I dropped in with no appointment to see Joe the piercer. I had a cartilage piercing from 2011 that had sort of closed up from not having had any jewelry in it for 2 years, and I was hoping Joe could work his magic and salvage it. That he did, and despite using his skills, time and tools to help me, he only charged me for the jewelry. I signed up with a man whose name doesn't really matter here, last week. I made an appointment and gave them the $40 deposit they requested.  I had to cancel because, the timing isn't right and we are leaving the state soon.  But, even though I contacted them a day or two later, they will not return my deposit.  They never told me it was non-refundable.  I texted the artist and he never wrote me back. Jimmy and the whole shop is amazing. I had a pretty big tattoo that needed to be covered up and I had multiple (5 plus) artists  say they would not do the cover up. Jimmy heard my idea, came up with an awesome design and it is turning about better than I could of every imagined. I made a piercing appointment about a week and a half in advance. I live out of the area so I stopped by on my way to San Francisco to get a piercing. I showed up 10 minutes before my appointment. I was informed that the piercer had not yet arrived for the day. Which honestly threw up the first red flag. If you have an appointment at noon shouldn't you be there at about 11:45 setting up for your appointment. I went next door to get coffee while I waited for him to show up. When I went back in was just a few minutes after noon. The piercer sat at his massage table with his arms crossed and a snide look on his face. He asked are you my appointment? I said I think so noon for a piercing? He looks at me and says you're super late I'm going to have to reschedule. I could do nothing but laugh I walked out I will never suggest anyone go there for a piercing. At least we'll that jerk is in charge of the piercings. Read Less

This is a review for Joe LaMariana, the piercing artist. I haven't had my nose pierced for over 17 years and Joe patiently went through all of the changes in the approach since then. He put me at ease, explained everything he was going to do in great detail, gave terrific advice about aftercare, and in general was just very laid back and easy to be around (he even let my sister hold my hand while he was piercing me!). I am 4 days in and have followed his aftercare advice and am having a really easy time healing. So much more so than the past - likely due to his skill, aftercare instructions and quality of mateirals used + the titanium hardware. Even though I live in San Jose, I will likely come back to Joe for future piercings, and to have the post switched to a smaller one once the healing has gotten a little further along. One BIG bonus, without Joe's sage advice, I would have ended up with hardware too big for my nose. Also, Joe placed the piercing in a position where switching to a hoop would also work in the future. I've been waiting to do this review until my tattoo healed so I could give a complete review. This is not my first tattoo and I've had some bad experiences with ripped skin and excessive bleeding (that's what happens when you let a rookie artist work/practice on you). My artist was Jake I call him an artist because he did something I've never seen before I gave him 4 pictures that had specific things I liked he tied them together in his head and drew what I was thinking in my head on my arm free hand (it was incredible) the pain was minimal hardly any bleeding ( spot here and there) prices are a little more than standard but you get what you pay for. My only criticism is he's in such demand that you may have to schedule a month or 2 in advance but it's worth the wait (as seen in picture). Go in and make an appointment with JAKE or don't listen to me and deal with your forever mistake tattoo. Read Less

I can't say I was surprised by the 5 star rating for this place, because the shop totally deserves it, but people are very particular and opinionated about tattoo shops (as they should be). I decided to do a quick search on other tattoo shops in Petaluma, just to see what other ratings looked like.. did you know this is the highest rated tattoo shop, with the most reviews on Yelp?! (insert clapping emoji here) Jimmy Bruce has done my last two tattoos and they have come out exactly like I wanted them, if not better than I imagined! I wish I would have known he was in the business earlier so he could have done all of mine. He is very careful, clean and safe. He plans well so you are not rushed and works hard to create exactly what you are looking for. Make sure you call the shop to book an appointment and plan to wait, he is in high demand, because he does such an excellent job. Around the holidays or at least once a year he does a raffle for a free tattoo and donates all proceeds to the animal shelter, I truly appreciate his philanthropic, animal loving heart. Joe LaMaraiana removed my (5-6 year old) dermals a little over a year ago. They came out with little to no pain and healed perfectly, with almost no sign they were ever there! I was very worried about scaring or them not healing correctly, but he gave very detailed and clear instruction for how to heal them. I appreciate that he gives you a run down of the whole process before he beings so you know what to expect and have an idea of what's going on while he works. He is also very careful, clean and safe! He can answer any piercing question and gives great advice and suggestions. I have seen his work and it is amazing, also wishing he had done all my piercings. Scheduling an appointment with him is a piece of cake, he has a link in his insta bio and you can see all available dates and times. You also get to select what you need done, so you are given a list of all services and time estimates. This is awesome!   