I absolutely love this place, John Macintyre did my tattoo and he was so professional but also so friendly. It was my first tattoo so I was incredibly nervous but he was very accommodating the consultation was great he took all my notes and out his own great spin on the design. I gave him a very vague design idea to start out with and he just turned it into something so beautiful. He also helped me understand more about how the tattoo would work on my body he helped me change my placement to help the tattoo look amazing and I'm so glad he did he definitely knew his stuff. The actual tattoo appointment went great. The tattoo was under my chest and was very painful but he was always checking in on me making sure I was ok. I was talking a lot just to try and take my mind off it and he never showed annoyance or anything he was telling me about his life and it was quite nice actually to get to know my artist. Even though we went over time a bit he charged me his original quote which as a broke student I very much appreciated. I did tip him afterwards, as much as I could tip him and made sure to thank him up and down. I now have an amazing piece of art from an amazing artist. So.... I had an appointment with Krysta a few days ago.It was my first time so I have little to compare my experience to but this is what I can say....I loved it so much that I'm already thinking about my next piece!!Krysta has a private room upstairs. That being said, it was extremely comfortable, no distractions, peaceful & I almost felt as if I was getting special treatment! It was wonderful! My experience with Pete wasn't not good at all. Got a tattoo back in December which scared and has blow out. I had tattoos before which are perfectly fine, so this was my first bad experience. Wanted to get a tattoo and this place was rated the best in Pasadena. I had a great experience here and the job Joe did is outstanding. I had a b&w photo of pin-up queen Betty Page and it came out fantastic! Very comfortable tattoo parlor that features about 5 different artists. You can check out samples of each of their work- you'll probably see the tattoo Joe did for me when you go in there. Not exactly cheap ($150 per hour) but remember you get what you pay for! Ever since Charles covered up my first tat I got whilst very young, dumb, and high in Amsterdam I haven't gone anywhere else for a tattoo.Charles, Pete, Joe, and Daniel before he left have all done superb work on me. Next up is Andrew!Major difference between this spot and others in this area: every one of these guys is an extremely talented artist on paper or canvas drawing or painting freehand. They use outlines for many tattoos though to guide them. It might seem very difficult what they're doing -- and maybe it is to other tattoo "artists" -- but due to their massive talent developed by each of the main four (4) guys having 20+ years experience in tattooing and of course all art this is generally very easy for them.Special note about Charles who is in my opinion the best at Shogun:Follow on Instagram: @tattunaIf you *ever* wanted a tat of a fish or almost any other aquatic life Charles is your man. Charles is the best tattoo artist I've ever had; and I have almost two sleeves, a chest piece and some of my legs done....so I've worked with many tattoo artists. He is very professional: always on time, has everything ready to go and is always pleasant to be around. He's done several pieces on me now and every one has turned out to be amazing. Came here on the recommendation of a friend and coworker for my first tattoo in LA (though my 4th piece overall), and couldn't have been happier. I had mine done by Andrew, who co-runs the shop, and he was very flexible, friendly, and made the whole experience perfect and without a hitch. Helped me get my design to the right size so that it should age well, had me in and out faster than I expected, and all looks great a month later. Since it was a small and simple one, he only ended up charging me the shop minimum, but there's no substitute for good, clean service, so I gave him a very good tip. I have been going to these guys for over 15 years now, and I still go! Joe is my main artist, however Charles has done work on me and Andy did work on my mom. They are all fantastic in what they do. The place is very clean and all tools are sterile. Every tattoo place gets random inspections, they have never had any issues. You can walk in w/out an appointment but you might have to wait a bit. Always make an appointment. Trust me though, if you do have to wait it will be the best wait you have ever done. Read Less

He has been serving as a tattoo artist for more than a decade in Pasadena and very clearly loves and is talented at this type of work! He was polite, very skillful, and even patient with my initial attention to detail about placing the design just as I envisioned it in my mind. Pete Castro is the man! I've been coming here for a few years now, getting tattooed by Pete Castro and he's awesome! Most of my tattoos are Japanese themed and I had a few pieces that were done by another artist at this same spot but he moved out of state and a friend of mine refereed me to Pete who just so happened to be one of the owners of Shogun so I decided to give him a try! Couldn't be happier with the results, he was able to match the design of my other pieces done by another artist to make everything look like it was done by the same person! I usually don't do really bad reviews but these guys deserve it. All of my reviews are honest and accurate. The tat I received was done several years ago. I should have posted sooner nut these guys popped back up.One star is all they get, would be none but Yelp does not have that option. They were highly recommended from a family member who was friends of the owner and he did all her tats. The owner was out and the guy there told me he was more than an expert and experienced enough that he could handle my tat without any problem. I believe his photo example book was all fake or from other artists he took them from. Let me say this I have never asked for a discount or a deal from any of the artists I have received tats from and I never asked them for one as well. I only used them for the owners work I had seen on my family member. If I felt the prices were to high I would seek a price that was more in line with the other quotes. If they stayed to high I looked else where.After showing him many examples of photos I brought in and on the internet he assured me no problem. I decided to let this guy do the work and after paying the 60 bucks and getting the tat I was so furious. I told him it looked nothing like what I provided in photos and the net. He was shocked to hear me say that and looked offended. I showed him the photos and his work and he could not see the difference. To make it worse he offered me $5.00 discount for the tat. What a waste of time an money. To this day I have not found anything that I want to cover it up with. I was considering of making it a giant  minus sign, then putting their name next to it.I knew I was taken by a guy that had little or no experiences in doing tats, on top of that the arrogant guy should have been banned from ever doing tats again.  I know about tats and I carry them from the likes of Burt Grimm and Bob Shaw, and others,  I know quality when I see it. This is the first of two parlors that I got ripped off from. Supposedly pro shops with killer artists. I've had my fill of cookie cutter tat shops. I found a excellent one and have had many awesome tats done by them. Remember when you get a bad tat you are stuck with it until you remove or cover it. I believe bad artists should be held responsible and have to pay to have either fix done because of the shoddy substandard work. Buyer beware. Read Less

So, I was thinking since I was already there, I should just get something.I ended up having a coverup tattoo. And I'm so happy with it. I am so happy.  From the moment I arrived until I left I was treated with respect.  Learned Pinterest is not the place to find a picture.  They gave me some books to look at, and then I found "the one".
