started leaking plasma within an hour of being done. Kind of became annoying. Instead of driving back to the shop bc I live in Rancho, I just used duct tape to plug where I was leaking. Sucked taking it off but it got the job done.After the 1st tattoo was done, Grimace asked something about if I was now hooked and ready to get more. Which I did 3 days later, but that was planned. After that 2nd one, I am trying to figure out what and where I am going to get the next one. Literally in tears after I left the shop because I am so happy and in love with my tattoo! This tattoo is close to my heart (for my daughter) and I really wanted to have a good experience getting it done.  I was really diggin the location.  The shop was super clean and artwork is beautifully displayed throughout the shop! They even have an ATM located inside. I came in as a walk in too btw, I am visiting from San Francisco and this was an unexpected night to do this. The girl at the front was really friendly and welcoming. She introduced me to my artist Arthur. The price was very reasonable!     Another thing too is that I didn't know that the shop closed at 10 (I didn't look up the info before coming) and we finished around 11:30. I had came in a little close to 9 so for him to stay later to do this was super awesome!! He also took his time and did not make me feel like he was rushing at all! Arthur was super chill and made me feel comfortable and checked in with me every so often to make sure I was doing alright.  He was nice to talk to but in certain areas I would just shut my eyes and he would just do his thing. I also almost lost my glasses but the girl was nice enough to ask me if they were mine, I had left them in the lobby, oops!! thank you so much!! When Arthur was done, I went to go look at it in the mirror and was beyond happy! It's so pretty! As soon as I stepped outside the shop, I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I cried! This old-house-turned-tattoo-shop is my only experience thus far with tattoo parlors. My husband came here to get his first ever tattoos: black and white arrows with two names in the middle in Hebrew. For a total of two arrows on his forearm, about six inches long each, it was $180 (cash only-- they do have an ATM). Part of the draw of this place was the high Yelp reviews, in addition to the fact that it's an old house (it's beautiful and unique).They accommodate walk-ins and appointments. We called ahead on a Saturday afternoon to make sure the wait time wasn't long, and we didn't have a wait at all, as there were two artists available. It took about an hour from when we walked in until my husband was seated in the chair.We brought in a few different photos that the lady at the front desk synthesized into one photo. Then the tattoo artist made his own sketch of the tattoo and brought it to my husband for his approval. He made a few modifications and then came out with the final product. It took about 30ish minutes for the tattoo to be inked onto his arm. There is another room upstairs with tattoo chairs and a table, in addition to the main parlor area downstairs. There might also be more rooms upstairs that I wasn't aware of. The artists get to play their own music, which is fun. The lady at the front desk was very nice. Also, all the employees have a lot of tattoos, which is comforting, because it's their profession and talent and they wear them proudly. Everything is very sterile, as advertised. I watched the nice front desk lady sterilizing the table and equipment. The interior of the home has been well-painted and maintained. On the front desk, the following words are painted: "no minors, haggling, wimps, and drunks" allowed, along with "no drugs, photos, deals, refunds."They have lots of art on the walls and binders at the front desk if you need inspiration. From the moment I approached American Tradition I knew I made the right choice. The staff support is extremely professional and the location is squeaky clean. Arthur was my artist. He is very talented and approachable. Arthur listened to all my concerns and thoughts. This man is the real deal and his soft touch was greatly appreciated. I have several tattoos but still had some trepidation about communicating exactly what I want. My fear was unfounded and I got exactly what I wanted. Went through Arthur's book and found that he has done amazing work, I booked an appt to get a half sleeve and to cover a tattoo.Arthur spent a long time positioning the template so that I would have a great tattoo and it not just look like a coverup. I really appreciated that he took his time and really cared about what the end result would look like.Now to the tattoo... which you will see in my pics turned out AMAZING!! Long overdue review. I love and trust this place. I got four out of five of my tattoos done here, by three different tattoo artists. All three of the people that tattoo me are great. They're all so friendly and helpful and make the tattoo session go by so quickly and painlessly. I think the prices here are good too. All my tattoos done here were reasonable priced. My tattoos are all pretty small but they ranged from $70-$160. Cash only, with a $60 deposit that goes towards your tattoo. They don't accept appointments online or over the phone. Depends on when you come in, it can be busy. But the wait I experienced isn't so bad. The first time I got my tattoo done, I got a reaction because I used the wrong ointment. I called them for help and they asked me to come in to see the problem, so I did and they kindly helped/advised me how to resolve it and it healed in exactly the time I was told. Welcoming  and friendly staff! Especially Author. I would highly recommend this place because #1, pricings are decent, you pay for what you get and #2, I've gotten tattoos from other artists before but Author is really friendly while you're getting your piece done. What do I mean? Most of the other artists that are working on my pieces seem pretty standoffish, like they just want to do their work and be done with it or they'll only talk if you talk to them. He actually seems to wanna talk to his clients, now I'm not saying every artists needs to talk, I'm just saying Author's vibe/ demeanor doesn't make you feel awkward. Highly recommend this shop and will go back if I am ever up in Sacramento again! My two friends and I were walk-ins at about 6 p.m. on a Saturday night. We wanted matching tattoos. They took us right in and had us fill out the necessary paperwork, looked at our reference photos, drew something up and got right to work on us. All 3 of us at the same time, 2 upstairs and 1 downstairs - and the artist from downstairs came upstairs to check us out to make sure everything was matching. Every one of us love the subtle little differences of our individual tattoos by our different artists - however they are still matching tattoos. I came in today for a walk in and I got a small tattoo of a heart on my wrist. My artist (who I feel bad because I do not remember