It's important that you have trust in someone who is going to permanently change your body. I have 100% faith in both of these guys and the work that they do. It's an awesome feeling to know you are going to get exactly what you are looking for. If you check out either of their Instagrams, you can see they are nearly perfectionist. Tucked away at the end of American Alley, it's cool and dark, with plenty of art to look at while you wait for your turn. Artist portfolios are right up front for you to browse through, and there's plenty of flash if you are looking for inspiration. It doesn't feel either overly stark or overly cluttered, and it's apparent it's kept very clean.I first went here on a whim to browse tattoo books, and my teen daughter noted they do piercing. We came back another day to have Joe give her a 2nd piercing in each lobe. The man is a perfectionist, extremely careful and gentle. He made sure the placing was *perfect* before proceeding. The piercings healed great, and it was a great experience.I then came back to have my helix pierced. I've had easily half a dozen piercings, and Joe was the best. I'd had a piercing in that spot before and it hadn't gone well, but Joe was confident he could place it so it'd heal well. He recommended a stud over a loop for healing at least. It healed up beautifully and I've kept the stud and added another. When something went a bit funny with it, he worked me in & fixed it right off, and made sure I was scheduled for follow-up with him.After being in the shop a few times I of course had looked a ton at the books there. Greg Rojas stuck out for his beautiful, precise lines. I scheduled a consult for an idea I had. Greg is an extremely nice guy, very friendly and worked with me on my idea until it was something that would be a beautiful tattoo. I scheduled my appointment, left a $40 deposit, & waited a few weeks (don't expect a walk-in tattoo here - these guys are pretty booked!)Greg showed me his final design, and applied the template. I wasn't 100% happy with the placement the first time so he placed it again, and we were both satisfied it was perfect. An hour and a half of mild buzzing later, I had my beautiful tattoo! It's still healing, but it's exactly what I wanted, even when I didn't totally know what I wanted. Today was to the be the day I finally got my belly button pierced. I met with the very friendly and kind piercer Joe, who consulted me that my belly button is not a good candidate for piercing. He was concerned that it would not heal correctly.  I so appreciate his honesty and kindness that I am definitely giving this spot 5 stars! I am a huge fan of Aces Over Eights!! I have so many beautiful tattoos from Jimmy Bruce, who is an amazing artist. But this review is for Joe, their piercer. I got tattooed by Jimmy on Saturday (in love with my sweet pea flower tattoo for my daughter), and decided to go for this inner ear piercing, that I have wanted for awhile. I had to wait to get the piercing because I was pregnant, and then nursing. The thing about this piercing though, is that it is a pressure point, which has been shown to relieve migraines. I get chronic migraines, and get Botox every 12 weeks, along with Occipital Nerve Blocks every other week. I also have Fibromyalgia.I figured I had nothing to lose. I went into the shop, with what had been a 5 day migraine, that even my nerve block did not help with. Joe was so professional, clean, confident, and reassuring that everything would go great, and it did.The piercing just felt like a pinch. It was so simple. The amazing part about this, is that my migraine went instantly away. I am now 5 days out, and still have no migraine. I woke up in a lot of pain due to my Fibromyalgia, and still, no migraine. I have 3 weeks until my next round of Botox, and at this point, I typically have migraines on and off for the next few weeks.I know it has been only 5 days, but these 5 days have been life changing. I have an 8 1/2 month old, and waking up without a migraine, has been an amazing feeling.I recommend Aces Over Eights 100% for tattoos and piercings.Jimmy and Joe (and all the guys, as well as Jamie the counter girl) are the people to go see. I've only been to this place for my piercings but I can't emphasize enough how amazing Joe is!! He's so flexible and helpful with anything I want done. When I go in he will ask me questions on how I want my piercing to look and now after going to him so many times, I just tell him to do what he thinks looks best because I trust him. His pricing is very reasonable as well! Super clean, super quick (in and out in 20 mins at most) and he is just a really amazing dude. I've been to places that have made me wait HOURS for a piercing... He is also super easy to get a hold of and respond super quick. If I ever have something wrong with a piercing, he always tells me what to do and helps me out.Recently I really wanted a certain double hoop on my ear and we tried a few hoops he had and they weren't tight enough on my lobe.. he had to order smaller