his name {he had a beard and long hair}) did an amazing job. He placed the outline as many times as it took to get it perfect. He was also really patient and was cracking jokes with me which was nice because it was my first tattoo. It was $60 for a one inch, which is on the pricey side, but they do have signs that say $60 minimum so that was more on my end. Got my first tattoo today!!! When first approaching this place, you are greeted by all the workers. Front desk manager is sweet and kind. I initially had a picture of what I wanted but the tattoo artist RJ Hitchcock made my vision come to life! Now as for the tattooing quality, I couldn't imagine it any better. RJ was kind, very calming, and into his work. He checked to make sure I was okay after a few strokes and altogether, it was a great experience for a first time. I decided to get my first tattoo. After months of deciding on the art work and even longer selecting a location,  my friend and I choose this place. Having someone take a needle to your skin isn't something you want done in a back alley. This place is beyond reproach. It's clean, all the artists very professional with years of experience. They made thoughtful recommendations based upon their knowledge and didn't make me feel like some newbie getting their first tattoo. Getting my artwork done was great. It looks gorgeous and my artist captured my idea wonderfully. He even respected my desire to "breathe thru the pain"  and didn't take it personally. My husband and I walked in about 2 hours before closing to see if we could make an idea I'd had for a long time a reality. The artists working there were very willing to work with me and started by letting me know that my original idea would need to be modified or the tattoo wouldn't age well. I wanted it on a certain day and they were able to do that for me. Grimace was my artist and I was unsure of the tattoo placement. He printed out the script and gave me time to decide with the help of some buddies that accompanied me. Super patient, supportive and kind. Even introduced himself to my friends also. The tattoo itself took no time - maybe 10-15 minutes. He had some light conversation and is very easy to talk to. My girlfriend and I have been looking for a tattoo shop in Sacramento for some time.  We usually travel to Southern California to our artist who specializes in Asian art. Since our next tattoos, were basics script with a simple design, we decided to choose a local shop. After yelping shops fo days and dropping in a few to talk to artists and check out shops we decided on America's Traditional. The 2 staff members we talked to at the front desk were friendly and very helpful. We were set up with Grimus to do our tattoos. He looked like a biker guy but we quickly learned how sweet an gentle he was. He took his time and we had fun with him the entire session.  He did an excellent job on our almost matching tattoos. We came here because of the reviews, however, my wife and I were not impressed with the customer service or the crazy-high prices.It's our 2 year anniversary so we wanted to do a very basic Roman numeral wedding date tattoo no more than 3" long on our arm. They wanted to charge us $240 for both. Not to mention, once the guy that was helping us found out "he was up next" to tattoo, he was clearly disappointment. Almost as if he didn't want to waste his time with a basic tattoo that wasn't going to make him money.They may have great work, but like any other job, there's work you have to do that isn't exciting. Got my first tattoo here today~Walked in on a Monday around 6:30 PM with no wait!I thought I had to go through consultation, but since I already had a design in mind, they said they could do the tattoo on the spot!I was super nervous since it was my first time getting one.This place is super clean, with great service and talented artists.Vinny is so awesome, chill, and very professional~He did a lotus tattoo on my back, which only took like 20 minutes.I am very happy with the results.It came out the way I wanted, just like the picture.They give you an instruction sheet which tells you the after care procedure, super helpful~This place is cash only, so don't forget to stop by at an ATM before coming here.The lady at the front desk is super friendly too.Will definately be coming back for future tattoos! Review for Grimace!!! Yesterday, I had the pleasure of being tattooed by Grimace. When I set my appointment with him a few weeks back, I knew little about the guy; I had just reviewed the reviews here on Yelp and was able to build up confidence that he was the man for the job. I didn't see the sketch until the night of my tattoo and when Grimace walked out with it, I was like: "OMG! That's my puppy"! I even knew what photo he used for the portrait piece (I failed to mention that I went with an American Traditional tattoo of my French Bulldog, Jameson). I didn't want to change a thing! The face, the flowers; the size - PERFECT. Grimace himself was awesome! He joked with my friend and I the entire time. It was literally like you were being tattooed by one of your friends. His lines are clean, he constantly consulted me on the details as he worked on the tattoo (ie: colors/ideas), and he has a very gentle touch (for a tattoo artist). Let me just say this: My Frenchie actually looks alive! His eyes shine and his lil' nose even looks wet. Freaking AMAZING!!!I HIGHLY recommend this man and would not hesitate to return for all of my future pieces (sorry mom - this probably is NOT my last one). It's always hard to find a great shop without another person's recommendation. I went in as a walk-in on Friday the 13th just hoping to get a small tattoo done. This tattoo shop is the best, I wouldn't trust any other shop in Sacto other than them! All too often, shops have just one or two artists who are really really talented and the rest are just...eh. But at American Tradition every single artist that works there is talented and professional in their own right. I've been here twice, the first time for my little brother-in-law and husband to get tattoos commemorating his remission diagnosis after a bout with lymphoma, chemo & radiation (obviously something very important to him) and they both were extremely satisfied with their tattoos! (I can't remember exactly who did them but they both turned out great!)The second time was this past Saturday, I had been following the shop and Rob Junod on Instagram and was very impressed with the quality of work being done there! I scheduled an appointment (which requires a $60 down payment--normal for a shop min) and geared up for the pain/satisfaction of a new tat! My husband decided at the last minute to get one that day too and Rob was accommodating enough to squeeze both of us in! This was my first color tattoo and Rob totally understood what I was looking for and was nice to talk to while both of us were on the table. I've often run across tattoo artists in the past who are too bothered to make decent conversation.