ones and a few weeks later I went in and they were still too big. Rather than leaving me unhappy, he told me to come back a few days later and he would make the hoops custom for my ear himself. This review is for Joe Mariana, the piercer. I had a not so great experience getting my Monroe done by another piecer and had trouble getting quality, affordable jewelry for it. A few years ago, I got a simple piece from Joe that I loved (this was back when he was located in Sebastopol) and have gone to him ever since. In fact, I hope I never have anyone else pierce me again, since I'd now hold them to such high standards due to Joe's careful, generous, patient, humble, and overall just kind manner. He's done my tragus (and hopefully will do my other ear in the near future!), my nose, and my bellybutton now. His process is quick, efficient, as painless as possible, and Joe keeps you calm since he not only explains the process as he goes along, but also has such a chill vibe that you can't help but feel relaxed, in spite of having a needle poked through your skin. I'm someone who has had numerous problems with piercings beforehand, such as keloids and I am prone to infections/have had bad reactions to most jewelry used - however, I've never had any problems with the titanium pieces Joe uses; plus, he has such aesthetically pleasing jewelry on hand. He's picky (I mean that in the nicest way possible) about placement and will make sure he gets the best placement for whatever area you're getting pierced, specific to your body. Lastly, but not least, he's willing to be honest about healing times and whether or not he believes a piecing will work. For instance, I wanted a double bellybutton piercing (both top and bottom) and he advised me to only get the first one to begin with, since they wouldn't both heal well and had a low percentage of healing properly if I got them done together. I'm glad he let me know, since I do feel like I needed that time for just the one to heal before I get the next one done. I know for a fact many piercers wouldn't extend the same courtesy, so I really appreciated his honesty. So seriously, do yourself a favor and skip that Happy Hour piercing deal you were thinking making good on and go see Joe. (Aces Over Eights is also a really nice shop!) Read Less

Went in to see Joe today - he was recommended - for a daith piercing. First - Aces Over Eights is clean, bright and so comfortable to be in. Bathrooms (ladies) were clean and well stocked. The girl who greeted us was friendly and inviting. And on to Joe - he was extremely calm and educational about the process. He showed us many different options for hardware and explained the benefits of each one. He made me feel so at ease with the whole process. He was quick, clean and very nice about everything. A simple way to explain my experience is, amazing. I had two dermals removed from my forearm and walked away happy. Before starting Joe went into detail regarding what he was going to do. During the removal process he continued to explain in detail each step he was taking and why he was doing it that way. I had a ton of questions during the process and he answered every single one. One of my favorite things about going to Joe was how clean everything was. Last year a friend of mine had a large mural done on his back, and since I finally had the cash to get my half sleeve done, I asked him where his back was done. I walked in and talked with Jimmy Bruce and gave him a printout of the art I wanted to base the half sleeve on. We did four sessions, each time looking better and better with everything falling into place. The detail is incredible! I get compliments every day on it. I HIGHLY recommend Aces over Eights!! I've gotten a couple tattoos here from Jimmy, and both of them have turned out amazing!! After moving here I'd been looking for a good tattoo place, and I actually heard about them because I saw a random girl with a cool tattoo, and asked her where she got it. After that, I looked up reviews, and different places online to see if it was a good place to go. I saw they'd gotten Reader's Choice, Best in Sonoma County in The Press Democrat, and all their other reviews seemed good as well. Also, all the pictures of their work looked great!! So I stopped by the shop to talk to them and find out more.First off, the shop is awesome. Clean, well-lit, cool style and vibe, comfortable, etc. It's right in down-town Petaluma, so parking can be tricky, but it's in a cool area of town. I'm not artistic at all, so I went in with just an idea and some printed off pictures. Jimmy came to the front and took time right then to brainstorm with me and to hear all of my thoughts on what I wanted. I'm pretty picky, and I took in a ton of pictures and rambled on about all these different things and styles I wanted, so I didn't expect anyone to be able to draw up something that I wanted on the first try. But I went back a week or so later, and WOW, what he had drawn up was exactly my style and what I wanted!! I could not think of one thing I wanted to change about it. I was beyond impressed. So I made an appointment and went back in a week or two later to get it done! And then I went back to get another older tattoo touched up. And I will keep going back! Jimmy is GREAT at matching my style, even though it's not really your "typical" tattoo style. I have gotten so many comments and compliments on my tattoos he's done. (I'll post pictures).
